standing in a car parking space

Hi all, i was a member here ages and ages ago and haven't got a clue what my details were so had to join again. Just wanted a rant and a bit of tlc and some input really.
Anyway, we were out today. Had to pop into boots and tesco for some last minute urgent stuff, nappies, milk, etc. The car park was pretty full and then a space suddenly became available. So, I got out of the car and stood there whilst my sister tried to reverse in. A car was righ behind her so she had to wait for him to reverse too. All the while Im stood there. Then before she has a chance to reverse in, the driver from the other side drives straight in, knowing full well that I'm stood there and just continues driving into me. Edging forward even though I'm there. I stood in shock and was shoved a lttle but he still continued until I was out of the way. Now, I'm asian and he was a white guy with his mrs - probably middle aged. He just got out of the car and went to the shop. His mrs just sat there and then piped up 'well you can't really stand there in a spot'. I said my sister's right behind you.
I think I was in shock more than anything, the mood I'm in now I could've battered him. Argghhhh! Now, I bet that he would't have done that if it was a strapping 6 foot guy.
I don't know bt U feel really upset. I've never really experienced racism before. Never really. And then this. And honestly, I started to think 'all white people are the same', until i pulled myself together and started to rationalise it. Still upset by it and bloody annoyed wth myself for not having caused a scene there and then or called the police. After all, driving into someone and actually pushing me.
What would you have done? Think?

Just drive in and reverse out!

Cars are more manouverable in reverse so it's easier to park. Also it is better to do your manouvering when the engine is warm as it causes less wear and tear than if you had to manouver out of the space (when the engine is cold)

In other news: OP YABVVVU for all of the reasons already given.

MidniteScribbler · 22/10/2012 00:38

I'm sure the OP would be very upset if we tried to mention the stereotype of asians not being very good drivers. After all, she did need to guide her sister to reverse so she didn't hit anything. Hmm

This could only have been better if it had been a P&C space and the offending driver didn't have a child with him.

SmellyFartado · 22/10/2012 10:39

Carly, you were being completely unreasonable - firstly to have gotten out of the car to stand holding a parking space in a busy car park and secondly to have made the ridiculous race statement you did in your original post. Even if this was just a fleeting thought, it was and is incredibly offensive.

You then have the audacity to post:

Wow, the race thing really gets you ladies going hu? I think the ones going on with the race thing really need to get a grip. Wow, you do labour a point hu?

Imagine, if you will, that the tables are turned and someone posts a thread saying 'AIBU to have forced someone standing in a car parking space to move so I can park my car....I've never been racist before but I started to think all Asian people are the same until I pulled myself together and started to rationalise it...'

Can you see how offensive this is? Well I have paraphrased what you have originally posted so this is why posters including myself are understandably angry at your post.

I love your username! ^

Thanks Ghost

I'm just amazed anyone would drop casual references to racism, being racist, or accusations of racism into a post on the internet. Talk about asking for trouble! Are you really surprised the responses to your post have centered mainly on the racism factor OP? It's a bit more of an important subject than car park etiquette.

Racism is one of those subjects that needs to be bought up with a bit of thought. Not slipped in with a ramble about parking.

Shamelessly hijacking this thread as the OP has changed her mind and agreed she was BU :)

How do those of you who reverse into a parking space unload shopping from the trolley? Would have thought it was quite very difficult to struggle between the cars to reach the back?

I always drive into a space because it's then very simple to unload and put my shopping straight into the boot.

CackleMeIAmYours · 22/10/2012 12:10

I have both front and rear 'boots' (mid-engined car)

digerd · 22/10/2012 12:13

I know this one !!! It has nothing to do with being Asian, it's because you are not a MAN. He wouldn't have done it to another man. But what he did was OTT and dangerous, threatening behaviour using a lethal weapon - a car . I see nothing wrong if you and sis were there first. But if he was there before you and waiting on the other side to move forwards into it and you didn't realise that, then anyone would be annoyed. As long as someone is waiting in line, then I see no problem in passenger getting out to ensure nobody pinches the space.

digerd · 22/10/2012 12:17

TO PENDEEN Oh yes, quite right. Didn't think of that. And how was that managed, to drive forwards and then reverse into parking space - that is very odd.

Idocrazythings · 22/10/2012 13:37

Oh OP; I can see where you're coming from with your very misguided comments, and that you don't really mean them to sound how they are coming across, but I don't think you can dig yourself out of this hole with a spoon! Best to give up trying! Grin

cumfy · 22/10/2012 14:02

Sounds like a straightforward case of assault to me.
If he slowly and deliberately drove at you without contact that's still assault.
Ask if store have CCTV; they should keep it for a month.
Did you get the registration ?

Jusfloatingby · 22/10/2012 15:48

I agree with cumfy. I would report this dangerous idiot.

By the way, I didn't take it that the OP was saying 'all white people are the same'. She said she thought it in a moment of shock and then rationalised.
