to think that banning the use of the word "God" is a bit much?

Need the opinions of many women and Mothers here...
The wife has suddenly stated that she is "offended" by our three kids (and me) saying "oh God" or "God in heaven" or "for God's sake" etc as she has recently become a bit God Squad and rediscovered her Christianity.

Caused a huge row over the kitchen table three nights ago and it rumbles on with wife being pretty committed to the idea that no one should be allowed to say "Oh God" or "for God's sake" etc.,

My view is that this is unreasonable (and a bit silly) and even if you take it seriously in terms of not offending peoples' religious ideas - still a bit silly.

Am I wrong?

It's been rumbling on for three days and nights now and I need something...

All and any cast iron responses to the religious bullying very much appreciated.

LRD me admitting I'd had a drink, not pissed by the way, has aided you into creating an excuse for you suggesting I should see a doctor. Clever of you.

And no it isn't graceless. I'm not going to apologise for something I haven't done.

GhostShip · 13/10/2012 22:48

I won't ever say it again. It makes me question why I thought it acceptable though. I've seen monsters inc, it could be that.

WorraLiberty · 13/10/2012 22:48

But Cunt is still acceptable isn't it?

Please say yes or I'll die

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 13/10/2012 22:49

worra it has be as that's my favourite word Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/10/2012 22:49
Grin

Cunt is fine. IMO. God knows I don't know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for saying that ghost.

GhostShip · 13/10/2012 22:49

Yeah it is monsters inc. 'one eyed cretin'. Can't believe I was only TEN when that came out. Doesn't seem that long ago.

GhostShip · 13/10/2012 22:50

in fact I would usually apologise but I admit you got my back up so I chose to be stubborn

Sorry Thanks

MeeWhoo · 13/10/2012 22:51

Idiot also means mentally disabled.....

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/10/2012 22:52

Thanks for that.

It got my back up too.

I guess we both need to say sorry. I'm sorry.

WorraLiberty · 13/10/2012 23:08

Idiot now too? Sad

Jeez I'm getting afraid to speak much to my DH's delight

KatyPeril · 13/10/2012 23:44

Yanbu. But out of respect for your wife, why not try and say 'Oh my Edward Cullen/Mr Rochester/Another fictional character' instead?

Portofino · 14/10/2012 09:45

The comment "it is not just men who are victims of the feminist regime" has to be one of the most bizarre statements I have ever read on here. Ghostship, I really recommend that you read the Equality Illusion linky

GhostShip · 14/10/2012 11:17

If you're going to quote me, do it properly at least. I didn't say that.

GhostShip · 14/10/2012 11:17

And one woman's interpretation, ie that book, doesn't make something fact.

GhostShip · 14/10/2012 11:23

I'm not having this 'debate' anymore anyway. I can't believe all this has stemmed from me pointing out that there are in fact adverts that take the piss out of men.

And after reading back, thankyou Worra and Fanjos for trying to lightenin things up last night Thanks

Portofino · 14/10/2012 16:23

But as I pointed out earlier - the role of the hapless man in the kitchen just reinforces the point that men have no place there. It's in fact a double whammy of sexism.

financialwizard · 14/10/2012 16:36

My MIL is religious and I am so paranoid about saying it in her presence I say it more when I am than when I am not.

GhostShip · 14/10/2012 17:02

Portofino - not of the examples I've made include a 'hapless man in the kitchen'.

One, a man being used as a foot stool.
Second, man being used as a servant.
Third, women taking the piss out of men for man flu.

I don't think there is anything wrong with these by the way, although I'm sure the reaction an advert with a man using a woman as a footstool would be enough for it to be not aired..

I was just pointing out that there are instances in where men are 'disrespected' contrary to what some women like to think.

Latara · 14/10/2012 17:40

Oh dear a bunfight - i never used to use the word 'bunfight' before i joined MN!

I could sit on the fence & shout ''Fight, fight!!'' but don't like splinters so....

Yes men are disrespected in some adverts; but women are VERY often 'pulled to pieces' over their appearance by the media.
Both are wrong but i think women do get more disrespect - either way it's not pleasant to be disrespected.

Racial abuse is a complex subject not relevant to the OP.

Disablism definitely is a problem but again, irrelevant to the OP.

So everyone calm down & chill out please if you haven't already...!!!

Portofino · 14/10/2012 18:09

Of course there are examples of men being disrepected. But you have to take this in the context of instutional sexism against women. One example of a man being made to look foolish in an advert vs. 100s upon 100s examples of daily, systematic abuse, sexualisation, misogynist stereotyping. See the Jimmy Saville as a case in point. But when a man is used as a footstool - well - my crikey, reams of complaints about sexist advertising. But every single day I see some attractive young thing (female) in various states of undress to sell products. No-one ever complains about that.

GhostShip · 14/10/2012 18:13

You're telling me stuff I already know.

I haven't said that there is none of that, have I?

You're trying to make out as though I don't believe women are victims of sexism. I'm not.

All I ever meant to do was to show that there examples of men. You may say 'of course there is', but I was never replying to you was I . I was talking to a completely different poster who said there were NO examples.

I haven't complained about anything, and nor have I tried to make it a competition of who is worse off, like yourself and other people have tried to.

ClippedPhoenix · 14/10/2012 18:14

Portofino is spot on here. I punch the air when i see a sexist ad sending up men for a change. It friggin helps me deal with the male sexist shit day in day out. Put the shoe on the other foot for a change! have done to you what happens to me ALL the time. Too right!

Portofino · 14/10/2012 18:15

And as for quoting you correctly. LRD said, she didn't mind a bun fight but didn't like idiocy, to which you replied:

"idiocy

you mean someone questioning a feminist regime? You mean someone trying to put the point across that its not just men who are victims of feminsm.

You make feminsm a joke. "

GhostShip · 14/10/2012 18:15

Like I've said, I've not once said that women aren't victims of sexism.

Shes arguing a point that I haven't tried to argue against, it's pointless.

GhostShip · 14/10/2012 18:17

That was meant to say women, which I did say afterwards. And you still didn't quote me correctly anyway.

And to be fair, I said that comment because I was angry and slightly drunk.
