AIBU to think MN not what I thought it would be

sidandlinus · 12/11/2012 22:16

After years of hearing about how influential and "middle class" MN is. I am I being unreasonable to think that I have found it (over past few months - so can't judge beyond this) a bit "meh2! A lot of the postings appear to be attention-seeking, middle-of-the-road and basically dull. Am I missing something?

Tweasles if I was single, without a child, and could afford it , I would book it tomorrow!

Shaky · 13/11/2012 00:02

I'm a grumpy, old cow too

Tweasels · 13/11/2012 00:03

You need better adware Imperial.

You'll thank me one day when you're wondering how to book the worst possible trip round Europe.

In the mean time accept my sincerest apologies.

Tweasels · 13/11/2012 00:04

I get car sick.

TuftyFinch · 13/11/2012 00:05

Oh my goodness! Is that how it works Imperial? I always think 'wow, how did they know I was looking for a new sofa/coat/camper'. How do I make my computer forget what I looked at? Can I?

TuftyFinch · 13/11/2012 00:06

What in the name is adware? I'm such a bloody luddite! I used to be cutting edge. No longer.

Thumbwitch · 13/11/2012 00:09

ADware blocks ads from your computer, tis very useful. And possibly rather MC, or not. Who knows.

ImperialStateKnickers · 13/11/2012 00:10

Being serious for one tiny second... there must be a way of stopping the faceless www tracking what I look at and stopping them from sending adverts my way. Is that what 'adware' is? I wouldn't mind so much but I'd really rather dds didn't get bombarded with (for example) the 'used underwear' from eBay that someone had found with much hilarity and posted on AIBU a couple of weeks ago.

ImperialStateKnickers · 13/11/2012 00:11

xposted... don't care if it's MC or not, send linky NOW.

Thumbwitch · 13/11/2012 00:17

Don't have a decent link - and am not sufficiently tech-proficient to understand it properly - but I think it stops tracking thingies from lodging in your computer and then that stops them from targeting you with specific ads. But I could be wrong. www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-adware-spyware-scumware-remover.htm this might help but might be too techie (it is for me).
There's something you can do with cookies as well, and clearing your temp files/ internet history - but I don't knooooww!!

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2012 00:19

Imperial Adaware is a great spyware splatter...although there are a few other good free ones too. You can't have too many spyware splatters because what one misses, the other will pick up.

Also, AVG is a great free virus guard.

I can PM you a link if you like?

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2012 00:20

C.Cleaner is the easiest way to remove history and cookies etc...that's free too.

Can you tell how tight I am? Grin

TuftyFinch · 13/11/2012 00:20

So, your know over there >>>>>
do we all get the same adverts?

I've got Junior Crew clothing? never shopped or looked at website
Centreparcs: same

TuftyFinch · 13/11/2012 00:22

Now I've got Boden and Open University

Thumbwitch · 13/11/2012 00:23

I can't see any ads over there >>>> at the mo, dunno why. Grin

But on FB, I get location-appropriate ads, so different from the rest of you. Something to do with IP locator stuff (the same stuff that blocks me from watching BBC iPlayer etc.)

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2012 00:24

I've got something about summer holidays?

I never notice ads though...I seem to have a mental ad blocker built into my brain Grin

Thumbwitch · 13/11/2012 00:25

oo! Just checked on Threads I'm On and lo! I have location-specific ads there too! Shock Never noticed that before. [dim]

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2012 00:26

I've had this woman's page bookmarked for years

She's a great techie and everything marked as 'free' really is.

Linky for the tight arses

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2012 00:27

I never noticed that either Thumbwitch Shock

TuftyFinch · 13/11/2012 00:28

Hmmmm,I need to decide if I care about the ads. My first reaction is that I do but then if they target me by age/links/visited I don't know if I do care. I think I should. But. There are more things.
Anyway.
Maybe.
Bed time.

Good night.

TuftyFinch · 13/11/2012 00:29

Now they want me to go to Malta!
hmmmphhhh

ImperialStateKnickers · 13/11/2012 00:29

There's nothing over there>>> at the moment.

Too knackered to do stuff tonight, but will look at it all tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions/advice/links.

I've got a busy day tomorrow so really should go to bed - goodnight all.

quirrelquarrel · 13/11/2012 00:32

Mumsnet Classix is where it's at, OP me laddie. Off you pop.

MrsRhettButler · 13/11/2012 00:34

See op, we are not a myth...

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 13/11/2012 00:37

Hello Sid

The thing is, whatever your intentions, you're calling us middle of the road, attention seeking and dull. I know you're not naming names or claiming that everyone's like that, but you appear to be talking about most of us. Could you honestly have expected a good reaction to that comment? Anywhere?

All of human life is on MN. It's simply not possible to say 'most' of us are anything really, but if you want to get a sense of us at our best, go look at the Classics topic.

SPsFanjo.... Where exactly are you leasing us space for the Puddle?
