to think that a salad box is a perfectly normal thing for a 3yo to eat?

I took DD to subway today as we were out Xmas shopping and needed to stop for a bite to eat.

She asked for a salad box with lettuce, cucumber, peppers, gerkins, tomato and grated cheese..

So we sat down to eat and the woman sat opposite passed comment on what DD was eating... something along the lines of how strange to see such a young child eating a salad.

I though it was a very strange comment but just smiled and carried on eating dinner with DD.

AIBU to think a salad is a normal thing for a 3yo to eat?

Stealth boast alert!

myfirstkitchen · 29/11/2012 18:57

people who comment on strangers food are weird.

missymoomoomee · 29/11/2012 19:00

A 3yo said 'please Mummy can i have a salad box with lettuce, cucumber, peppers, gerkins, tomato and grated cheese' Confused

I think I shall have to agree with LittleEdie and think you are just stealth boasting.

realcoalfire · 29/11/2012 19:06

You refer to it as 'dinner' It's not a great meal for a 3 yo IMO.They have small tummies and a high calorific requirement

valiumredhead · 29/11/2012 19:07

What little eddie said Wink

lljkk · 29/11/2012 19:12

I rate it as highly unusual, OP. Surprised you didn't realise.
I eat salad, tonnes of it given a chance. 3 DC will sometimes binge on it, DC4 would starve first.

nokidshere · 29/11/2012 19:13

I am sure she was just pleasantly surprised - its not unusual for children to enjoy elements of salad but not the whole caboodle.

CheckpointCharlie · 29/11/2012 19:16

Mine eats gherkins, pickles, tomatoes, all the things you mentioned. Even beet root, bean sprouts, lettuce, all things! She also eats masses of biscuits and a few sweets. She would happily tuck into that and sometimes we get those salad boxes from tesco as a treat!

fuzzypicklehead · 29/11/2012 19:20

My eldest (4) won't eat pizza, but she always wants to go to pizza hut for the salad bar. She does not get this from my side of the family.

ClippedPhoenix · 29/11/2012 19:20

My DS will eat cucumber and that's about it, he tells me he's not a rabbit Grin

MadameCreeper · 29/11/2012 19:21

I hope it's not stealth boasting or competitive eating. Its only A choice of iceburg, lettuce, tomato, red onion, sweetcorn, pepper, few pickels, few sauces and cheese. Yes, I can list them all Grin All very mundane and nothing for strangers to get excited about. We're not talking about a warm mackerel salad served on a bed of beetroot and rocket and an entire scotch bonnet on the side.

Disclaimers:

  1. I'm sure she was being friendly, nice and making conversation. I've had little old ladies remark mine eating fruit. Another day and they'd been seen eating chocolate or nuggets.
  2. If your childen do not take to vegetables (cooked or cold) or fruit, it does not necessarily mean that your parenting skills are deficient. Some have it easier than others.
PorkyScratching · 29/11/2012 19:23

I offered my Ds all sorts of beige things from the freezer for tea .... he response? "No thanks Mum, Ill just have a salad & a wee bit of ham". He is 4!

Athrawes · 29/11/2012 19:27

Mine upsets the supermarket staff and quite a few customers regularly by chomping his way through a capsicum whilst we shop. They'd rather he was eating a bag of chips. And no, it's not because I haven't paid yet - it's the "OMG that's so weird". I have even gotten to the checkout before and overheard them talking about a strange child they saw the other day eating a capsicum...and had to point out that he was mine, on an outing with his childminder.

pigletmania · 29/11/2012 19:35

Yabu ts not normal for 3 year olds to eat only salad. Usually on the side if something a bit more substantial

AmazingBouncingFerretDude · 29/11/2012 19:42

It's not much is it?

DS used to and still does prefer the salad on the sandwich.

DD avoids anything that doesnt come in the form of a crisp packet. She is a fucking NIGHTMARE eater

MrsMushroom · 29/11/2012 19:44

my DD would live on bread and cucumbers....but agree with Piglet...its not much for lunch and maybe the commenter was thinking that.

trio38 · 29/11/2012 19:44

Maybe it's unusual in Subway....

forevergreek · 29/11/2012 19:58

Ita just salad. They would happily eat that but probably still be hungry. If I was at home it would be salad with chicken/ fish/ couscous etc..

Glittertwins · 29/11/2012 19:59

Our two actively ask for cheese salad at home and clear up any side salads when we go out. I eat a lot of salad so it's normal for them to want what I have.

MrsMelons · 29/11/2012 20:08

Both my DSs would eat a salad box but not just that on its own for lunch. I am surprised people are that surprised with 3 yr olds eating salad TBH.

TiggyD · 29/11/2012 20:19

Any carbohydrate? What's good and healthy for an adult isn't always good and healthy for a child.

Glittertwins · 29/11/2012 20:28

Pitta or breadsticks here Tiggy

MadameCreeper · 29/11/2012 20:33

I'm sure a young child will survive one meal without carbs and it doesn't really matter if they want something else by the time they get home.

chocoluvva · 29/11/2012 20:37

Not unusual at all - my DCs ate lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, beetroot, lemon wedges, spring onions, grated carrots, raw peppers, olives......at that age and still do now they're teens.
As for your DD's calorific intake - lunch is only one meal - she has plenty of time to fill up on carbs at dinner time, before bedtime....

tethersend · 29/11/2012 20:45

My DD wouldn't have eaten that.

She would still be full from the Mousseline of pattes rouges crayfish with morel mushroom infusion she had for lunch.
