Neighbour vacuuming at 07:30!

It's HALF TERM! I don't want waking up at 07:30 (their small child is up and stomping around about 20 mins before, mum only works term time so she should be off for half term). AIBU to ask her to stop?

I don't think YABU OP. I try my best not to make noise before 8.30/9am (although I have a very well sound proofed house so it's very unlikely the neighbours hear anything anyway). It wouldn't bother me hugely if they hoovered occasionally that early, I'm usually up anyway and getting on with my own day, but I'd rather they didn't. But then I have health issues which affect my sleep so it's a bit different. (and incidentally I wouldn't have a clue when half term is going on I'm afraid)

I think there are far too many people crowded into small spaces in this country. The only way for things to run smoothly is for us to be considerate of one another. Noise issues can cause people to have terrible health problems. Just saying 'not my problem' seems, well, pretty unpleasant. Of course you have to get on with your day, and if you're busy and rushed off your feet trying to squeeze chores in, that's different. I'm talking about the whole 'I'll do what I like and don't care how it affects people' attitude. It's shitty.

Inneedofbrandy · 01/11/2012 09:55

I'm sure there's a link to vacuuming early from opening your curtains before 7 "back in the days" my nanas time.

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 01/11/2012 10:39

8 or 9 is the norm...if it's the weekend!

You're rather rude, DolomitesDonkey, I actually have MS! Hmm I'm not going to justify my need for sleep, why should I?

YA NOT BU

Petsinmyputridpudenda Washing machine spinning at 4am! I am Angry on your behalf.

I used to be a night owl until I had DS. Even though he sleeps well now, he has me well trained and I am up 6ish every day. All the early hooverers, engine starters and lawn mower users can feck right off and when they get there, feck off some more.

YANBU, that's EARLY.

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 01/11/2012 11:19

I didn't hear anything this morning. [hsmile]

I hoover every day - no pets here, just messy family, clearly.

It doesn't take that long and I only do downstairs daily - 10 mins max.

The hoovering includes the kitchen floor (easiest way to get it clean tho I mop it 2-3 times per week and as needed - dirty shoes grrrr) - do some of you really only clean yr kitchen floor once a week? ick.

If I miss a hoovering it looks absolutely skanky the next day IMO.

My house is not tidy btw (boxes everywhere after we moved in July!) but it is clean.

I do agree tho noisy activity early or late if you are in a flat is a PITA.

whois · 01/11/2012 11:23

socharlotte country at its knees because people think 8 is early?

I think people's definition of 'early' very much depends on the time they have to be in work! Someone working in a cafe lunchtime to 8pm would think getting up at 8am very early. God dam those lazy fuckers who work non-conventional hours, have the cheek to live close to work or (shock horror) only have themselves to get up and out the house with no ankle biters slowing them down.

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 01/11/2012 11:27

Interesting, but no one on this thread who hoovers early in the morning has mentioned their neighbours and whether it disturbs them. There's 211 posts, do you not even think that you could be waking them up? Confused

^Getting up early definately goes onto my 'weird things to be smug about' list.
Along with 'never having watched Coronation
Street' and 'not knowing what a chicken nugget looks like'^

Word. Also boasting about how clean your house is or how often you change the duvet cover. WTF? Only on Mumsnet.

I hoover every day. Not at 7:30 in the am though.

Lady, is she an Mner?

Ephiny · 01/11/2012 11:50

YABU, 7.30 is not that early, and if you live in a terrace or semi- you have to expect to hear your neighbours occasionally. You and your kids probably make noise that disturbs them sometimes.

If it bothers you that much, you have the options of ear-plugs, getting sound-proofing put in, or moving to a detached house. Well, I guess you could ask her not to do it, but IMO that would be a bit unreasonable.

And people without school-age children generally have no idea whether it's half-term or not. Also, we don't care.

Ephiny · 01/11/2012 11:51

(I don't think I've ever heard my neighbours vacuuming, btw, though we do hear other day-to-day noise. Either they never do Shock or it can't be that loud).

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 12:02

I don't think YABU. A little give and take goes a long way. I would never hoover that early and even at weekends am reluctant to start hoovering before about 10.30 in case the guy upstairs is having a lie on.

SusanneLinder · 01/11/2012 12:10

I hoover at 7.30am/8am. However I live in a mid terrace which is pretty well insulated and in the 12 years I have lived here, I have NEVER heard my neighbours hoover on either side ofc they may be clatty sods and not have hoovered in all that time :o
I may think about it if I was in a flat though. However life has to go one people have different routines and you just need to get on with it.
For the record, my DH is a nurse that works night shift. He sleeps during day, he certainly doesnt expect life to bloody stop and kids not to play cos of his shifts. So someone will be distrubing someone somewhere.

Clary · 01/11/2012 12:14

I am sure I don't distrub my neighbours as our house is detached.

I never hear anything from them.

In our old house which was a semi we now and then heard the baby crying but I never minded that (tho the mum used to apologise - nowt wrong with a baby crying, means they are here!). I doubt if my hoovering disturbed them tbh. But then with the baby and their work they were up as early as us.

I don't boast about the hoovering or the duvet Hmm - somebody asked tho! I don't have my nails done ever and I eat lots of chocolate to inversely boast...

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 01/11/2012 12:44

She's not a mumsnetter.

OP posts:
Meglet · 01/11/2012 12:48

yabu. We can hear everything in our terrace so we all suck it up instead of walking on eggshells. Small houses and paper walls mean you have to make allowances.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 01/11/2012 17:48

I do not disturb my neighbours. Because we only have neighbours on one side and they leave for work at 7:50am.

And saying I Hoover every day is not boasting. It's a fact. I have children, shedding dogs and a cat.
I have to Hoover.

And we are not home til fairly late in the evening so no time to do it then.

That doesn't mean I think everyone should be up at 6am if they don't have to be or Hoover every day.

Tbh I wouldn't do it if I didn't have to.

whathasthecatdonenow · 01/11/2012 18:28

I'm pretty sure that I said that I know I'm not disturbing my neighbours as we all leave for work at the same time, so I reckon they are out of bed by the time I hoover. I've never heard them hoovering, although I do hear plenty of other stuff. I'm the slattern of my family as I only hoover twice a day.

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 01/11/2012 18:48

I hoover once a week! Only the stairs, landing and ds's room though as there's wooden floors everywhere else.

She hoovers upstairs, not downstairs. I can hear the hoover bashing into the skirting boards. Confused
