I've just seen an ad for a steam mop, which shows a woman washing the kitchen floor with it while a baby is sitting on the floor a couple of feet away. This is while the voice over intones "just water, and no harsh chemicals!", so is presumably meant to make us associate it with child safety.

But presumably if you used scalding hot steam to clean your floor, all it would take is for the baby to reach towards the mop and get a pretty nasty injury? I've scalded myself once trying to steam iron clothes with a similar gadget, and it bloody hurt. I bet the instructions say something about keeping it away from children, but the advertising doesn't give this impression.

A bit boring, I know, but WTF?

I hadn't noticed the baby. I just WANT ONE.

I managed to use my karcher last weekend - and it was great but with one BIG exception. I read all the multifarious warnings about what not to do with it but in the heat of battle (with the dirt) I still found myself using natural cleaning movements and coming close to a scald. That floor steam mop in the adverts looks different but I'd earnestly recommend that anyone using a more hand held device wears some sort of glove protection at least (not sure which ones would be best, just so that they could be whipped off quickly.)

My toddler is currently coated in a sticky film from raiding his sisters sweets at the school disco. Maybe I can steam clean him...

If I got my teenager to stand back a little bit and sort of aimed...?

I've seen girls iron the front of the school shirts they were wearing with their hair straighteners before, so I suppose you shouldn't underestimate people's stupidity.

With steam, the problem is that you're used to cleaning with things that don't emit danger. Next time you're scrubbing out a floor or going at a kitchen shelf or something, just stop and work out how often your hands have either come near to each other or near to other things/parts of your body. That's the danger with steam. Just forgetting.

My friend used to iron her hair every morning with an actual iron. It was bizarre and yet strangely talented.

I remember my sister getting me to iron her hair with the iron, on the ironing board. Now that was stupid. Especially as I am known to be immensly clumsy.

In spite of the fact that I never clean the floors (spoilt. Have a cleaner) so it would not save me any time at all.

I spotted an all singing, all dancing one whilst channel surfing in the middle of the night. I really, really, badly want one, it cleaned everything.

I laughed at the "kills 99.9% of bacteria" claim which says in small writing underneath about having to hold the steam cleaner in position for at least 15 seconds to achieve this. That's a long time if you've got a big kitchen!
