to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

In my merc everything blocks my view when reversing out of a space. So I do it SLOWLY. If you really think you can't drive safely round a car park, regardless of what is parked next to you, you really have no business driving.

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 12:34

I do drive safely Net. But I don't have xray vision and have the sense to realise that and to be wary of things that are obstructing my view.

And if your merc means you can see nothing when reversing out of a space it is you who have no business driving in car parks.

pugsandseals · 01/11/2012 12:44

I drive a 4x4 because I need to fit loads of stuff in it for my job. I drive 500 miles per week for work & need the seat height so I don't do my back in like I frequently used to do in my old little Peugeot! I love my car, I drive safely but in a way which gets me around without wasting time. I hate the drivers of little Micras that drive at 30mph regardless of the speed limit being 40 or 60 - they make me late, generally can't park & are often distracted by the child they forgot to strap in tightly enough who is now in full tantrum made in the back. If you can't drive safely at speed, get off the road some of us have real need to use it!

(feel better now) By the way, my car uses less fuel than the average ford fiesta & takes up way less room in the car than your average estate, so get off your high horse & learn to drive

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 12:47

If you can't drive at speed get off the road

Nice Shock

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 01/11/2012 12:49

Gosh is this still going?

I never knew everyone thought I was a twat because I drive a 4x4 with my own number plate.

Woozley · 01/11/2012 12:50

The visibility is terrible in some of them. No wonder they need parking sensors.

Thanks Everlong

pugsandseals · 01/11/2012 12:59

Sorry, but I spend far too much of my working week at 25 in a 40 or 60 limit stuck behind the mum struggling to keep her car in a straight line while shouting at her toddler to be kind about this! These ladies should be made to take their driving test in a big car to build their confidence

wordfactory · 01/11/2012 13:05

Do 4x4s really cause a visibility issue? Really?

BlueberryHill · 01/11/2012 13:10

Sometimes large cars / 4x4 can block or restrict views, but so can hedges, vans, lorries, houses, small cars stopped on the road or on at a junction. As a driver it is my responsibility to drive accordingly, usually that means advancing / reversing slowly or waiting until my visibility improves depending on the situation. It is part of every day driving surely.

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 13:10

Well for a start pugs, not everyone can afford 'big cars'. Also, the roads are there for everyone not just business people. And there are lots of people who make the roads unsafe including people tailgating, ducking and diving between lanes, overtaking dangerously, running red lights etc etc etc Mums driving slowly because their toddler is distracting them are hardly the worst people on the road. Also, the speed limit is the maximum you can go at not the minimum. Not saying it isn't frustrating sometimes when someone is driving very slowly in front of you, but they are not breaking any laws or driving dangerously.

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 13:11

Seriously amused at the number of 4x4 drivers desperately insisting that they don't cause any obstruction of people's views.

I test drove a Range Rover Sport the other week and it was a wonderful machine to drive. It made me feel all smiley Grin

Not getting one though, they do 16 mpg, there's no way I'd want to feed one.

wordfactory · 01/11/2012 13:18

But just I don't just drive a 4x4. I also drive a very low slung sports car. We have alwso in the recent past had a Mini.

I never expereinced any difficulties with visibility in those cars Confused.

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 13:18

Blue Just because other necessary things sometimes block our view does not mean that people who unnecessarily (and I stress 'unnecessarily') drive big juggernauts around the place are not a bloody nuisance that drive other road users mad

WileyRoadRunner · 01/11/2012 13:18

justfloating the 4x4 drivers are just as amused that the only arguments you seem to be able to put forward not to have a 4x4 is that they apparently "restrict" your view and damage the environment. Especially as it keeps being said that these threads are "full of 4x4 owners desperately trying to justify" having one.

The reasons for having one have been a lot more sensible than those given not too.

Meh. It sounds like you shouldn't be on the road if you are not confident enough to drive near a 4x4.

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 13:19

I wasn't talking about you word.

wordfactory · 01/11/2012 13:20

But what would be an unneccessary drive in a 4x4?

Are you saying 4x4 drivers should have another car, one that doesn't cause apparent visibility problems?

Jusfloatingby · 01/11/2012 13:21

Wiley

Where did I mention the environment?? And people who dismiss the fact that 4x4s make it difficult for other drivers to progres safely as a trivial argument and not worthy it itself to question the unnecessary use of these vehicles really underline the reason why so many people stereotype 4x4 drivers.

Jins · 01/11/2012 13:21

I'm sat in a car park between a jeep Cherokee and a golf. I have fabulous visibility through the jeeps windows but my vision is obscured by the hatchback of the golf

I was going to creep out of the space anyway

BlueberryHill · 01/11/2012 13:27

Just, you're right, which is why I'm taking my hedge trimmer to a really unneccessary hedge just around the corner.

I drive a convertible, the visibility out of the back isn't great, apart from when the roof is down when its brilliant.

mathanxiety · 01/11/2012 13:28

Why is an old, farm-type, muddy, etc. RR acceptable where a newer, clean one isn't? Surely the newer one is more likely to be more fuel efficient, blah blah....

Preferring the old and battered looking ones is a good example of British snobbery. Those old muddy ones were once new, clean, etc., after all...

BlueberryHill · 01/11/2012 13:28

Actually tinted windows obstruct my view, cannot see through the car. Maybe people with tinted windows are entitled?
