AIBU to expect people to come to my "tupperware" party to spend at least 3 pounds when they come?

I held a "tupperware" type party. The hostess came down with the items and did some demo,etc....I had invited a few mums/friends, including very close friends...to be honest it was meant to be fun and I did not want the mums/friends to feel obliged to buy anything and stated that on my email. However, I never would have thought that out of the 10 people who came, 3 ordered something, which left the hostess really crossed as the guests who hadn't ordered said they would def do that by the deadline...but they never did...even when the hostess phoned them to find out after the deadline...I am feeling really sad and disappointed as I would never have gone to a party like this without buying anything, even if it meant 3 pounds....I feel that these women just came for a free lunch really( I cooked lots of things!)....To be honest, I wanted to enjoy this party and the money did not matter so much but I could have easily got lots of items with all the money that I spent cooking all the food...AIBU?? NB: /my "best friend" even tried to get my discount (as i get points and discount acoording to the sales), so that she wouldnt have to spend so much...in the end, she bought nothing, saying the items were too expensive....

I remember my mum hosting a tupperware party. I was about 5 or 6 so 1982 sounds right.

Jins · 21/11/2012 18:01

Ah! Guilt Trip Parties are my least favourite events and I always find I have a subsequent engagement

I especially like the ones where the host gives me a catalogue and an order form because I missed it.

mrskeithrichards · 21/11/2012 18:01

I'm going to have a poundshop party!

MsHighwater · 21/11/2012 18:02

Just out of interest, what could they have bought for £3?

Jins · 21/11/2012 18:02

I was just thinking that!

Better still have a 99p shop party and here's the thing...

Charge them a pound :)

mrskeithrichards · 21/11/2012 18:03

At least you can pissed and have a laugh at Ann summers. The rest sound dire. Camel's, plastic boxes, spoons, books for kids. Pippa Dee?

YourHandInMyHand · 21/11/2012 18:03

Hmm People are short of cash, they aren't going to spend £££ on tupperware when they can buy it in poundshop/home bargains/wilkinsons.

Tupperware party - how retro! And not in an ironic, cool way.

BridgetBidet · 21/11/2012 18:03

YABVVVVU, basically you are saying that you wanted to exploit your friends by making them feel obliged to spend their money so get you a discount to spend on tat.

Well this has bitten you right back become they've come for the free food and not bought anything and have given you a little taste of your own medicine by exploiting you right back.

This is nothing more than you deserve, you expected to exploit your friends sense of obligation so they bought something and you got a discount. They've exploited you right back and it's nothing more than karma.

I'm afraid I have no sympathy for people this happens to.

MammaTJ · 21/11/2012 18:03

YABU!! They are your friends, not your customers, although even customers are allowed to go in to a shop and leave again without buying anything.

Iused to go to these things out of politeness to make up the numbers. I certainly never intended to buy anything. YABVU.

mrskeithrichards · 21/11/2012 18:05

Jins that was my scam plan!

I shall retire on the profits in 3 years, you mark my words

Jins · 21/11/2012 18:06

Virgin Vie and candles were the last ones I remember

Apart from Fecking Pampered Chef which is the same thing only much more expesnive

bedmonster · 21/11/2012 18:06

Oh bloody hell, these 'parties' are most peoples idea of hell. Honestly. And the people that go are almost always guilted into going and then spend 2 hours working out the cheapest thing they can buy without making them look tight. Because they know they are expected to. And then you get the hostess 'benefit'. It's like bloody begging. I don't go anymore, its a waste of everyones time.
And the fact that your guests got phone calls seems like they were being harassed. Nice.

nipersvest · 21/11/2012 18:06

not heard of tupperware parties recently, but i've been to loads of pampered chef/jamie oliver type parties, afraid i just can't afford to buy anything anymore, it's overpriced anyway.

mrskeithrichards · 21/11/2012 18:06

Candles.

Not camels. Now that would be interesting!

Jins · 21/11/2012 18:07

mrskeithrichards you'd better get a franchise going

Get six people to sell the idea to six people or something

TheOneWithTheHair · 21/11/2012 18:08

I quite like the Pampered Chef stuff. Blush It is expensive though!

Jins · 21/11/2012 18:09

I still have a pack of four vanilla scented votive candles which were the cheapest thing I could buy at one party in about 1996.

Must chuck them out

givemeaclue · 21/11/2012 18:09

You told them no obligation?

They took you at your word.

What is your problem

Yabu, as well as rude and grabbing.

givemeaclue · 21/11/2012 18:10

On the positive side, I expect they enjoyed the lunch

Fecklessdizzy · 21/11/2012 18:11

God, I do so hate these things! ( See long whingy previous thread for details ... )

If you tell people they don't have to buy anything and they take you at your word what on earth have you got to complain about? Next time say they should cough up or get lost and then at least you'll all know where you stand!

I have a friend who got snarky if I didn't go to her parties and snarky if I went and didn't buy anything. So, she wants me to waste my time and money so that she can get more stuff. Nice. We have spoken about it and now I am NOT expected to attend.
