I am surprised by the amount of people who associate 'vicious, nasty, racism' only with extremes such as EDL et al. I think racism can be at its most vicious and nasty when it's institutionalised, subtle and passes by largely unnoticed. That is a damning indictment of the times we live in, IMO.

I live in East London, where there is a growing population of people who refuse to integrate with the people who were actually there before them. They use religion as an excuse not to mix with the local population, particularly their children; or they actively pay to educate their children separately. They are also largely middle class and white: The Pay or Prayers who will do anything to avoid their child being at school with an asian majority.

Afraid to break it to anyone who believes they are supremely British and white that you are not Shock Anglo saxons do not exist anymore and haven't for thousands of years.. Sorry if that upsets you. Nobody is truly British, this country had been raped and pillaged so much throughout history that we are all a bit of something even if our family tree as far as we can see back is all white British..

I personally would be bored if surrounded by purely white people who were born here.. zzzz. I love walking around and being surrounded by all kinds of people- be them a different race, religion, from a different country, different hair colour, disabled, gay, straight, bi, trans- I open my arms to you all- we all make the world an interesting place Smile

What, areas with large Muslim populations?

Yes, obviously. What's your point?

Report
SpringHeeledJack · 17/11/2012 12:29

since we're on to the subjective

I lived in East London for many (perhaps too many) years

the area was split between Bangladeshis/Cockneys

one group were friendly and neighbourly, the other not friendly and sometimes actively hostile

I saw many many incidents of casual and v v unpleasant racism from one to tother. Always in the same direction. It was quite awful.

see if you can guess which is which

The worst thing about the area was not the signs in Bengali, the smell of curry or the women with their heads covered. The worst thing about the area was the BNP stickers on every lamppost, the constant mutter about 'Them', the shit shoved through letter boxes and the hundreds of peeps who referred to Ol' Enoch as 'the best Prime Minister we never had'

Do people really think it matters if we have more than one language in a country? Or more than one dress style? There are loads if countries that have several different languages within them. Norway for example. Funny that no one is quoting that as an example if ghetto-ized living.

And do people really not understand just how offensive the word ghetto can be? Do you know the history of it or the second world war?

...that's why the right wing handwringers, banging on about failure to integrate, makes me Hmm

how the fuck are people supposed to integrate with other people who are downright hostile to them from the off?

Spring, I grew up and regularly visit my relatives in Handsworth.

There are vile racists of all creeds and colours and religions.

There are cheats, liars paedophiles and lazy arses of all colours.

What the fuck does 'one way racism or 'one side' mean.

Bloody daft. Humans are individuals not groups.

What a facile and racist remark.

But sums up the liberal bandwagon hoppers.

Personally, I'd like to live in a society where the respect flows both ways, recognising the overall sensibilities, culture and traditions of the host country, as I hope I have done in the many countries I have lived in all over the world.

During which travels, I note, I encountered some lovely people and some downright twats. Of all creeds and colours, none of which I would have dreamed of lumping together as 'boring' based on the colour of their skin.

I was lucky enough to meet CDW on several occasions; she's an intelligent, cosmopolitan woman who had travelled extensively. I see no evidence of 'racism' in this article, though people will always look for an unpleasant twist to suit an agenda.

And to add to make one section of the population seem untouchable leads us to jimmy saville and vile paedophiles in Rochdale.

Thea men got away with crimes because they were seen as untouchable.

V v dangerous thinking.

The only thing you could criticise her for is the "can't read English" jibe. She's entitled to feel insecure in an area where people are all part of the same community, ie not hers. And I think she commented that neither the men or women would look at her. There are areas in my city that are no go, whether it's men hanging around the streets in groups or youths.

Report
FromEsme · 17/11/2012 12:55

PlantsDieArid she's obviously not that cosmopolitan if she is so terrified of Muslim men.

How can you not see ?I?m surprised any of the people who might object could read what I wrote as it is written in English" as a racist remark? It is such disgusting stereotyping.

So would all Muslim women feel safe in an area, let's say poor area, where only white people live? Is she racist?

Report
BristolBanshee · 17/11/2012 12:57

Assuming that the Muslim woman is not white, hell she can be white too.

Report
FromEsme · 17/11/2012 12:58

Maybe the men and women just DIDN'T look at her. Do you walk along the street looking at people? She felt uncomfortable because she wasn't used to being in that sort of area, not because of the way anyone acts. My mother is exactly the same when she visits me. "Oooh did you see the way those women looked at us?" "Oh that man in the shop was so rude because we're white." Bollocks. No-one is looking/not looking/being rude. They're just getting on with shit and if you are walking around acting like everyone is so weird then maybe you'll get people's backs up. Hardly surprising.

Report
BristolBanshee · 17/11/2012 13:00

So no group of men, Asian, White, Nigerian, Somalian, FRnech or whatever can't make a woman feel uncomfortable? And if they do she's racist?

What about a group of hoodies at 10pm? Is that unfair to all youths if you're frightened?

Report
PlantsDieArid · 17/11/2012 13:02

It was an ill-judged remark, certainly, though i suspect deliberately provocative and tongue-in-cheek. She also says she has many friends and acquaintances who are Muslims; I fail to see how that makes her 'vile' and 'racist.'

Report
FromEsme · 17/11/2012 13:03

What point are you trying to make BristolBansee ? It's not clear.

If someone is scared of a group of people based on their race, then yes, they are being racist. If someone is scared of a group of youths, is it unfair on the youths? If you write a big old article in the paper about it, yes, I kind of think it is.

Report
FromEsme · 17/11/2012 13:04

Oh she has Muslim FRIENDS. Well that's fine then, if some of her friends are Muslim, she can't possibly be racist.

I don't think, in these times of the BNP, EDL and so on, being deliberately provocative is very funny. More likely she realised she'd been a bit of a twat and tried to say something funny rather than offering the apology she should have.

You might not like it, but the reality is that there are parts of the major cities in this country where you can feel fearful and like an outsider.

My exP works in Bradford and he was given a briefing at work when he started about areas of the city that are better avoided and not safe at night for white people. You can squeal about being racist all you like, but this was the plain truth, spoken by liberal people who don't have a racist bone in their body, bit were speaking for experience.

Of course, the same applies for ethnic minorities in many areas of major cities, and there wouldn't be a fuss if a member of the ethnic minority had said the same thing. It's just not PC for a white person to say it

'Batty old musty smelling women'

What a vile remark to make. So all old women smell musty do they??

All white middle class people are racist or fraudsters or paedophiles!

All Muslim men are sexist paedophiles, all black men are street robbers.

All white people are boring? All Muslim women can't speak English?

The wholesale labelling of groups on this thread is quite frankly shocking.

WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS....

Report
BristolBanshee · 17/11/2012 13:14

Yes, the every single person who is Muslim is good. No possibility that people weren't welcoming or made her feel like she shouldn't be there. There's no group that prey on white vulnerable girls, no group that think anyone but Muslims are bad etc etc.

The fact is all humans can be unwelcoming and racist. It's rather dumb to suggest otherwise. Her feelings are valid, well I have no reason to think otherwise as I wasn't there. She was describing a day not her view upon the whole Asian/Muslim community.
