Who has said otherwise BristolBanshee ? I think everyone here has acknowledged that there are racist Muslims as well.

thebody · 17/11/2012 13:18

Bristol yes, wane read springs post on the nasty racist cockneys please.

PlantsDieArid · 17/11/2012 13:20

No, she can't. Well noticed.

She made cultural observations. That doesn't make her a racist. A racist makes sweeping judgements, good and bad, based on the colour of skin. Which strikes me as dangerous at worst and amusingly naive at best.

Somewhat bemused as to what she should be apologising for?

Re BNP EDL etc. Personally, I believe that unless and until we acknowledge that ignorant racism and hatred is not just the preserve of members of those parties, we wil remain light years away from the sort of honest, civilised non-hysterical, open-minded and informed debate that is sorely lacking in the UK, with these pages, very sadly, proving the point.

FromEsme · 17/11/2012 13:23

Oh what utter bollocks PlantsDieArid . It is a fucking joke, prejudiced people always make that comment. "Some of my best friends are black/Muslim/gay" before going on to say something vile.

I am very happy to debate this issue. It is probably the most important one in the UK today. While women like her go around utterly terrified of anyone who isn't white, however, I really doubt that it's one that will be resolved.

AmberLeaf · 17/11/2012 13:24

So no group of men, Asian, White, Nigerian, Somalian, FRnech or whatever can't make a woman feel uncomfortable? And if they do she's racist?

If she feels uncomfortable because of their race then yes she is racist.

What about a group of hoodies at 10pm? Is that unfair to all youths if you're frightened?

Yes. 'hoodies' FFS, so a young person wearing a hooded sweater is scary? get a grip.

PlantsDieArid · 17/11/2012 13:24

*The wholesale labelling of groups on this thread is quite frankly shocking.

WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS....*

Nope, I take that back, there is hope after all.

PlantsDieArid · 17/11/2012 13:32

Fromesme prejudiced people always say that then go on to say something vile.

I have many black, gay and Muslim friends. Im sure we have all at times said things to each other which were insulting or crass, its what sometimes hapoens in dialogue. We need more of it and less patronising pussyfooting.

In fact, before you pre-judge what I say as 'bollocks' it may be that I am myself all three.

That's kind of proved the point I wanted to make, so thank you.

FromEsme · 17/11/2012 13:42

What race/religion/sexuality has fuck all to do with it. Where have I assumed anything about you?

Saying insulting/crass things to people you're friends and where you all understand it as a joke can be fine. My group of friends do it too. It can cross a line at times.

Clarissa Dickson Wright didn't joke with her friends though. She published it in a book. If you can't see the difference, what more can I say about it?

thebody · 17/11/2012 13:55

So Clarissa Is, 'disgusting, racist, vile, musty smelling and an old duck'

Quite frankly the sort if posters who can post this about an elderly woman perhaps need to look at themselves a bit more.

Clarissa is definatly not stupid. She wrote this article as she saw the snapshot of Bradford on that day. That's how she felt.

Now I have lived in Handsworth as I have said. I witnessed vile behaviour from individuals of all and every creed and skin colour. I witnessed lovely kindness from all and every skin colour.

Up thread spring mentioned about the wholesale racism of the cockneys and it all being racist 'one way',, that's clearly cant be true.

We must see people as individuals and not judge whole groups or we get saville ( he's famous and untouchable) and we get rochdale( Muslim men so it becomes a sensitive race issue)

If we don't listen or ignore or laugh at people like Clarissa or the head of Hamas, or the Muslim council of England or the BNP then we don't challenge or repair or understand.

PlantsDieArid · 17/11/2012 13:57

I was answering the point about black/Muslim/gay that you brought up in your post.

I think the point she was making was about mono as opposed to multicultural; I think it's a fair point and she made it empirically; that was her experience, and I don't think her pointing out that she felt uncomfortable being ignored by an alien culture was racist, any more than my black friend felt recently when he was ignored in an all-white chip shop in St Andrews.

Thanks for an interesting exchange though.

tethersend · 17/11/2012 14:12

"WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS"

I'm not.

tethersend · 17/11/2012 14:14

Is 65 really elderly?

thebody · 17/11/2012 14:16

Well it's not young is it? And what are you then tethersend? A group?

tethersend · 17/11/2012 14:26

I'm a Monty python fan, thebody Grin

It's a famous line from The Life Of Brian. I was being facetious Wink

thebody · 17/11/2012 14:29

Lol knew had heard it somewhere. Good one.

nailak · 17/11/2012 14:32

"recognising the overall sensibilities, culture and traditions of the host country, as I hope I have done in the many countries I have lived in all over the world."

I hate this host country bull shit, this country is not "hosting" me, it is my country, I was born and raised here, went to school and uni here, had my kids here, it is my home, the only country I know. Becuase i cover does not suddenly make me a visitor in a "host" country, where as 10 years ago when I didn't cover it was just my country full stop.

I recognise the culture and traditions, the culture of respect, tolerance, being bad at bargaining, embarrassed about talking about money, always queuing up. What has this got to do with the way I dress?

65 is so not elderly and is certainly not an excuse to be racist or bigoted!

Must say, I thought she was older than that!

My Mum is about her age and it was her that introduced me to my leftiness Grin

FromEsme · 17/11/2012 14:49

I was wondering about the folks with no faces, thinking this was some new and awful thing those terrible Muslims had come up with.

AmberLeaf · 17/11/2012 14:49

I was wondering what folks with no faces was about!

thebody · 17/11/2012 15:31

Amber, I think 65 is elderly but ghats not really important anyway.

My point was that some posters have dismissed her as an 'old duck' and far worse 'smelly and Musty'.

I totally agree that her age is no excuse to be a racist or a bigot and I also don't agree that her age makes her views less important than others who are maybe younger.

There is a lot of ageism on some posts and I objected to that. Old and musty and out of touch do not automatically go together.
