to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

Well quite math.

I must say I find this idea that x, y or z is an unacceptable thing to spend ones cash on, highly suspect.

Who decides the contents of these lists? The middle class nouveau pauvre?

And precisely what should we expensive handbag touting, 4x4 driving, school fee paying, electric gate opening peeps be spending out hard earned lolly on instead Grin?

Jins · 01/11/2012 13:35

I can't see through those stupid sunscreen things either. Sad

GraceOfWrath · 01/11/2012 13:43

I live on a narrow (in parts) lane. From experience the least considerate drivers are in 4x4s and vans.
I do think that some types are just a massive show off, dh hates them. The safety factor though, I do understand, we've always based our car choice on safety for us and the dc and if dh didn't hate them so much I would be tempted to get to one for that reason alone.

I do think this forum is probably the wrong place to have chosen to take the piss out of 4 x4s and expect a sympathetic ear...

RinderThrillerNight · 01/11/2012 14:01

jus, I really do mean this in the nicest possible way. I joked about it yesterday, that you really aren't a shit driver (which misfired as joking can't be my strongest point as it went over your head). But, many people have responded to your assertions on this thread that 4x4s cause you difficulties on the road, that you are either a 'shit driver' (not my words) or that you need to improve your driving. After reading your subsequent posts that you don't like 4x4s pretty much for the sole reason that they make your life more difficult in car parks, I really do think you need to take responsibility for your driving ability and confidence on the road as these seem to be a big issue for you.

There are some fantastic courses out there that will help you drive assertively and with confidence, to look and think ahead and read the road. You might find that if you complete such a course obstacles like hedges, vans and 4x4s will no longer cause you such angst. Regardless of why an obstacle is there, you need to understand how to drive according to the conditions. So, if you find yourself parked next to an emergency van in the car park, or a hedge, or a 4x4, you need to know how to reverse so that no injury or harm is caused to anyone. At the moment it would seem from what you have said that if a 4x4 is there then it's a problem, but if it was a big white van it's not. I just don't get that...either you can successfully negotiate reversing out next to a large vehicle safely or you can't. If you can't then quite frankly you shouldn't be on the road. Or you should reverse into the space so you can drive straight out (yes, I know, that argument has already been done to death).

Btw, I haven't really put my arguments for 4x4s forward on this thread. I think in my very first post I stated that I have no wish or need to justify my reasons for having my 4x4. It is far more fun to show your arguments to be full of holes and that you put blame on others where you should take responsibility for your own lack of skills.

pugsandseals · 01/11/2012 14:01

Who says 4x4's are anymore expensive than any other type of car? Mine cost less than a Ford Focus, but people would rather judge others than know the facts. I also get 50mpg by the way, which beats my little old estate by loads!

Let people buy what they want. I don't judge anybody else on their car choice!

prudencesmom · 01/11/2012 14:04

Landys,Rangies OMG cringe, please tell me some people dont actually utter these words?! Shock
Personally I cannot stand anything to do with the countryside, I detest seeing all these farm accessories in town. It hurts my eyes.
Its really funny reading all the detailed accounts of people trying to justify their 4x4s, they are all just stealth wealth boasts Confused
wordfactory spend your millions how you wish no one cares but you have completely missed the point.
When you have a 4x4 you are in the TRIBE. It means you buy into this fantasy lifestyle, which is totally crass. Hunter wellies, Boden etc
Thank goodness for this thread so all the TRIBE people can finally see how ridiculous they look to everyone!!!
The game is up, we see through you..... and we certainly dont envy you!!!!

mathanxiety · 01/11/2012 14:08

But I thought one of the problems was that no-one could see through 'us' Confused

Binkyridesagain · 01/11/2012 14:08

I don't know what your seeing but I don't live a fantasy lifestyle of hunters Wellies and boden, and my 17 year old landy Ivan never be described as a display of wealth.

You've cheered me up though

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 14:08

Thanks Rinder but I am a perfectly assertive and skilled driver well able to drive around a city, push my way into heavy traffic etc etc. That doesn't mean I don't find it a bloody nuisance when there's a big SUV plonked beside me in a crowded car park with cars coming in both directions, people wheeling trollies, kids running ahead of their parents etc etc and it takes me ages to slowly reverse out so I don't hit anyone. I am not 'nervous' around them I just think they're annoying, particularly so when I know some of them have just been bought by silly show offs who want to make some kind of a statement by the car they drive and couldn't care less if they're inconvenient for other people.

