about the word "frape"??

BunnyLeBOOwski · 19/11/2012 18:58

Logged onto FB this morning and was subjected to no less than 3 posts including this odious word.

In a fit of pique I posted a status along the lines of "For the love of God people, please stop using the word "frape". It makes you look insensitive and uneducated".

I know, I know, FB is the work of the devil and I shouldn't care but these are otherwise vaguely intelligent people and it is a hateful word is it not??

Or is it a harmless word and I'm overreacting?

Disclaimer: I'm at best pre-menstrual, at worst preggo so I may just be a tad snippier than usual Blush.

How about you don't bother reading the threads then Ghostship?

It's pretty clear from my title what it's about.

Did you not get something nice for your tea, Ghostship ? poor you Sad

GhostShip · 19/11/2012 20:27

Oh isn't your sarcasm hilarious Hmm

Yama · 19/11/2012 20:28

HoratioWinwood - excellent posts.

You summed it up for me here:
'We have enough problems of a social misunderstanding of what rape is, without further muddying the waters by using the word casually and figuratively. We can say that Girls Aloud "murdered" a tune because they are criminally talentless and everyone knows what murder is.'

I shall now tackle my sister about her occasional use of this term.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 19/11/2012 20:29

So we're all agreed that the vast majority of the time it refers to penetration without consent.

Shriekkkkk - of course it does, but doesn't murdered?

Or is that one okay because people are used to hearing it and it isn't a crime that has more female victims...

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/11/2012 20:35

I don't like it. It makes me cringe.

Portofino · 19/11/2012 20:38

I would not use murder either personally but it IS age old. Frape is a word invented recently in a society that should know better.

GhostShip · 19/11/2012 20:39

I don't use murder or frape, but I don't think anyone else is in the wrong for using them.

EchoBitch · 19/11/2012 20:42

Horrid word, used by the ignoramuses of the world.

MrsGeologist · 19/11/2012 20:44

Lucky for me, my FB friends are sensible folk and don't use the term, I think it's vile.

Portofino · 19/11/2012 20:51

Ghostship - but if they are nice innocent phrases why would you not use them yourself?

BunnyLeBOOwski · 19/11/2012 20:52

Just to clarify, I don't have idiots on my FB friends list.

Only friends and family I actually know. Double figures.

And I don't tolerate racism, misogyny. Have deleted people in the past for such stuff (after calling them out for it first) and wouldn't hesitate to do so again.

That's the most confusing bit. These aren't frst boy type teenagers. They're mature, educated, "normal" people Confused.

I had to have a word with my DAD once. It was very embarrassing but I was most clear that he, with daughters and granddaughters and nieces etc, should not post sexist shite.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2012 20:58

I have used both words, though neither are particular fixtures in my vocabulary other than in their legal definitions (obviously not frape,it has no legal definition). But I have used them in the causal context if "so and so murdered that song/ so and so has clearly been fraped".

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2012 21:00

Posted too soon.

I don't think this makes me an ignoramus.

Not reading most contracts before signing them/ agreeing to terms and conditions despite reading law may well do though. :/

forgetmenots · 19/11/2012 21:02

Spot on Horatia

GhostShip · 19/11/2012 21:04

Portofino - I don't use frape because it reminds me of the cringey slang words like 'chillax'. I don't use murdered because it just isn't in my vocabulary to use it any other way than what it reall means :)

BunnyLeBOOwski · 19/11/2012 21:07

I agree with you on that score GhostShip.

The word is an affront to the art of the portmanteau.

Evening all
Not a picture of Rob Lowe for a change

AnyFucker · 19/11/2012 21:15

Rob Lowe is an unfortunate celebrity to name on this thread Grin
