To think that whistling in public should be banned?

I'm the first to admit that I'm highly intolerant but I absolutely detest people who whistle in the supermarket (for example) and think of it than nothing more than noise pollution.
To me it's unnecessary and tuneless crap and I don't see why people feel the need to do it and why people should have to listen to it.
I know men probably do it out of some sort of nervous tick or something but it drives me crazy when I'm trying to do the food shopping and some bastard is whistling though every aisle.

While we are pushing for legislation, can we have a sub law that bans my DH from la la laing please.
He does it when there is nothing for him to think about IMO. When challenged he feigns surprise and asks if I am sure.

I don't agree. Even tuneless whistling is better than overspill from headphones.

I like to hear someone whistling, it sounds cheerful. I'm the only one in my family who can't carry a tune.

I love whistling! I don't do it to annoy you or because I'm nervous, I just get a tune stuck in my head and have to whistle along. Don't deny me my small pleasures in life.

This thread had just made me realise I can't remember when I last heard my dad whistle although it used to be constant when I was younger. Has he given up whistling? Why? Feeling a bit anxious about him now.

No, aaaah from people under the age of 10 or so is fine, it's those about 54 who piss me off beyond reason.

I love a good whistle as I'm shopping. If I'm alone I pop my headphones in, whistle along and sometimes even sing. People look at me like I'm odd, but fuck those prudes, if I want to enjoy my Tesco trip I will!

Gosh- that takes me back - my grandfather used to whistle and I had forgotten- it was lovely!

Oooh greensnail You've made me realise the same about my Dad. He doesn't whistle much these days :( But I inherited my excellent whistling skills from him and do like a good toot. I am very tuneful in my whistling OP, if that helps.

There are so many other things to ban. Leaving the serious issues aside, first on my list would be men who say "Ooh! Better out than in!" every single time they fart. Second would be the discussion of IBS symptoms outside of a medical environment. A close third would be discussion of minor medical procedures with anything other than "It seemed to go well and is much better now/ I have to go back in next week for a follow-up/ I'm on painkillers for a while," not the full details of the cervical smear, precisely how they tied your piles, or how you've had some 'really wet farts' since you had your hernia seen to.

I used to work in a shop, and before I opened up I'd pop out front for a cigarette. The high street would be really quiet, not many people around at all, mainly just the street sweepers. Every morning there was a man sitting on a bench near my shop whistling a tune. It was a different tune every single day, and he was amazing. It really used to brighten up my day and make me smile. It was like something out of Oliver Twist.

He'd always be whistling if you saw him around the town, but it was the eerie quiet of the morning broken up by his whistling carried through the town that made it stick in my mind. It was really beautiful.

I like to whistle tunes myself. My father taught me. I didn't like the way he whistled though. You know; the sort with a finger from each hand in the mouth as if you are calling someone.

My XMIL didn't like it when I whistled so I told her that I whistle only when I'm happy and carried on. She didn't like me.

I stopped whistling for a while when my newDH told me that he couldn't whistle. Miss him .
