Neighbour vacuuming at 07:30!

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 31/10/2012 19:30

It's HALF TERM! I don't want waking up at 07:30 (their small child is up and stomping around about 20 mins before, mum only works term time so she should be off for half term). AIBU to ask her to stop?

Well, what would be the socially acceptable times to Hoover, or do other loud housework, then? Yes, 0730 is a bit early, but my rule of thumb would be not before 0700 or after 2200. What say the .Mumsnet jury?

LittleBearPad · 02/11/2012 19:30

8.30 onwards maybe until about the same time in the evening on weekdays. After nine on weekends.
Wholly arbitrary times with little though behind them Grin

LittleBearPad · 02/11/2012 19:30

Thought. Grr

flow4 · 02/11/2012 19:39

My wholly arbitrary times are similar to yours, LittleBear I'd say after 8:30am on week days or 9am at weekends, and before about 9-9:30pm in the evening, whatever the day.
But then, I'm definitely a slattern, and vac only about once a week. Grin Nobody needs to vac every day!

whathasthecatdonenow · 02/11/2012 19:43

flow4, would you want to clean up cat sick each day then? If I don't hoover twice a day, fluffy diabetic cat eats the fur, throws up and then goes hypo. I reckon I need to hoover in the morning and the evening. There are other things I'd rather do with my time.

Arisbottle · 02/11/2012 19:47

I have a cold so have not hoovered today and my house certainly looks the worse for it.

Maybe I have raised a family who just create more mess than other people.

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 02/11/2012 20:03

I'm waiting for Dyson to invent the soundless vacuum cleaner. Grin

LittleBearPad · 02/11/2012 20:08

It won't be any good though

Arisbottle · 02/11/2012 20:17

I agree little bear, dyson are crap when they make a noise!

spoonsspoonsspoons · 02/11/2012 20:25

"but my rule of thumb would be not before 0700 or after 2200"

That's what our council website give for normal waking hours and noise made by normal day to day living can be expected between those times.

Hoovering downstairs because your children have made a mess or because of cat fluff is very different to hoovering upstairs though. Why hoover the bedrooms at 07:30 every day? I think anytime between 08:30 and 10pm is reasonable.

whathasthecatdonenow · 02/11/2012 20:34

Well, my animals aren't restricted to downstairs, so upstairs does need hoovering too.

If it helps, LadyMary, I'm a teacher so I lie-in on half-terms too. However the diabetic cat does have to have his insulin at 7am. Then we all go back to bed. So no hoovering until about 9:30 in school holidays.

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 02/11/2012 20:35

I'm sure there's no pets next door (apart from the little elephant) Grin

I bet you love half term. Smile

BTW, has anyone else noticed that nocturnal 'night owls' are expected to be quiet, and their noise is considered anti-social... But early-birds are considered industrious and their dawn/pre-dawn noise is somehow morally superior acceptable?

TOTALLY agree!

I thought about this thread as I was doing my hoovering at 11pm last night!

I don't hoover the whole house every day, we have a rota and alternate between upstairs and downstairs. Our animals go upstairs , as do the children!

I am often to be found cleaning my bathrooms at 11pm. The glamour of it all!

flow4 · 02/11/2012 21:13

I also allow children and dog upstairs, but I still only vac once a week if that. As I said, I am a slattern Grin.
We have a pile of back-logged dirty washing as big as the bath, too!

I HATE housework, and when I rule the world, I will ban war, and invest the money we save in inventing the self-cleaning house and giving one free to every family Grin.

whathasthecatdonenow · 02/11/2012 22:27

I hate clearing up hoiked up fur balls more than hoovering, so I hoover as a preventative measure. I do come from a family of vacuum obsessives though, so it would be odd to do it less. My mum has 3 hoovers and a carpet sweeper, I feel restrained with just the two hoovers.

My sister is much worse than me - she hoovers at 5:00 am before milking/milk-round, then when she gets back in at about 11, then again after tea. She has no neighbours for over a mile though!

Arisbottle · 02/11/2012 22:31

I have two hoovers, a hand held hoover, one carpet cleaner and two steam cleaners. Blush

Iwillorderthefood · 02/11/2012 22:43

You should all speak to my neighbour who complains that my children make noise whilst I am getting them ready for school and nursery. 7.30 is get dressed time and apparently we should be creeping around at this time in case they don't get their beauty sleep. Please see comment about it being tiring keeping young children quiet.

I would probably not Hoover at 7.30 am however. Only since I am too busy trying to sort things out. Maybe your neighbour is using the only time she has to get things done before doing things with dc?

LadyMaryCreepyCrawley · 02/11/2012 22:45

I'd like to think so, but the little elephant is an early riser, so I can hear her stomping around before her mum gets the hoover out. I think they are a family of early birds.

ArthurShappey · 02/11/2012 22:46

Perhaps you should go to bed now, then you won't be so tired in the morning?

Confused I have MS, I'll be tired anyway. I've had my years of getting up early, as Maryz says, it's half term so I can stay up late to drink Wine and celebrate that ds isn't going to wake at 5am Grin
