about the word "frape"??

BunnyLeBOOwski · 19/11/2012 18:58

Logged onto FB this morning and was subjected to no less than 3 posts including this odious word.

In a fit of pique I posted a status along the lines of "For the love of God people, please stop using the word "frape". It makes you look insensitive and uneducated".

I know, I know, FB is the work of the devil and I shouldn't care but these are otherwise vaguely intelligent people and it is a hateful word is it not??

Or is it a harmless word and I'm overreacting?

Disclaimer: I'm at best pre-menstrual, at worst preggo so I may just be a tad snippier than usual Blush.

i'm very happy for you Horatia. I have a law degree. Are you happy for me too?

Yes I do,because rape can be used to mean violation/improper treatment. Though they can be funny, they are a violation of that persons account/privacy/right not to be made to look ridiculous.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2012 19:50

X post.

I wouldn't have been quite so sarcastic had I seen your "minor expert" statement was tongue in cheek.

MrsHoarder · 19/11/2012 19:50

I don't like it. I have a history and feel uncomfy when people are making rape jokes. Of course because of this I never feel I can stand up and tell them to stop it.

flyingspaghettimonster · 19/11/2012 19:51

Yes, I defend its use. Language changes constantly. Words that once held great power or were considered taboo slowly become common slang, then pass into such a general usage that nobody blinks at it. "Frape" is not the same as "rape". But actually - any act that you consider a violation of yourself/your rights etc is a rape. I use rape as a term when I feel a company has completely overcharged for something because they know they can get away with it. I use frape if somebody hacks another person's facebook. Do I believe it lessons the gravity of actual rape? No! I have experienced non consensual sex, I still don't see the use of the word rape as being derogatory of my experience.

I think people are far too over sensitive about this and do we really need a thread on it every week? That alone makes me want to use rape more. Rape rape rape.

Find a real issue to be bothered by.

DalekInAFestiveJumper · 19/11/2012 19:52

Huh, so that's what that means. I saw it earlier today and thought my friend just misspelled 'frappe'. Blush

HoratiaWinwood · 19/11/2012 19:52

I know it can mean that. But perhaps 99% of the time it is used it means "forced sex act". If you asked 100 people on the street what it means, they'd describe a forced sex act.

I hope you crossposted with my comment where I said I was kidding.

Merrycuckingfistmas · 19/11/2012 19:52

I hate it, I think it's a disgusting word!

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2012 19:54

I am surprised,I have to say,to see that grown adults "frape" each others Facebooks. I thought it was a more of a young people thing, teens and drunk students.

So regardless of whether one agrees on the use of the word,we can all agree that these people are very immature?

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2012 19:55

Horatia I did. Apologies.

I'm typing on my phone so once I start typing the page doesn't update and all I can see is the text box.

Impatientwino · 19/11/2012 19:56

YANBU

It's ridiculous to use a word like that so frivolously.

Yes it might be a technically correct definition of the action but it is generally associated with a horrific violent unimaginable crime and i can't understand why such a phrase has caught on.

When I worked in a company that had young boys (16-20ish) working in our warehouse I overheard them talking saying that someone had emptied the battery bin of a particular type of battery and the actual phrase one used was 'oh someone's been raping the battery bin again'

It was all I could do not to punch him in the face Angry

I honestly do not know that is wrong with people.

HoratiaWinwood · 19/11/2012 19:57

Cross again! Drat these fast threads Wink

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus · 19/11/2012 20:00

But why?! These people are using the word properly. Wtf is wrong with that?

I think everyone who disagrees with the word "rape" used in any context except when being used to describe forced sex should be complaining to publishers of dictionaries.

HoratiaWinwood · 19/11/2012 20:00

It isn't the use of the word per se that riles me, I think, but rather a culture within which the word is used so casually and the act/crime is so misunderstood and unpunished.

HandMini · 19/11/2012 20:02

It's really distasteful and I hate it.

YANBU.

Yet another way in which Facebook is shite....move away from the Facebook.

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus · 19/11/2012 20:03

But it's not the fault of people using the word "frape" that it goes so unpunished.

I know a few people who have actually been raped in the sexual assault context and do not find the use of the word disrespectful, I also know at least 1 who actually uses it and she was the victim of a vicious attack.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 19/11/2012 20:05

If you hear "x has been raped", do you ask further questions to find out which of the 3 meanings was intended?

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2012 20:05

Twitter is much better than Facebook. Not least because more people appear to be literate. Or rather, the one I choose to follow are.

I went to school/university with the people on my Facebook. My mind boggles that they all shared at least 12 years of free education with me and cannot spell at all.

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus · 19/11/2012 20:08

No as it would usually be pretty obvious what meaning was intended, just as it is when it is used on FB.

Portofino · 19/11/2012 20:10

It is horrible. But I hasten to add, it is not FB that is evil - it the people that use FB. If you don't like what they post, pull them up on it, or delete them. I am abroad and use FB a lot as it is a handy way of keeping in touch. Strangely, I am rarely troubled by disturbing or worrying posts, as my friends and family are not a bunch of misogynist, racist wankers.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2012 20:11

No Shriiieeek...because it is obvious what is meant.

The phrase raped and pillaged. As in x coastal town was raped and pillaged by the Vikings. That's not referring to the sexual violation of the women who lived in x coastal town (though did happen often historically),it refers to seizing property by force.

GhostShip · 19/11/2012 20:13

God I'm sick to death of this topic, it's done at least once a week. Usually under the guise of 'am i being unreasonable to block this person'

It is not just a sexual term.

Portofino · 19/11/2012 20:15

I am sure most people who use the word use it innocently. That is not the point though...

Portofino · 19/11/2012 20:16

Ghosthip, but in mhe, you tend to play down the dv/abuse/rape card on many threads, so maybe you need to educate yourself a little.

Portofino · 19/11/2012 20:17

And I have been there, done that, changed my opinion.

AnyFucker · 19/11/2012 20:20

You could try not clicking on the thread then, Ghostship.

The title of this one was enough of a signpost for you, I presume.