Nice attempt at a patronising post, though.

pongysticks · 01/11/2012 14:09

wow - been away and just found this one!! My all time favourite subject, has OP been back on?

As a member of the 4x4 club we go offroading and spend weekends clearing by ways for the horse owners, dog walkers and ramblers as well as the dirt bike riders and 4x4 drivers, over 50 owners turned up at the last meet to give our time to clear the ways.

We have owned various landies over the years and have found the owners are the nicest bunch of people we know.

When it snows my DH goes out to help tow people out of trouble, he moved a lorry last year off a junction making way for hundreds of people and enabled them to get home in he heavy snow.

We do have money DH isn't middle class he's upper class with family money, and he has better manners than the OP who has a totally disgusting judgemental attitude. We also tow a speed boat with the landies, just to get up OP's nose some more.

I use the landie for the school runs, for work for taking children too and from partys so shoot me, it even has roof bars, tow bars, spot lights the works.

Maybe the posters sighting the environmental twaddle should read some "dust to dust" reports on land rovers against other deemed friendly cars.

Rant over, off to wash my landie as I never realised clean ones were more annoying!

pongysticks · 01/11/2012 14:10

prudencesmom the landies reference is for you!

WileyRoadRunner · 01/11/2012 14:10

Where's Joan gone?

It isn't half as much fun without her. Or has she renamed herself prudencesmum?

RinderThrillerNight · 01/11/2012 14:11

Math Grin

RinderThrillerNight · 01/11/2012 14:13

Oh, please tell me what new speak in the TRIBE is? I can't be in the TRIBE as I have no clue what you are talking about. Perhaps you are in the TRIBE who gives a shit about wank speak like that prudence?

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 14:14

Well said Prudence. People trundling around the place in big tanks built for driving in the outback or across fields look ridiculous. I now realise that a lot of them sound absolutely ridiculous as well.

Anyway, have to collect a child from school (in my toyota corolla). Hope my careful driving doesn't get in the way of all those knobs busy people negotiating their way through snow with their boot filled with loads of stuff and their 8 kids strapped into the back.

RinderThrillerNight · 01/11/2012 14:18

You're terribly arrogant Jus. There's always room for improvement you know. To think there's not could be a fatal flaw (literally).

You also seem intent to take offence when none was meant. You did that with me yesterday and you have done it today. I had no wish to patronise you. I just thought you could do with some advice. Sometimes it does good to listen to others rather than just repeating BLAH BLAH BLAH with your eyes and ears shut to everything else around you.

The road is full of different users. There may well be cars full of busy people with car boots full of stuff and lots of children in their car. So long as their car is legal and they are driving it legally, they have just as much right to be there as you have.

pongysticks · 01/11/2012 14:19

Jusfloatingby I hope that one day you don't need rescuing from floods, snow or the mountains. I'd love to see you stamp your feet and refuse to get in a 4x4.

WileyRoadRunner · 01/11/2012 14:21

I'm disappointed Jus for some reason I was adamant you would have a Honda Jazz.

prudencesmom · 01/11/2012 14:21

You all protest waaaay too much TRIBE people!!

How defensive you all are Grin
I really dont care what you do with your muckmobiles.
I told you I detest country life in all its forms so please spare me the details.

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 01/11/2012 14:22

prudencesmom It is not often I am aghast, but I am now.

MrsKeithRichards · 01/11/2012 14:22

Prudence, I can categorically assure you our 2 decade old landrovers are not a wealth display.

One cost less than £500. The other is ours through various trades dh has done with other off road types over the years.

So do one aye?

MrsKeithRichards · 01/11/2012 14:24

Pssst... We call them landies, discos, ranges, Suzy the series, Neville the 90...

Grin
RinderThrillerNight · 01/11/2012 14:25

Is that in the 'twat' column Exit?

Binkyridesagain · 01/11/2012 14:27

Why have I got Frankie goes to Hollywood - two tribes going round in my head?

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 01/11/2012 14:28

No, no, I am in the twat column and believe me, prudence would not want to be anywhere near me.
