to think the advert for the steam mop is pretty irresponsible?

I've just seen an ad for a steam mop, which shows a woman washing the kitchen floor with it while a baby is sitting on the floor a couple of feet away. This is while the voice over intones "just water, and no harsh chemicals!", so is presumably meant to make us associate it with child safety.

But presumably if you used scalding hot steam to clean your floor, all it would take is for the baby to reach towards the mop and get a pretty nasty injury? I've scalded myself once trying to steam iron clothes with a similar gadget, and it bloody hurt. I bet the instructions say something about keeping it away from children, but the advertising doesn't give this impression.

A bit boring, I know, but WTF?

You don't want the H2O X5, not according to the one-star reviews on Amazon.

(But if you do, it's on sale at £59.99 elsewhere. Wink )

KenLeeeeeee · 18/10/2012 19:57

I've borrowed MIL's X5 H2O superduper jazz hands steam mop. I'm half terrified and half enthralled by it. I haven't taken it out of its box yet (I need DH around in case it all goes horribly wrong and I end up injuring myself!) but I can't wait. Need to decide which bit of the house gets steamed first!

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 18/10/2012 19:58

Stratters I hate to tell you but on Amazon there is a page for the X5, with 51 5 reviews, and 48 1 reviews. So it can't be that good.

ScarahStratton · 18/10/2012 20:00

Amazon >>>

This hankering is reaching fetish proportions, it needs cutting down to size. Confused

KenLeeee get a move on, you are the answer to all my steam mop prayers.

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 18/10/2012 20:01

Yes I'm on my phone. It came up with none :(

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 18/10/2012 20:02

Be careful of the handle, KenLeeee, it's a bit flimsy. And the cable is too short. And it's too heavy, and doesn't make blackened grout shine...

Hair straighteners as an iron, what a brilliant idea!

Great for when I am running late, just chuck my suit jacket on and straighten the bits of my blouse that show :o

UltraBOF · 18/10/2012 20:11

Another thing about these steam mops- don't they make your wallpaper come off?

OP posts:
Bogeyface · 18/10/2012 20:12

Depends if you are mopping the wallpaper I suppose.

ScarahStratton · 18/10/2012 20:18

Search again Cunny, this time click 'Refine' at the top left, then go down to Category and select 'All'.

Bet you're searching for a steam mop in shoes or something. Grin

itsatrap · 18/10/2012 20:19

Is that the same advert where she smashes a glass on the floor and then cleans it WITH STEAM?? Amazing!

MainlyMaynie · 18/10/2012 20:19

I love my steam mop and it's a cheap Hyundai. It's pretty bloody obvious you shouldn't steam near a baby, stupid to have it in the advert.

UltraBOF · 18/10/2012 20:23

At last! Maynie- a sensible woman who agrees with my dull OP!

How about the one where the baby is crawling on the kitchen counter with no adult in sight and it is "safe" because they used Dettol spray... Hmm

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 18/10/2012 20:37

Oh, they're there now Confused
