AIBU to think MN not what I thought it would be

sidandlinus · 12/11/2012 22:16

After years of hearing about how influential and "middle class" MN is. I am I being unreasonable to think that I have found it (over past few months - so can't judge beyond this) a bit "meh2! A lot of the postings appear to be attention-seeking, middle-of-the-road and basically dull. Am I missing something?

OP perhaps this forum may be more your cup of flat white decaf?

TulisaLover · 12/11/2012 22:49

Indeed - it's a far cry from my epic 429 poster the other day, or even the 190 ish cleavage one.

WorraLiberty · 12/11/2012 22:49

You could have told me that before I twirled round

I think I drilled myself into the ground Sad

sidandlinus · 12/11/2012 22:49

I'm back but not sure if I'll get a fair hearing. I'm sorry if I posted in AIBU when I should have posted elsewhere. My question was a "this is what I thought MN was like" NOT ""this is what I want MN to be about". For those who have asked yes, I have posted elsewhere (only three posts in total - this is my third). First about cats, second about teenagers and then this one. I am not trawling MN looking for a reaction - just couldn't find where else to ask this question. Sorry if I have offended anyone. I do think MN is portrayed in media as being Mc and all about "yummy mummies" - this does not mean that I agree with this perception or the fact that people's lives are many-layered. I am well aware of different perspectives/lives/experiences - I am not sheltered -nor am I wanting MN to be anything other than it is, my question was perhaps best answered by ner members who may not be so F***g protective abou what was,in my opinion, a reasonable question. And yes, I think those who leap down someone throat and slag someone off, without giving them a chace, are bullies - so there you go.

Yy, I am a middle class cyber bully.

ilovesooty · 12/11/2012 22:50

Worra Grin

TulisaLover · 12/11/2012 22:51

Just give us an example of what you were expecting OP and we'll all be able to understand much better.

McChristmasPants2012 · 12/11/2012 22:52

MN ImperialStateKnickers is picking on mmmmeeeeeee

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 12/11/2012 22:53

sid

some get protective. Some just want a bit of silliness.

MN is very diverse, so it irritates a bit when people make assumptions

MamaMumra · 12/11/2012 22:53

So you aren't all middle class yummy mummies? Great! Thats me done then!

Bit better post op, till you got near the end of it.
You did do a 2nd post which wasnt much better than the first.
This 3rd one is a bit better again.
You are getting there, but really need to ditch the anger.
And, if you do intend to stay around, you may want to namechange, but that is up to you.
And yes, some posters may want to lay into you a bit because of your previous postings on here.

fwiw, you do have a point in what you are saying about how the media portrays MN.
Like another poster has said, the media do get it a bit wrong sometimes!!!

MaryZezItsOnlyJustNovember · 12/11/2012 22:56

Just for a second supposing you are being serious: There is loads of support for pet owners on the relevant boards.

There is masses of support on teenagers - true non-judgemental support for people who are having a horendous time and are at the end of their tethers.

The same applies to relationships, parenting, SN, mental health, loads of places.

However, in chat and particularly in aibu there are many people posting who like the sound of their own cyber-voices. Who have agendas to push and battles to fight. Some are of course attention seeking. Some are more serious.

To dismiss them all with "meh ... attention-seeking, middle-of-the-road and basically dull" shows that either you are interested in very little, or that you are reading the wrong bits of mumsnet.

Either way, you have shown yourself to be a bit shallow, dismissing a whole site without having the sense to see what it is really about.

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/11/2012 22:58

I'm not middle class.
I'm not even working class.
I am underclass.
But I take it up the arse.

So you see, I'm only here for the bumsex threads. Sorry to disappoint OP.

Hassled · 12/11/2012 22:58

I do agree that the media representation of MN (we're apparently all articulate, well educated, politically-aware early-adopters) is bollocks. The reality is that MN has a huge range of people with massively different views and experiences - that's what makes it interesting. Stick around - you'll get sucked in. The fact it isn't what you thought it would be isn't necessarily a bad thing.

amillionyears · 12/11/2012 22:58

Also, fwiw, some posters have very hard lives, and like to let off a bit of steam.
There are numerous topics on MN, so you might be best to avoid some of them in the future. Some posters only stick to certain topics.
I can name some of the "less rough" ones if you want. Though actually, there are other posters who would know them better than me.

WorraLiberty · 12/11/2012 22:58

What does " F***g" mean?

Faffining?

Fannying?

Frogging?

Frigging?

OliviaMumsnet · 12/11/2012 22:59

evening all
Hope we are all having a lovely Monday

BIWI · 12/11/2012 22:59

Well, OP, if you hadn't made your opening remarks so provocative and rude, then you might have got a better thread as a result.

MN isn't like the media loves to portray it. There are people from all walks of life here. We aren't 'yummy mummies'. Demographically, the site is biased towards better-educated women.

If you're finding it 'meh' then can I, politely, suggest that you're reading the wrong threads?

Have you read about the Christmas appeal? Have you read about the work that the wonderful Woolly Hugs crew do for bereaved families, and families of premature babies?

Just a couple of examples.

TulisaLover · 12/11/2012 22:59

Wonderful Olivia -thanks for asking. Hope you are too.

Doingakatereddy · 12/11/2012 22:59

God, I love MN - there is nowhere else in my life I can use the word cunt & no one bats an eye. Truly liberating.

MamaMumra · 12/11/2012 23:00

Ooh, who isn't rough?

Tweasels · 12/11/2012 23:00

Sorry OP but that's bulllllllll shit.

You said posts were attention seeking, dull and also accused everyone of being cyber bullies.

So you can slag people off but others can't?

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 12/11/2012 23:01

No-one who has been on Baby Names could think it was dull.
