7 degrees and no hat or coat on babes in arms

Why do people do this? A woman just walked past me outside of Tesco with a baby in her arms. Thin sleepsuit - that's it. AIBU to think she should be keeping the poor little love all nice and snuggly?

I live in semi rural area where there are lots of open spaces and only do this if it's bitterly cold

honeytea · 16/11/2012 15:07

2 and a half year old had given himself an erection and his willy was poking over the top of his trousers. does this really happen? I am expecting a boy in december, no one has told me about this!

PuffPants · 16/11/2012 15:10

Oh god Honeytea, I had no idea about this either till I was changing DS one day (he was a few months old) and his willy was standing on end! I was so shocked but also afraid to google this as a search term... He's 2.9 now and a stiff willy (just through idly fiddling with it) is a very common sight!!

honeytea · 16/11/2012 15:14

oh my goodness, I'm glad I learnt about this from mumsnet, it's not the sort of thing you can ring MIL up and ask her is the same thing happened to DP. And yes I think if you googled it the police would be at your house withont he hour!

Nooneelseisallowedafergus · 16/11/2012 15:22

My ds1 around the time he was wearing pants, not nappies, when he was 2 and a bit, pulled his foreskin back and he hasn't looked back since.

I get regular updates, 'mummy, foreskin back (I did teach him the word as he asked what it was) willy big'.

Still haven't figured out the response to that statement Grin

TheSkiingGardener · 16/11/2012 15:24

I remember the first time I took DS's nappy off and found an erection. I threw a wet wipe over it and waited for it to go away!

The joys of boys.

I remember getting cats bum mouths and weird looks one day while pushing 6 month old DS in his buggy back from the shops to our old flat. It was probably colder than 7 degrees and he was wearing only a vest and pyjama shorts, and blanket only draped over his legs...

He actually had a temperature of nearly 42 degrees and I was just back from OOH with him after being fobbed off by the childrens A+E earlier that day about how a temperature and being hangy isn't a reason to go to A+E. His temperature was rising and I was at Tesco buying more ibuprofen and calpol...

You never know the full story.

Plus, I would always rather see a baby a bit chilly than see them wrapped up in about 5 layers and a snowsuit overheating.

honeytea · 16/11/2012 15:31

i think my DP is going to have to do all the nappies, if we have a girl i will do the nappies.

valiumredhead · 16/11/2012 15:46

Also, who says 'babe in arms'? Weird

Why is it weird just because you don't say it? Confused

OP, a quick dash from the car to Tescos will be fine - baby will be all snuggled up to its mum.

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 16/11/2012 16:27

Maybe you would like to come and attempt to keep a hat, socks and gloves on my toddler then?

And it has been the same since he was 5 weeks old. He used to grip his socks in his gums and pull his feet away till they came off. He would scream and thrash his head about until his hat came off.

I did however manage to keep a coat on him until this week. He's 21mo and has just learnt how to do zips.

He just doesn't like hats, gloves and socks.

Great! you have clean floors too, no need to hoover this weekend :)

MollyMurphy · 16/11/2012 16:54

7 degrees around here is pretty good weather. Maybe she was just walking the distance from the warm store to a warm car? I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that she was a neglectful parent.

ISeeThreadPeople · 16/11/2012 18:52

I've deliberately not read the thread. Can I have a point each for...

something about no socks

mother had coat on

poor little mite/love/babe

bet they didn't have a hat on

Hopefully some sensible replies too. Oh I love a cold baby thread.

ha! you missed out the pterodactyls Grin

I got accosted in a queue last month for 5 m.o. DD not having socks. Very agitated French lady who would not be put off ("NO - it is not OK").

It really, really was OK. Dd had just been lifted out of the cosy totes and was about to curl herself around me for some hot, fresh mother's milk.

The lady's parting shot was 'I bet you've got socks on'. I didn't (snurk). That made me happy. (snurk)

Socks are evil. Socks don't stay on (though I sometimes carry some in my pocket if needed to pacify grannies, who can feel useful putting them on my baby for 2 minutes). Socks make my feet sweat and give me some weird sensory deprivation feeling. In fact - I often walk barefoot, so long as the pavement looks clean & dry.

LDNmummy · 19/11/2012 01:58

I have a friend from Poland where the winters are of course far colder.

She is often shocked by British parents who have babies without socks or warm enough attire on.

I always find this quite ironic.

She can really tolerate the cold too.

LDNmummy · 19/11/2012 02:01

That's funny, I just saw your post puffpants.

Sirzy · 19/11/2012 03:20

This is the first winter DS has happily worn his hat/scarf/gloves when needed. He is 3 now. Coat was never negotiable but often a good fight the rest it wasn't worth fighting.

This year we have the opposite issue in as much as he won't go out at all without wearing his big coat and his hat scarf and gloves even on days a little jacket would be fine! I am hoping he is over it by summer!

I remember going to Glasgow for the day with my Mum near Christmas. I must've been about 7/8 years old I think. We were getting the train so I was really excited. I begged my Mum to let me bring my baby doll which I loved at the time. It was a very realistic life size baby doll. Of course half way through the trip I didn't want to carry it anymore so my Mum had to.

On the way home from Glasgow two older ladies started talking really loudly about how dreadful it was to see a baby out in December without a hat and a coat. My Mum got up and dropped the doll on their table. She didn't say a word. The ladies looked stunned...then started apologising to my Mum. We got off the train shortly after that. Grin
