to think farting in class doesn't warrant detention?

DS2 is year 7 and today one of his friend's got detention for letting rip in class. This dc is a really good kid, polite and popular. DS2 says he's never disruptive it just came out, he didn't do it for attention.

I think it's so sad. What if the boy has a stomach bug coming on? Or IBS? There could be any manner of reasons why this happened. Surely telling him to go to the bathroom or even a bit of shouting to calm the class would've been enough? I imagine there would be lots of sniggering?

The teacher's well known for being ultra strict.

Tbh I can't even write his scrawl that he puts in ds2's book? I'd mention it to him if I didn't think it'd backfire on ds2. DS2 has (possible) Aspergers, he's under diagnosis, so I don't want to rock the boat. He's very sensitive and could end up in tears if he's told off.

So AIBU or do you think the teacher is right?

There are children who deliberately fart to cause disruption, I have set a detention for doing so. Of course no MNer child would ever do such a thing.

Without wanting to rock the boat here I would think you'd have had to be there to make a judgement.

I find that telling those who deliberately fart that I'll have to contact home as I am concerned about their digestive health usually results in improvement in the smell of the classroom.

I also once had an interesting parental consultation with a mortified parent about the farting competitions her son was engaging in.

Not saying this boy was guilty of doing the same thing, of course.

I have once set detention for farting in class, but it was obviously being done purely to cause disruption. I wouldn't set a detention for one accidental fart because I would be in detention a lot

IMO farting on purpose seems to be a skill that only the male of the species has.

I have also phoned a parent about their son farting with intent. She confirmed that he often did it at home as well.

My persistent disrupter was a girl.

Poor boy, i get really bad stomach cramp if i try to hold them in. I always wish i just had the courage to let rip and be like 'yeah...and...'

Ooh, sooty, maybe the next disruptive farter will be a girl then. Two years ago I had a Year 11 class with the four most disruptive boys in separate corners of the room. They had a competition going: one would fart and the first of the others to smell it would raise his hand, then it would be his turn to fart. Could have knocked me down with a feather when one of them got an A*.

He was actually not only a pupil but also a son of a friend . He was known for farting when being asked to help around the house, explain himself, start his class work. I am sure Mum would have said if it was a medical issue.

I'm heartend that kids still fart in class. It's reassuring to know that life hasn't changed that much since I was a kid.

Blimey mine would have to do a lot more than fart to get out of a chore. Not that they get many tbh.
