I think it's fair enough to have certain preferences when it comes to what kind of look you like, but to say that you only like long hair on women, irrespective of whether it suits them or not, is a bit IMO.

(Prompted by a friend who said today: 'sometimes I think women cut their hair too short, and it's like they're cutting off some of their beauty'...)

Chances are he has a preference, and expressed it in a slightly exaggerated way. Maybe he's never fancied a woman with short hair; doesn't mean it couldn't happen if he met the right one.

I have a strong preference for men with long ginger hair. In idle chat, I wouldn't necessarily qualify it by saying that I have been attracted to men without that feature.

How can you be suspicious of anyone's preference?

I prefer women with long hair too and tend not to like razor cut short hair for example.

Did the friend actually say the words "I like long hair on a woman irrespective of whether it suits them or not"?

FWIW I don't like short hair on 99% of women.

My ex used to like my hair as long as possible. Guess what I did when we split? Yep, pixie cut. Didn't put DH off, though I have long hair again now.

I'm not only thinking of my friend though - my (hugely sexist) FIL thinks this, and a couple of other men I've known in the past have thought women should have long hair, and they were both the kind of men who had fairly strong ideas about women's roles.

I'd only be suspicious if the way they expressed that preference was suspicious.

It's fine to have a preference, quite another to 'require' it of a DW of GF iyswim.

Worra no he didn't say that and I think in his case he was just expressing a preference.

Some women look amazing with short hair and it just makes me a bit if someone can't see this and only sees "short hair = unfeminine".

I strongly prefer men with short hair. Would this mean you were suspicious of me too? I don't really like women's hair short either, although I know a few that it really suits. I wish I could have short hair and like it, as I can't be arsed with all the brushing etc.

But who are you to say that because you think some women look amazing with short hair, other people should agree?

Perhaps they 'can't see it' because they don't think it.

If you'd started a thread saying "AIBU to be suspicious of misogynistic men who believe all women should have long hair", I'd say YANBU.

But that's not what your OP is about.

Maybe suspicious is too strong a word Owl - it just always makes me wonder why they just like the hair in itself, rather than the overall look of the person as an individual. As it's always come from men who I consider to be a bit inflexible in their thinking, I've started to associate the two things and wonder if there's a link.

What do you suspect about these men then?

Worra I didn't mean to make it sound like my OP was only about what my friend said. I started to describe the other times when men I know have said it but thought it would be too long. By 'prompted' I just meant that what my friend said reminded me of it so that I started the thread.

I always remember there used to an american programme called "Cheaters." Where people hired private detectives to catch out people who were cheating on their spouse and one of the detectives said that he had noticed through his work that the women the men cheated with always had longer hair than the wives! I was really surprised, but it was what he had observed.

Lots of people can look good with all sorts of features - doesn't mean it's not perfectly reasonable for someone to have a exclusive preference for a particular feature.

is "I only like women with long hair" really different to "I only like women" ? It's just a sexual preference - one is no more wrong than the other, sexual preferences, however they are formed aren't exactly something you can change or are concious.

@toffee you codl also come to the conclusion that men who like women with logn hair are more likely to cheat.
