AIBU to expect people to come to my "tupperware" party to spend at least 3 pounds when they come?

I held a "tupperware" type party. The hostess came down with the items and did some demo,etc....I had invited a few mums/friends, including very close friends...to be honest it was meant to be fun and I did not want the mums/friends to feel obliged to buy anything and stated that on my email. However, I never would have thought that out of the 10 people who came, 3 ordered something, which left the hostess really crossed as the guests who hadn't ordered said they would def do that by the deadline...but they never did...even when the hostess phoned them to find out after the deadline...I am feeling really sad and disappointed as I would never have gone to a party like this without buying anything, even if it meant 3 pounds....I feel that these women just came for a free lunch really( I cooked lots of things!)....To be honest, I wanted to enjoy this party and the money did not matter so much but I could have easily got lots of items with all the money that I spent cooking all the food...AIBU?? NB: /my "best friend" even tried to get my discount (as i get points and discount acoording to the sales), so that she wouldnt have to spend so much...in the end, she bought nothing, saying the items were too expensive....

You wha?

LegArmpits · 21/11/2012 17:54

All the LOLs.

Themumsnot · 21/11/2012 17:55

YABVVVVVVVVVU and then some. I hate those damn product parties. You want a nice lunch with your friends, then invite them round to lunch. You want to trap them in a room while some desperate housewife flogs them overpriced tat because you have your eye on a free salad-spinner that you want them to subsidise then you do that by all means but don't tell them they are under no obligation to buy the tat and then moan when they don't.

QuietNinjaTardis · 21/11/2012 17:55

Yabu no one has to buy anything at these sorts of party's.

Pascha · 21/11/2012 17:55

I would never have gone to the party in the first place.

ENormaSnob · 21/11/2012 17:56

Maybe it was a shit party?

How about next time just arranging a get together without trying to flog overpriced shite that no one wants just so you can get a free butty box or whatever.

squeakytoy · 21/11/2012 17:56

Well you will know not to do one again...

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 21/11/2012 17:56

Wow.
YABU.
Your best friend tells you it's too expensive, what more do you need?

And have I got this right? Your guests were phoned after the event as well?

Fucking hell. Nightmare.

You told them they didn't't have to buy anything!

Namechangeforapropertythread · 21/11/2012 17:57

This is so why I say no to these things even if the invitee says I don't need to buy anything!

missymoomoomee · 21/11/2012 17:57

YABU, you say its not about the money, all the while going on about the money. Most of the things at these parties you could get for a third of the price elsewhere, you should have just organised a piss up instead.

NoraGainesborough · 21/11/2012 17:57

So you weren't bothered about them spending money, but actually you are.

I don't get it.

StuntGirl · 21/11/2012 17:58

Have I gone back to the 70s? Confused

Pascha · 21/11/2012 17:58

Next time charge £3 entry, do a tombola and sod the tupperware.

TheOneWithTheHair · 21/11/2012 17:58

I avoid these parties like the plague since I was guilted into having one. It cost me a fortune and my friends to sit listening to a load of rubbish. I was so embarrassed. I just have parties now.

Sallyingforth · 21/11/2012 17:58

Didn't you realise these 'parties' are a rip-off?

BupcakesAndCunting · 21/11/2012 17:58

Why would anyone spend upwards of £10 on something they can get for £1.99 in Wilkos?

I recently went to a friend's Neals Yard party- I love my friend to bits and quite like the products. However, rather embarassingly when I got there and saw the prices I realised I couldn't afford anything! I tried on a perfume intending to perhaps buy later and got an allergic reaction...
So yes you are BVVVVVVU. People really don't have much money at the moment.

wewereherefirst · 21/11/2012 17:59

There's still tupperware parties?! That's SO 1982.

Next time do Ann Summers, there's more LULZ.

SantaisBarredfromhavingStella · 21/11/2012 17:59

Lol at Tupperware party, my mum used to have these-didn't realise they were still on the go!!

NoraGainesborough · 21/11/2012 17:59

Oh and these things are expensive. You would rather your friends, who you told didn't have to buy anything, got ripped off because you CHOSE to put on a fancy lunch and invite them.

Come on OP, what did you get if they spent £3 per head?

Also if i was planning on ordering afterwards and the women kept calling me to make sure I had, I would change my mind. I won't be ripped off and harassed.

5hounds · 21/11/2012 18:00

Lol

BonVoyageCharlieBrown · 21/11/2012 18:00

YABU. I refuse to go to these parties as I hate them. I have no money and feel embarrassed that i can't buy anything even when the host has said I don't have to (clearly they do mind really)

I wouldn't ever put one of these parties because it just feels like its people trying to make money out their friends. Its just not right to me.
