To not want to put my life on hold because of my bloody period!

mollysmum82 · 09/11/2012 20:18

Pardon the pun.

I had the coil fitted a few months ago. My periods are irregular so I've just had my first proper one since having it fitted. I can handle the horrific period pain but what I can't handle is the huge patch of blood I'm leaving behind every time I sit down. I was mortally embarrassed today at a toddler group because I was leaving blood everywhere and had to leave to get changed. I've had to cancel a meeting tonight with a client because I know they have white leather seats!!! I don't want to be one of those women who can't get in with normal life because of her period! I'm using what I thought was heavy duty pads but I'm soaking through them every half hour to hour (sorry way way too much information I know). Please tell me what I can use to handle this? My body us being extremely unreasonable!

The mooncup shouldn't affect your strings - it sits quite low. There is a knack to getting it in the right place though and a year on I still don't quite trust it on the heaviest days and wear a towel in support (even though I have only had one major daytime leak when I obviously hadn't put it in properly).

Magrathea · 09/11/2012 21:27

I don't think there is ny problem with the mooncup and the coils strings because I don't think the cup goes far nough in. I've never had any problems in two years

SrirachaGirl · 09/11/2012 21:34

Oh silly OP, you don't have to put your life on hold because of periods! Find the right product and you can do gymnastics, horse-riding, play tennis, run a board meeting, work on a construction site...Grin.

I'm sorry for your troubles, really. That's no fun. No practical advice but hope you get it sorted soon Thanks.

lovelyladuree · 09/11/2012 21:44

You poor thing. I don't know anything about coils but I've had an implant in my arm for nearly three years and not had one period in all that time. Lush. Almost time for it to be changed, so dreading that bit but worth it. I hope you get things sorted.

EldonAve · 10/11/2012 07:44

I would recommend you see your GP & ask for a gynae referral
GP can give you tablets to reduce your bleeding in the meantime

ivanapoo · 10/11/2012 09:11

I am not sure that amount of bleeding is normal actually, yes it does increase with the coil and in my case settled down after about 6 months but that sounds really heavy. It might be the coil has dislodged or something, I would get it checked out ASAP.

Mooncup didn't handle my heaviest days either.

I found lillets applicator tampons in the highest absorbency (quite hard to find in shops but loads better than tampax) plus a pad was the best.

IvantaOuiOui · 10/11/2012 09:52

My periods have pushed three coils out. Only option left is full hysterectomy. I wear two super plus extra tampons side by side plus two enormous maxi pad mattresses and that lasts nearly an hour. Worth a try.

beware Mefenamic Acid if you plan to have any/more children - it's not very fertility friendly.

I've had ablation and it didn't work for me. But it does for most people. Have found if I avoid sugar the bleeding is less. Also vast amounts of Paramol help.

BertieBotts · 10/11/2012 10:13

There's an FAQ on the mooncup site which says it's fine to use with a coil, IIRC.

Might be worth getting the mooncup but also getting it checked out?

MadBanners · 10/11/2012 11:10

I had a copper coil March last year, the first cpl periods were ok, slightly heavier, then for about 8-9 months after, I was very very heavy. I worked then and did long days, so 7 am -7.30pm and normally rarely got time for toilet breaks, but i was doubling up with huge pads and tampons and still having to change every 2 hours. I also started getting awful rectal pain while on my period, like i was being stabbed there! Went to the Gp who basically said that she suffers with heavy periods, it is just one of those things and to basically deal with it. She did prescribe mefenamic acid, which i used for maybe 2-3 months while on a period, and it did help in making the pain and better and making me lighter. Not had to use them for nearly 6 months now though and i have gone back to normal.

Allegrogirl · 10/11/2012 11:16

I usually have quite light periods but also bleed ridiculously on the copper coil. Ended up slightly anaemic which was a first. I had it removed and went back on the pill. It is miserable. I hope you get it sorted soon.

wheresmespecs · 10/11/2012 11:23

Never had a coil, but I used to have very very heavy periods before having dc. It used to pour out of me. I would get dizzy, cold fingers, blue lips etc and it was SO painful.

The only way I could cope with the first 2 days was to wear a maximum absorption tampon with 2 thick towels, one lengthways and one widthways, then wear 2 pairs of pants, one small and one pair of grannies - and if it was really bad, cycling shorts over all that, under my work clothes.

I had to change all tampons and pads every 2 hours, but that much protection was the only way i could stop leaking. also take paracetamol and codeine, ibuprofen and buscopan.

Sharptic · 10/11/2012 11:29

Hello!

I had the copper coil in for 3yrs.

Had the same problem with heavy periods but just put up with it. I wish I had it out rather than putting up with it. It was quick and easy to remove and periods went straight back to light flow as they were before.

I had also been getting pains at ovulation each month which gradually over the years got worse and lasted longer until they were quite painful and started to get me down. I had the coil out and have never had that pain since!

Don't suffer, there's no need!

LaCerbiatta · 10/11/2012 11:43

Would you prefer not to have the mirena coil because of the hormones? There shouldn't be any systemic effects as it's released locally and it could be the end of periods!

mizu · 10/11/2012 11:49

I had the copper coil in for a few years and my periods were making my life a misery. Used to feel quite faint and completely knackered. Try going to the toilet often when you are a lecturer!

Had the mirena for 18 months before that, great for periods as had hardly any blood but made me feel terrible.

Two years ago i had endometrial ablation which changed my life, have felt so much better. Have just noticed that my periods are getting heavier again though which the doctor said might happen.
