Door bell goes and as im sat with ds on my knee feeding him i asked dp to get the door (secretly already knowing it was Jehovah's Witnesses), so off he goes thinking its his dad popped round.

He opened the door and was faced with 2 older gentlemen whose first words to him where " Hello, Can i ask do you have a question you'd like to ask god?"

My dp thought for a few seconds and goes, " yes, how can i get rid of this flu? Ive tried beechams and lemsips but nothing shifting it!"

The 2 men stood stoney faced and persuaded him to look into his sole for meanings of being unwell Hmm i could see them through the window and just couldnt stop laughing Smile

I get tired of this 'you have to respect other people's beliefs' nonsense. No I bloody well don't, respect is earned. I'm no more going to respect someone's belief that I'll burn in hell for eternity unless I believe what they believe anymore than I'd respect someone's belief that women are second-class citizens who belong in the kitchen. I certainly won't respect their beliefs when they attempt to proselytize to me on my own bloody doorstep.

As the saying goes, 'Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one and it's fine to be proud of it, but please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around... and PLEASE don't try to shove it down mine or my child's throat.'

YANBU.

Anyone who chooses to bother me on the basis that they want to 'convert' me or whatever deserve what they get.

My grandad keeps them in conversations for ages, tying them up in knots with questions about their religion. They leave pretty quickly! Grin

Feminine the JWs come to our door every week with a new pamphlet, they are all out trying to convert my Muslim DH. We were nice at first so they keep on bloody coming...

Wish he'd mocked now then they might have fucked off.

Thinking about the whole "respect others beliefs" thing. How exactly is it respecting someone's beliefs to turn up at their house uninvited and try and convert them?

Yes, talking about religion in an annoying way is exactly like rape...

And I am generally classifiable as militantly atheist...

When i gave birth to DD the JW were round every thursday and it was the highlight of my week, I was so lonely and harassed, The lovely JW lady made me tea and listened to me moaning and after a few weeks gave up giving me booklets and just chit chatted. got me through a rough lonely time...

bruxeur No, I am not a Witness.

Imagine how welcome I'd feel if I were though?

There are some here however.

Lets face it, it would have been even less funny had it been a double glazing man on the doorstep!

op wanted to poke fun, and show how witty Hmm her DP was. The whole joke played upon the fact it was JWs at her door.

Normal educated JW's do not expect prayers and soul searching to fix ailments.God knows who some of you have bumped in to!

Yes, TheBigJessie the tongue-in-cheek quote I posted was totally saying that 'talking about religion in an annoying way is exactly like rape'. Hmm

I try to respect that everyone has their own beliefs. However I expect the same respect back. If someone wants to choose to knock on my door when i am spending quality time with my family to try and force their beliefs on me, then that in my opinion is rude.
I am polite but sometimes they are quite pushy. If they do not take the initial "I'm not interested, thank you have a nice day" as I'm closing the door then I will be rude.

I generally ignore the door. They can see me but I figure my door, my choice.

So, you're saying that wouldn't be rape now? That's some backtracking!

I'd like to share something else.

My family have suffered very badly from the teachings of the watchtower.

One example is my DH , he is a twin, his brother has stated he will never give him blood (should he need it) My own Mother wouldn't give me hers....do you all understand now? I don't dig their ideas, but I am very closely connected.

But...I can't stand silly, uneducated ideas about them either.

Many religions have odd aspects, they are protected from being mocked. I'd like to see the same thing here.

I'm saying that if you thought that quote was seriously stating that rape is exactly like discussing religion with someone, you need to pull your head out of your arse and go buy yourself a clue.

TheBigJessie

I think you're reading too much into that quote. Lots of people refer to having had religion "shoved down their throats". It's a tongue in cheek quote in essence saying keep you private business to yourself.

Report
TheBigJessie · 11/11/2012 12:55

So, you can use hyperbole, but nobody else can? An interesting point of view.

I'm saying that your simile is ill-thought-out, graphic, and minimising of sexual violence.

You think so? You've never seen all the threads about funny ways people have dealt with cold callers then?

"Many religions have odd aspects, they are protected from being mocked. I'd like to see the same thing here."

I think you'd have a hard time finding any odd ideas that are protected from being mocked.

As far as I know, the only religion that is protected (by itself) from mockery is Islam. And they tend to choose C4, nails and strong acids. Is that a direction the JayDubs are looking towards?

Oh chill out TheBigJessie or alternatively toddle off to feminism and start a thread about how everyone but you "minimises sexual violence".

Report
TheBigJessie · 11/11/2012 13:04

Why would I? That would be a factually-inaccurate fred-about-fred, if I were to claim that everybody-but-[me] minimised sexual violence.

Two people on a thread do not comprise the population of Rutland, never mind the world!
