To think boys should have short hair?

Why would you want your little boy to have long hair?

Seriously, every time i watch Eastenders and Sharons kid comes on all i can think is "you need a haircut"

My son did make up his own mind though at 3/4.

I asked him if he wanted it cut before he started school. He didn't.

When he'd started school I asked him if he wanted it cut. He didn't.

I asked him if he wanted it cut before he started secondary school. He didn't.

He's only ever had compliments about his hair.

Edofthe13prams · 18/10/2012 10:12

Look, you can think what you like and a few people might agree with you.

But what are you going to do about it? Do you want to convince us all you're right? That isn't going to happen.

It's not really worth your child worrying about, now is it?

Oh and about those shoes you're wearing...

ginhag · 18/10/2012 10:13

OP (aka The Hair Police)

IDGAFIYABUON.

And I haven't done that for ages

Edofthe13prams · 18/10/2012 10:14

I don't know what happened there. I meant to say, it's not worth your WHILE worrying about it.

MeFour · 18/10/2012 10:16

I have no problem with long hair on boys but since it became more fashionable I do see more that need their hair cut because the long hair just doesn't suit them.
Similarly I also see boys with grade 1 or 2 who could do with a bit of length to make the look better.

My ds1 has shorter hair than ds2, it's what suits them and their hair types.

Edofthe13prams · 18/10/2012 10:21

Is it just me or does anyone else never really THINK about other people's children's hair??

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 18/10/2012 10:22

I don't particularly like long hair on little boys but to say should or shouldn't is BU I'm afraid.

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 10:27

Ed I do notice if other people's children hair is particularly striking or beautiful. But in general I don't notice or have an opinion.

But if you have a child with big auburn curls, I will be looking. And I will be envious!

tiddleypompom · 18/10/2012 10:33

It appears that no one here really cares what you think op - YABU and rather judgemental. How sad to think children of such a young age could be thought of as 'ridiculous' because their appearance doesn't fit in with a tired old gender prescription.

HeinousHecate · 18/10/2012 10:41

It's not just you, Ed. I don't give a shit about other people's hair.

BupcakesAndHaunting · 18/10/2012 10:44

Sharon's son is gorgeous. He reminds me of my own DS, hair and all.

What hair has your DS got, OP? One of those lovely grade 2 cuts that are so short you can't tell the colour of the hair?

ShutTheFrontDoor · 18/10/2012 10:49

Eastenders is for thickos.
Boys with short hair look like thugs.
Hope that helps .

RandomUsername · 18/10/2012 10:52

Bupcakes my sons hair is short round the sides and a bit longer on top, and yes of course you can see what colour he is, he's not a skinhead

BupcakesAndHaunting · 18/10/2012 10:53

Sorry are you the OP, Random? Because that's who I was asking. Confused

valiumredhead · 18/10/2012 10:53

Sharon's boy has just had about 4 inches chopped off his hair.

I don't care about other people's hair tbh...

RandomUsername · 18/10/2012 10:57

Haha sorry wasnt reading just flicking through, saw a comment about boys with short hair and not knowing the hair colour

Apologies

zzzexhaustedzzz · 18/10/2012 10:57

YABU
And I can't believe I even bothered to reply.

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 18/10/2012 10:59

TonyMontanasGun - My 20mo literally lays my hair over his head and says "my want long hair". He sees older DC's I the street with surfer style longer length hair and points and shouts "me like dat hair. My wannit".

He pulls his hair and shouts "My wants LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG hair!!!!"

Are you saying that what he is saying isn't him expressing his own opinion about how he would like his hair?

Maybe I just have very opinionated DC's, but all 4 of them have known by 2yo how they personally want their hair. And what clothes they like and don't like. And favourite colours and favourite foods, and things they won't wear, things they won't eat.

All 3 of my DS's have hair of differing lengths. One has a traditional short back and sides, but ever so slightly longer at the top, so that he can spike it, one has a haircut that is very similar to Justin Bieber's, and the youngest currently has a sprinkling of ginger fluff, but obviously wants to grow it longer.

How would you like it, OP, if someone insisted that you, say, bleached your hair blonde, because all women have to have blonde hair? Well this is no different.

As I said before, their head, their choice!

SamuelWestsMistress · 18/10/2012 11:00

My boys have long hair just like Denny from Eastenders and I love it. (Although DS2 has my hair so it's a little thin and wispy!!)

SIL's DS2 has (same age as my DS2) has the most beautiful hair I have ever known on a child! She wasn't one for long hair on boys either but his has grown into the most perfect head of thick bright blonde curly head of glorious hair, she can't stand the thought of chopping them off yet.

YABU.

TonyMontanasGun · 18/10/2012 11:07

Both my boys have short hair, no idea how youd describe the style.

And for the record of course little boys dont want their hair cut, they dont want to sit still and have scissors near their head. My son doesnt want to stand and wash his face/brush teeth, so should i let him not bother doing it?

OP posts:
minouminou · 18/10/2012 11:17

That's not a valid comparison - we clean hands, face and teeth to avoid health complaints.

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 11:21

Tony you truly are a loon! Grin

I'd love a moment inside your head to try and understand exactly why this is such an issue for you.

The fact is that hair length fashions/preferences change.

It's not a universal truth or a natural law that boys should have short hair.

It's a Western convention that some people accept because they either like it; or think it is 'right'; or, for some reason, haven't thought about it long enough to form an opinion, they just do it; or because it suits the child.

However, equally some people reject it because they don't like it; don't think it's 'right'; or have thought about it have chosen to reject that convention; or because it suits the child.

There are lots of reasons why parents cut their son's hair short, and and equal number of reasons why they would allow them to grow it long.

I really don't get why it's such an issue for you Confused
