AIBU to feel that not all 4x4 owners buy them for swanking about in !

Some of us do our research before making a purchase and the vehicle we buy is the one which suits our needs.

So can those who make snap judgements otherwise (yes, certain school gate mums, I do mean you and a fair few MN'ers too) go away and consider why they feel the need to criticise someone else's carefully thought through decision/choice so instantly without considering the possible factors in arriving at that choice.

Just because some people get a kick out of the admiration/envy that they can garner from showing off any lovely or expensive new clothes/handbag/car/jewellery or talking about their upcoming holiday or lounge redecoration, new furniture etc etc, don't assume that all people are like that because it smacks of judging others by the way you personally would act and might therefore actually reflect badly on you.

I honestly had no idea when I got the car some while back how much it would affect the way some acquaintances treat me.

Except now but that is because I have chosen to retaliate against the nastiness and play along. So tedious, there must be more interesting things to do than hate people.

Jusfloatingby · 31/10/2012 21:46

Bemused by the amount of posters saying 'what business is it of any one else's what I drive? You're just jealous and resent people who have worked hard and are now comfortably off' when so many other posters have clearly stated the valid reasons they find 4x4s annoying ie
Getting in other people's way on narrow suburban roads
Blocking people's views when trying to exit parking spaces
Posing a bigger danger than other cars in collisions

I have not seen one poster put up a valid defence against these points.

Procrasstinator · 31/10/2012 21:55

there are plenty of very good reasons for disapproving of 4x4s. IMO if you choose to own a 4x4 in a city, then you have made a selfish decision. IMO people who act in such a selfish way with little social/environmental conscience, are wankers

why do you care if i think you are a wanker?

one lone voice, hardly amounts to bullying

I find the ownership of 4x4s by people in cities who don't need them, massively offensive. I don't care how much they cost or how much money you have.

IMO opposing 4x4s is a valid waste of time

you had comments deleted on this thread theo Confused

Jusfloatingby · 31/10/2012 22:01

Yes you did Theo - a particularly nasty and personal attack on an individual poster.

But what about all the other posters who just go 'what business is it of anyone's what I drive' when people have clearly stated why it is 'their business'. That's what I can't understand. It's as if two parallel discussions are going on here.

But you answered a post where I asked that question???

naturalbaby · 31/10/2012 22:15

I find the bmw x6 offensive
and various other silly cars that are not driven for the purpose they were built for.

If we all kept to our own little patch of tarmac and didn't drive into anything/anyone then what would be the problem?

I'm sure there was peace and loving on the last 4x4 thread I was on.

Thanks anyone?

i grew up and spent most of my life in villlages; i would question how many people really need 4x4s

but it is more persuasive; the dangers of parking/obstructing are less and pedestrian hazard less etc

i also take issue with townies taking 4x4s out in treachorous conditions; they aint invincible

Jusfloatingby · 31/10/2012 22:52

Let's face it. For many people 4x4s have just become the latest fashionable 'must have' and those people will ignore any annoyance or risk or inconvenience they're causing anyone else because 'they're worth it'.
Personally I think people driving these around the suburbs look as inappropriate as someone walking across a field in six inch heels and a cocktail dress.

If people want to look like knobs fine, that's their decision. But if, in the process, they're causing me inconvenience then I am perfectly entitled to comment.

We quite often use one, it belongs to DPs company and he has to use it for a few days so brings it home, or we borrow it to go to Ikea or the tip. Everyone does look at you like you are an arsehole. We had filthy looks from all our previous neighbours... They were all strangely quite happy to be towed out the snow though Grin

Jusfloatingby · 31/10/2012 22:58

Oh, but it does matter to me if I can't see when exiting a car parking space. You see I might crash into someone or hit a small child or something. To me that is actually more important than the kind of car I drive.

catinwitchyboots · 31/10/2012 22:58

Fuck me sideways. I wasn't going to seriously enter this debate because it's shit and flawed.

But people who are slating 4x4s in any circumstance?

Try living 2 miles from the nearest shop - when your village floods so badly that people canoe down your lane. And it also suffers with treacherous snow and ice. And you have toddlers. And possibly elderly parents that stay regularly???

Good luck in your fucking smart cars Angry

brandysoakedbitch · 31/10/2012 23:00

I have a minging old Landy. I wear sunglasses when I drive it, I certainly swank about and I do spit at the little people as I go.

catinwitchyboots · 31/10/2012 23:00

Oh - and my elderly parents live on a hill in the suburbs of London. There was no way they could have got to a shop for days when the snow hit badly a couple of years ago - unless I had managed to get there in my 4x4.

So maybe some 'townies' do them too!

brrbrrwinteriscoming · 31/10/2012 23:01

EuroShagmore phew! you can be my friend, it is a shooting animals thing. i work in customer services so i would LOVE a gun! [hgrin]

threesocksonathreeleggedwitch · 31/10/2012 23:02

do not judge.
I did I used to take the piss out of drivers of these things until.....
it snowed, dd(disabled wheelchair user) got stuck miles away at respite....
school bus company would not go and get her.
I couldn't as ....well if the roads are that bad....
she was stuck.
I rang children's disability ss.
a really nice man with a 4x4 came and picked dh up and went and got her home.
I do not take the piss now

catinwitchyboots · 31/10/2012 23:03

You just keep putting your DCs in a tuba can for the school run - and patting yourselves on the back for you frugality and teeny tiny carbon footprint.

I'm all right Jack, driving my DCs round in my safe as houses car. I'll still sleep well Ta.

Jusfloatingby · 31/10/2012 23:04

But that's the kind of thing they're meant to be used for threesocks.

catinwitchyboots · 31/10/2012 23:06

Tuba can? Arf Grin

Tuna can even....

catinwitchyboots · 31/10/2012 23:07

Good grief I've never been so frothy. I better have another Valium Wink
