I had the coil fitted a few months ago. My periods are irregular so I've just had my first proper one since having it fitted. I can handle the horrific period pain but what I can't handle is the huge patch of blood I'm leaving behind every time I sit down. I was mortally embarrassed today at a toddler group because I was leaving blood everywhere and had to leave to get changed. I've had to cancel a meeting tonight with a client because I know they have white leather seats!!! I don't want to be one of those women who can't get in with normal life because of her period! I'm using what I thought was heavy duty pads but I'm soaking through them every half hour to hour (sorry way way too much information I know). Please tell me what I can use to handle this? My body us being extremely unreasonable!

Oh you poor love. Were your periods that heavy before you had the coil fitted?

Hi mollys sorry you are having a horrible time. Don't know anything about the coil, but I have had tablets prescribed for heavy periods. To lessen the flow and stop the pain a bit. They worked for me-Mefenamic Acid.

No I've not soprano, I've only ever had bleeding like this post labour and when the coil was first fitted.

If they're alaways a problem by being so heavy you could ask the doctor about endometrial ablation but I think the drawback is that you have to be sure you def don't want to be pregnant again as it destroys the lining of the womb. Not the right thing if you're hoping for more dc in the future.

If your going to take them tablets ask for tablets to protect your stomach as they are very hard on your stomach. Also take with food or you will be in agony.

Oh I feel your pain, I dread work in my first 2 days on as I feel like I'm being gawked at having to go to the loo every hour, then being afraid to go anywhere in case there's no loo near the rest of the time! I have the coil in but am also on dianette for my skin, I do still give myself the break but my flow is lighter than usual, would that be an option?

Some on here have been given different tablets but for the same thing. I didn't know that Rachel, I haven't noticed anything with them with my stomach. I haven't needed them for a while but does it say take with food?

I have incredibly heavy periods. Sanitary towels get changed v. frequently (never got on with tampons :( ), I wear dark clothing that won't show up if I do leak and, like you, I avoid sitting down places if I think it might stain! I've also taken to putting a towel down in bed so if I do leak overnight it won't stain through to the mattress.

I recently bought a mooncup, will be trying that to see if I get on with that any better.

Mefenamic acid made me vomit copiously. First month I took them, I thought I had a bug. Second month was too much of a coincidence and I read the contraindications!

I've been prescribed tranexamic acid now. But still haven't had the nerve to try them yet, as gp said I may have a similar reaction.

I was sick for about 36 hours. But lost weight, so ever cloud....

Thanks everyone. I might try that moon cup then. I really wanted to go au natural with hormones/medication which is why I had the coil fitted. Really appreciate everyone's posts

My first period after having a coper cool was like this - they did settle down, though were always heavier than without the coil.

It's horrible, you poor thing. Is it a copper coil you have? Any especial reason you've chosen it?

Whilst you sort out a solution, get yourself some tena lady maxi night plus or maybe even just the extra plus ones. They're more pricey than STs but much longer, wider & more absorbent. And for anyone pregnant reading this, they make fantastic maternity pads too.

I was exactly the same as this and a mooncup changed everything. Now use a mooncup and a very thin towel on really heavy days. No embarrassment and much cheaper to boot

I have a copper coil. I agree with it settling down. My periods were quite vicious to start with but after 6 months or so, they were almost back to normal.

I've had a copper coil, but while periods as heavy as before I ever used hormonal contraceptives, there is a difference. It's heavier than before for the first two days, but the period as a whole is a day or two less than before. Almost as if it's the same quantity, but comes out faster, IYSWIM. Luckily, I'm not finding it too bad at all.

I had to have the copper coil removed because it made my periods completely unmanageable, I got on really well with the mirena instead.

That is a very heavy loss though, if it carries on I'd be thinking about seeing a dr sooner rather than later if I were you.

Thanks everyone. Yeah it's the copper coil. I don't think I want any more kids so I thought this would be a good long term solution. I've suffered with acne and depression in the past so wanted to avoid anything hormonal. The only thing that puts me off the moon cup is my coil strings, am I in danger of pulling them when I take the cup out?

I had a copper coil for 3 years, and my periods were dreadful. It was literally like post labour every month. I'd always had light bleeds so to go from that to this took some getting used to. Mine never settled although GP assured me they would.

I'm trying to sort mine out with Acupuncture. The fecker should have stopped after 5 days.
