Well she fits in very well with the DM ethos.

Disgusting person

Where the hell was that? Must pop in later....

Rollmops · 19/11/2012 13:33

Are asking me where it was? On Ken HS, going towards Olympia on the left hand side of the road, past Waitrose. Couple of shops there selling fruit, posters ahem, etc.

Rollmops · 19/11/2012 13:34

Are you, even.

On the same side? The wee Iranian shops with all the decorations outside? Very unlikely to be pics of Osama! They can be a bit grumpy sometimes, especially when tourists wander in and poke the fruit. They are fine when I wander in (sometimes poking the fruit). They usually give nice pomegranate or cookies away (especially if you have kids with you).

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 13:40

I'm not sure being made to feel uncomfortable gives you good reason to be racist, funnily enough. It's shocking I know, but for most normal people, it's part of life, not fun, but not reason to start making stupid comments in the paper designed to stir up prejudice.

She obviously thinks the people she'd been trying to talk to should have accepted feeling uncomfortable, and got over it in order to give her directions. Because, of course, it does matter how those brown people feel, right? Hmm

flow4 · 19/11/2012 13:40

Sorry, Rollmops, but it WAS inside her head. As far as I can work out, the people she judges so quickly did nothing, except perhaps look at her funny. The long list of assumptions she made (see above) were entirely invented, presumably based on her own fear and prejudice.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/11/2012 13:43

Rollmops

An "ethnic" shopkeeep was rude to me once therefore all ethnic people must be rude and refuse to speak to women. Hmm

A lad in school used to swear at me because I was cleverer than him - is it valid to extrapolate his reaction to all men?

BTW I regard Harpy as a compliment!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 13:44

That's shocking, chaz.

A polish women refused to curtsey to me the other day. Sad

I may be traumatized for life.

flow4 · 19/11/2012 13:44

Ties someone to a rock and looks for food to poo on! < Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 13:44

(And I'll also put down 'harpy' with 'nest of vipers' in the compliment pile. Grin)

Rollmops · 19/11/2012 13:48

Ever had 'people look at you funny'? Thought not. If somebody stares at you with flaming hatred, you recognise it. It's a bit different than a look you might get at your local Tescos. I don't scare easily, but my little stand-off at that 'wee shop' made me feel really, really uncomfortable.
I wasn't tourist, I lived in SKen and wasn't 'poking their fruit'.
Angry

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/11/2012 13:49

LRD

I hope you will judge all people of Polish origin accordingly from now on (including anyone who may or may not be Polish but looks like they could possibly be Polish)!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 13:49

Yeah, definitely, must be cos they weren't white, rollmops. You proved it right there with your description of their scary staring flaming hatred.

(Or, erm, it could just be some random nasty individual, right? Like normal people would assume?)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 13:50

chazs - of course! What do you take me for?! Wink

Rollmops · 19/11/2012 13:50

Sweeping statements made by you, not me. I said that I can entirely sympathise with Dickson Wright as experiences like these can leave one rather unnerved. Nowhere did I say that all 'ethnic people' are rude.

Dragon, it's terribly fitting, no?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 13:52

What exactly are 'ethnic people', roll? Hmm

You are defending CDW who was stereotyping a group. If you made a mistake and intended your searing story of, erm, a nasty look someone gave you in a posh bit of London, while they were being not-quite-being-of-skin, to have been a separate thread, maybe you should repost?

Frontpaw · 19/11/2012 13:52

You can't get much whiter than me!

Just to clarify, I didn't say I dont want to integrate. As far as I am aware I am fully integrated. However, that is my point. I shouldn't have to prove it. I am entitled to an off day without being labelled an ignorant immigrant.

For example (and this is true). If I was trying to console an irritated baby and deal with a rowdy toddler in Highfields I may get sympathetic looks/ irritated glances etc. When the same happened at a chippy in great yarmouth this summer, I got lots of scowling and an actual 'bloody pa*is'.

why would I choose to expose my kids to that? where they will be judged because of their skin anytime something happens?

what if that man really just didnt want to speak to her? what if the next one not only spoke to her, but gave her a full on snog... would she think this customary of all asians?

Now I dont think all white people are rascist, just cos of that idiot in great yarmouth. It wouldnt stop me going there again... I just think most people want an easy life... and that is why we like our little ghettos.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/11/2012 13:57

Rollmops
So the High St Ken Shopkeeper selling the OBL poster that gave you the filthy look was the same ethnicity as you? If so why did you feel so uncomfortable?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 14:00

Erm, roll, I fear she just might be taking the piss out of you ... what do you think an 'ethnic' person is?

Did you not know 'ethnicity' describes a property we all have?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/11/2012 14:01

LRD
Spot on!

Rollmops · 19/11/2012 14:02

Why would my ethnicity matter? The shopkeepers (there were few of them) glared at me, not I at them, you see.
Do you want to make this into a race issue, my dear harpie?
Oh, the posters they had for sale were definitely good ol'e Osama, sadly the world has been forced to learn that horrid face and most would recognise it anywhere.
