to think that a salad box is a perfectly normal thing for a 3yo to eat?

I took DD to subway today as we were out Xmas shopping and needed to stop for a bite to eat.

She asked for a salad box with lettuce, cucumber, peppers, gerkins, tomato and grated cheese..

So we sat down to eat and the woman sat opposite passed comment on what DD was eating... something along the lines of how strange to see such a young child eating a salad.

I though it was a very strange comment but just smiled and carried on eating dinner with DD.

AIBU to think a salad is a normal thing for a 3yo to eat?

I know lots of children who will eat the sweetcorn, tomato, cucumber and lettuce Confused Peppers and mayo would be a bit hit and miss. My 7 year old loves a sub with only salad! We're not obsessively healthy and will also eat at Burger King, or Pizza Express.

Fakebook · 29/11/2012 17:09

Dd would eat that. She normally finishes the salad bowl with every meal. She also lives on apples and pomegranates. The woman must thing all young children prefer Junk over healthy.

msbear · 29/11/2012 17:09

Sounds lovely and perfectly normal. An elderly woman once asked me if it was really safe to eat raw mushrooms as DS toddler munched his way through a big fat white one. Bless.

StateofConfusion · 29/11/2012 17:09

My ds would love that, with a bit of bread on the side, he would have ate that at 3yo aswell.

zipzap · 29/11/2012 17:09

Perfectly normal for a child to eat salad. And whilst there might be the odd one or two things that an individual child might not like what is more worrying if people think it is normal for them not to want to eat salad at all - very strange!

(ds1 not keen on lettuce but adores olives, ds2 not so keen on tomatoes but adores cucumber and peppers so much that I have to encourage him to eat his meat/cake/pudding first - he's very little for his age so needs plenty of protein, fats and energy stuff in his diet - and then let him have the cucumber and pepper afterwards; if I didn't he would happily fill up on them and then not eat anything else. There have been times when I've been putting a meal out and will have chopped the pepper/cucumber/lettuce etc and put it on the table early, while I'm sorting other stuff. DS2 has come in and polished off the lot while I'm not looking, so not only do I then have to do more but also have problems persuading him to eat anything else).

ParceQueJeLeVauxBien · 29/11/2012 17:09

How sad that people think that it's unusual for children to like eating salad.

Greensleeves · 29/11/2012 17:12

both of mine would eaten it at that age

they both still would, although ds2 would choose something trashier if allowed

snigger · 29/11/2012 17:14

Pancakeflipper, you are a strikethrough goddess.

SecretSquirrels · 29/11/2012 17:17

I don't believe it. I have never seen a child eat salad.

Fakebook · 29/11/2012 17:20

SecretSquirrels, you're funny Grin

KenLeeeeeee · 29/11/2012 17:21

I've never met a child who will happily eat a complete salad. My kids like some veg but all different: ds1 loves celery, tomato and peppers; ds2 loves carrots and cucumber; dd eats broccoli and raw carrots constantly. None of them will touch lettuce or mushrooms though.

Pancakeflipper · 29/11/2012 17:27

Snigger - I thank you.

it's cos it is the only code thingy I can remember when I am on my iTouch so I totally over use it at any given opportunity

DumSpiroSpero · 29/11/2012 17:27

My DD would have definitely eaten that at 3 - when I took her food shopping with me as a small toddler she'd often start munching on peppers, spring onions or raw broccoli if my back was turned for long enough to get hold of it!

She's 8 now a frequently a complete pita about meals but she still loves salad - would even choose it over fruit, which is probably quite unusual.

MummyPig24 · 29/11/2012 17:28

A while ago I was out with dd and she was eating a banana. A woman commented that it was nice to see a child eating fruit rather than sweets.

Startail · 29/11/2012 17:31

DD2 loves subway because you can avoid all salad!

ratspeaker · 29/11/2012 17:36

DD2 loved salad at that age.
She used to be the odd child in the supermarket begging me to buy her some celery.

Mrsjay · 29/11/2012 17:36

if you 3yr old likes it then why not maybe the other mum was astounded that you managed to get a 3yr old to eat anything green and healthy but if they like it then they like it,

Hobbitation · 29/11/2012 17:38

Mine will eat salad if it's crunchy and doesn't contain any funny bitter lettuce leaves. I don't think they would choose it at this time of year though.

MuckingFunter · 29/11/2012 18:28

Competative eating at it's finest Wink

COCKadoodledooo · 29/11/2012 18:36

It wasn't unusual for ds1 at that age, but I'd be bloody surprised to see ds2 eating a box of salad!

mrskeithrichards · 29/11/2012 18:44

Oh me me me! Can I join in?

Well, my ds will eat a tree leaf with mung bean and chickpeas on the side. Or raw organic potatoes dipped in carrot smoothie.

Seriously, it's not unusual, no one cares!

BeaWheesht · 29/11/2012 18:46

Ds would eat salad non stop (though not gherkins)

Dd wouldn't but she'd eat anything and everything else

trixymalixy · 29/11/2012 18:49

DD age 3 will Hoover down any vegetable or fruit, but will not eat salad leaves.

DS however has to be bribed to eat any type of fruit or veg...

quoteunquote · 29/11/2012 18:50

All mine have always eaten salad and enjoyed it,which is a good job as they get it every day, we get a lot of comments when out for meals and other people feel the need to express surprise that they are choosing to eat vegetables.

TrustMeImANinja · 29/11/2012 18:51

What MrsKeith said.
She must have been starving. A poxy salad?
