to think DD is too young for Teen posters

So DH got DS got his Beano comic the other day and DD (7) got 'Go Girl' (she liked the look of the tat free gift which was a notebook/stickers and whatnot). It also seemed to be fairly innocuous - some younger stuff - kittens and ponies and a bit of older stuff - fashion and pop stars.

Now she wants to put the poster up on her wall - One Direction. She vaguely knows who they are but it just feels a bit 'old' for me.

DH says it's harmless and I am not sure why I feel so strongly that i don't want her to - I am not usually uptight at all.

So I have told DH and DD that I will put it to the Mumsnet Jury Grin

cocolepew I found myself singing along to the 'Whistle' song in a cafe before I realised Blush

seeker · 05/11/2012 12:43

My ds had a room covered in Stephen Gerrard posters when he was 6. Was he too young?

squeakytoy · 05/11/2012 12:44

when i was 7 or 8, I had Bay City Rollers posters up, as well as David Cassidy.. by 12 I had moved on to AC/DC, Whitesnake, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith...

InNeedOfAPennyForTheGuysBrandy · 05/11/2012 12:49

I know ruby, terrible terrible.

Out of interest is it true the telly tubbys were based on a acid trip?

RubyFakeNails · 05/11/2012 12:52

I don't know but Captain Pugwash was full of filth!

missymoomoomee · 05/11/2012 13:15

At that age I was in love with Shakin Stevens and Adam Ant I had posters up, I listened to their songs despite them probably having a sexual undertone (although I can't really remember but most songs do if you look hard enough) and I didn't pick up on it.

DD1 met JLS after she had been 'in love' with Aston for a year (she had posters up and the duvet cover etc) and when he said 'Aw you are just gorgeous' to her she just said 'yes I know my Mum tells me every day' back to him. It was the teenage girls that were going and screaming in their faces and getting a bit lairy. Kids that age don't care about song lyrics or if there are sexual undertones, in fact if they are anything like my lot they pretty much make up their own words to songs anyway.

I don't see what harm a poster can do really.

Whitamakafullo · 05/11/2012 13:29

My 6 year old DD loves them.

Whitamakafullo · 05/11/2012 13:30

I actually remember being allowed to stay up to watch TOTP with Kylie when I was 4! No harm in it

WoodforTrees · 05/11/2012 13:38

Wow. Thank you MNJury.

Some of these posts have really clarified my reservations - my concern that it is the beginning of the sexualisation of someone who, I believe is too young. However this has also made me see that it is my 'knowledge' of what is to come (crushes/boys etc) that is going me this worry. I think the poster who said DD just wanted to look 'cool, is spot on

She think the songs are quite nice (lyric oblivious) and sees the poster as 'cool'

I see it as age-inappropriate because of the suggestion of sexualisation.

Perhaps of I accept that she is putting it up in innocence, I can get past it.

Still not sure Confused

Someone further up the thread said that the child concerned shouldn't be allowed teen posters (and, through their image and music, 1D manage to make some hymns look raunchy) but "should be allowed to grow up at her own pace."

Surely, her wanting to display this poster means that this IS her own pace?

RubyFakeNails · 05/11/2012 13:48

I think its important you recognise the difference.

One Direction is just showing her like of One Direction. I also still maintain the idea was introduced to her by the magazine and probably just seems a cool thing to do.

Mrsjay · 05/11/2012 14:10

I would let her put up the puppies and kittens posters till she knows who 1 direction is tbh no harm in her having it up though

jellybeans · 05/11/2012 14:28

Wouldn't bother me at all.

cocolepew · 05/11/2012 14:30

Sparky you're a hussy.

I've been singing it all day since I posted about it, it's driving me bonkers.

StuntGirl · 05/11/2012 14:32

I agree with your thought process behind why you don't want her to put the poster up OP.

At 7 I had posters of horses on my walls, I was more like 11 or 12 before I started putting posters of boybands up. And as much as I liked their music it was because I fancied them that I had the posters.

I think at 7 your daughter is probably doing it because she thinks its cool to put posters up, rather than because she fancies the pants off then, but I am with you 100% on why you don't want her to.

McHappyPants2012 · 05/11/2012 14:35

My ds has had a few 'girlfriend' at 6, I would allow him to have the poster

lisaro · 05/11/2012 14:37

I had Donny Osmond up at that age, though TBH it was to wind up my sister who loved David Cassidy.

Mrsjay · 05/11/2012 14:41

Donny osmond was on daybreak this morning I thought Lorraine kelly was going to slide off the sofa Grin i was born in the early 70s to a young mum who adored him I can still remember her playing his records

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 05/11/2012 14:42

Wigglesrock - I grew up with 'a little bit more' as well, I've always sung along to it and yet never thought about it like that!? It just goes to show, it mostly goes over your head well, mine anyway

Tempted to admit to fancying D.O at that age too, but not sure I can take the ribbing

Jakadaal · 05/11/2012 14:49

Whoa is there not a bit of overthinking going on here? a poster of a boy band who most probably half of her friends talk about - especially those with older siblings. Are they in explicit poses? are they making inappropriate gestures? if no then there is no 'sexualisation' going on. Chances are she is just trying to fit in with her peers. By next week her interest will have moved on and she will most probably be back to cute kittens and puppies.

MmeLindor · 05/11/2012 14:51

Maybe it's just a poster. DD used to put the fluffy kittens and dolphin posters up that she found in comics.

Tbh, I think it is simply a reflection of the kind of 'comics' that are available for pre-teens these days. Sadly, the days of girls settling down to read the Bunty are gone. It's all Justin Bloody Bieber and make up tips.

I'd let her but also look for alternative reading material for her.

Mrsjay · 05/11/2012 15:04

Mine put the fluffy bunnies and what not up as well at 7 dd2 still does alongside batman posters, I do think it is a reflection though saw a little girl with a 1D hoodie on last weekend

TomsBentPinky · 05/11/2012 15:09

I wouldn't. Not at 7.

I know its probably purely innocent reasons but I'd be tempted to try and sway her towards ordering a kitten poster off ebay?!

I wouldn't let my 7 year old listen to them either.

But then I guess my kids have to look at my half naked Bane from Batman poster in my kitchen so I'm probably not the best person to ask Confused

StuntGirl · 05/11/2012 15:28

Toms Grin Bane?! I'd probably pick 1D over Bane anyday!

MmeLindor · 05/11/2012 15:29

DD is 10yo btw, and really hates 1D - even though plenty in her class like them.

Can you get her interested in Taylor Swift instead? She has much more positive lyrics, I find.
