AIBU to think MN not what I thought it would be

sidandlinus · 12/11/2012 22:16

After years of hearing about how influential and "middle class" MN is. I am I being unreasonable to think that I have found it (over past few months - so can't judge beyond this) a bit "meh2! A lot of the postings appear to be attention-seeking, middle-of-the-road and basically dull. Am I missing something?

Heyyyyyyy Olivia, my favourite mumsnethqer.

Will you confirm my theory that you were avidly reading the threads at the weekend and they only got deleted when Catherine came into work on Sunday?

Please, it would make my day Smile.

Shaky · 12/11/2012 23:02

Hey Worra' where are your crew?

amillionyears · 12/11/2012 23:02

Apparently there are 2 million of us on here ,though I always find that figure hard to accept.
To call a lot of the 2 million women postings "attention seeking, middle-of-the-road and basically dull" is a bit of a sweeping statement, and maybe not your finest hour.

Tweasels · 12/11/2012 23:03

F***g = fanking - wanking ones fanny. It's wot the middle classes do.

ImperialStateKnickers · 12/11/2012 23:03

Hi Sid

I think I know what you mean about how we're portrayed in the media. As you've already seen, we're a far broader church than the yummy mummys. In fact I don't think I regularly interact with any YMs on here!

I've been on here for a couple of years now and didn't dare comment, let alone post in AIBU for the first six months. MNHQ have got this disclaimer thing at the top, but I sometimes wonder if new members shouldn't get a welcome pack email with advice, like 'AIBU is the true home of the Nest Of Vipers'.

Chat gets about the same amount of traffic, but is less likely to attract vitriol.

Once you're used to the place, AIBU can be the source of more PMSL moments than anywhere else.

amillionyears · 12/11/2012 23:03

Never done that before!

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 12/11/2012 23:04

Have you posted to inform us that something in life is not like wot the Daily Mail said it would be...?

Wow, you're going to be busy! Grin

Doingakatereddy · 12/11/2012 23:04

I suspect Worra would be more likely to have a 'Firm' rather than a 'crew'. But, I digress & appear to be one of the MN 'Royalty' girl crush members.

TulisaLover · 12/11/2012 23:05

Only two million? Meh2 - I thought I had finally found a forum deserving off my ramblings.

WorraLiberty · 12/11/2012 23:06

Oh God whenever Olivia pops up, it reminds me of being caught chatting to my sister in bed on a school night.

My Mum would open the door and say something similar but with a death stare Grin

RubyrooUK · 12/11/2012 23:06

Alright OP, I've got a reasonable response to you.

Mumsnet is like the internet itself - there are bits where you get nothing but incredible support from strangers (miscarriage/bereavement) who understand your feelings; there are bits where it is more like a group of friends in the pub discussing whether your boyfriend is a tosser or not (relationships); and there are bits like AIBU, where people bring along their strongest opinions.

So depending on what you feel like - support, a laugh, advice - you can choose what Mumsnet is like for you at any one time.

The reason it is seen as middle class/influential is because Mumsnet campaigns often reach the national press. In fact Mumsnet threads regularly become stories in the Daily Mail. Wait three days after a hot thread and there it is! So the topics discussed on here are acknowledged as making a larger impact than simply in the forum itself.

Um, I'm a bit tired now so I've run out of steam.....Blush

McChristmasPants2012 · 12/11/2012 23:06

hi Olivia

SomersetONeil · 12/11/2012 23:07

You haven't asked a 'reasonable question' though, have you? Confused

You've waded into a group of people who are all new to you and described them as:

  • meh
  • attention-seeking
  • middle-of-the-road
  • basically dull

Would you walk up to a group of people you didn't know at the school gate or in the pub and say that to them, and not expect some sort of a reaction?

Basically, do you not have any social nous?!

WorraLiberty · 12/11/2012 23:07

I'm crewless and feeling naked

Shaky · 12/11/2012 23:07

I was informed that Worra had a crew/army.

Although a firm sounds much better, well ard

MaryZezItsOnlyJustNovember · 12/11/2012 23:07

Tsk, she doesn't have a crew.

She has a krew.

ffs, get your terminology right Hmm

Tweasels · 12/11/2012 23:08

I've got your back Worra, as long as you put some knickers on.

RubyrooUK · 12/11/2012 23:08

Oh I see that while I was posting my reasonable response, others did it better first. Oops.

Shaky · 12/11/2012 23:08

Can I join your crew/army?
I'd hate for you to feel lonely

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 12/11/2012 23:08

Worra has a yacht!!!! Shock

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 12/11/2012 23:09

She is a lawyer!!!?

ImperialStateKnickers · 12/11/2012 23:09

Worra did you ever see any of the Thread That Must Not Be Mentioned? 'Cos some of it was vair vair funny.

WorraLiberty · 12/11/2012 23:09

Do you all promise to dress like Elves? Grin

Please say yes

MaryZezItsOnlyJustNovember · 12/11/2012 23:09

That's the problem with reasoned response Ruby - it takes too fecking long to type Grin.

Much better to post [meh] and be done with it.

Shaky · 12/11/2012 23:10

Oops sorry Mary I meant Krew obvs

Hang head in shame
