To think this woman was being an unbearable nob?

Reminded of this by another thread about offering seats on trains, but didn't want to hijack...

Recently I was on a cross-country train and it was extremely busy. Lots of people standing up. The guard was passing through the carriages asking people to remove luggage from seats so that others could sit down.

One woman- pretty heavily pregnant- who had her bags on the seat next to her, in response just looked apologetic and said 'sorry... I'm pregnant?' (no further explanation as to why this meant she needed two seats). And the guard just walked on and left her to it.

I don't blame him for not insisting she move the bags- he was probably wary of coming across as bullish and bossy to a (simper) pregnant woman.

But I do think she was being a bit of a twat, frankly.

Why on earth should being pregnant mean you need two seats? She wasn't abnormally massive, she could have moved to aisle seat if she wanted to have access to the loo....what other reason could there be?!

AIBU?

Maybe she was planning on delivering her baby onto the second seat?

Hammy02 · 10/10/2012 10:22

YANBU. I can't think of a reason why her being pregnant means she can't put her bags by her feet or in the over-head space. Idiot.

Woozley · 10/10/2012 10:22

YANBU. Nobbish behaviour. The guard should have said "Yes, but have you purchased two seats, madam?"

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 10/10/2012 10:24

Ridiculous. Was no one who was standing brave enough to force her to move them then?

MrsKeithRichards · 10/10/2012 10:25

What an arsehole!

ShushBaby · 10/10/2012 10:26

Exit- no they didn't. I guess nobody wanted to be the one to have a go at the pregnant woman.

Well she didn't want her bags in a hard to reach place on a crowded train where she may not get help to retrieve them. Yabu.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 10/10/2012 10:28

Wow. Yanbu that's bloody rude pregnant or not. I always put my bags on the seat next to me until the train or bus fills up a bit, but if there are no seats, the bags go on the floor!

MrsRhettButler · 10/10/2012 10:29

If the train was that crowded of course someone would have helped her. I would have said something to her.

BigWitchLegsInWailyTights · 10/10/2012 10:29

What if they were big bags?

EarnestDullard · 10/10/2012 10:30

Maybe she was hoping that guard would offer to put them in the overhead storage for her?

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 10/10/2012 10:30

Yanbu.

I am 3 weeks off the big day and I wouldn't dream of my bags getting priority over people's bums!

I would assume its her first and she's milking it.

MikeOxard · 10/10/2012 10:30

Maybe she was being a nob, or maybe she had really bad back and/or pelvic pain (quite common in pregnancy) and found it much easier to pick heavy bags up from chair height rather than heaving them off the floor. We don't know. Y might be BU.

BigWitchLegsInWailyTights · 10/10/2012 10:31

No Mrs Butler people don't always help at all! I've been left to squat in the interconnecting bit when I was hugely pregnant. The only good thing was that I was near the loo! Nobody said "Oh have my seat" or anything.

I would have if I had seen a massively pregnant woman sitting on her haunches for 2 hours.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 10/10/2012 10:31

Being pregnant doesn't mean you should have two seats, in any circumstances.

BigWitchLegsInWailyTights · 10/10/2012 10:32

That's right Mike....I had a bad back for a while and it was a right pain when someone said "Oh can you pass me that?" or something as had to be unhelpful or in agony.

BigWitchLegsInWailyTights · 10/10/2012 10:32

Freddos....some pregnant women are in pain....find it hard to move...they just are. How was she to get to her bags if they were buried under a pile of other peoples' or stuffed in a rack?

alienreflux · 10/10/2012 10:33

what if they were big bags?! she got them on there didn't she?! she would have to get them off anyway?
don't get it, and i would have said (if i had been standing) can i help you move your bags? i need to sit down.

YouMayLogOut · 10/10/2012 10:34

YANBU. I'd have asked her whether the bags were pregnant too.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 10/10/2012 10:35

If she can't put her bag on the floor, she shouldn't be on the train, or shouldn't have brought bags she cant manage. Sorry, but pregnant women don't need two seats.

WorraLiberty · 10/10/2012 10:36

What a knobber!

The thing is, some people are just over entitled princesses.

Then they conceive and become over entitled pregnant princesses.

It's the same with Drama Queens who spend the day in agony cos someone stood on their foot or something. Once they're pregnant, it's likely to make the Drama llamas even worse.

Kendodd · 10/10/2012 10:36

She could have asked somebody to pass her the bags. Do you thing everybody would have said no?

BigWitchLegsInWailyTights · 10/10/2012 10:37

alien someone might have helped her...put them on and then gone.
Pointless speculating but I think that there's an awful tendancy to say "GET ON WITH IT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE" re pregnant women...no you're not ILL when you're pregnant but you might feel sick, ache, feel sad...all kinds of things.

Let up a bit people and have a thought for someone else.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 10/10/2012 10:37

Maybe she knew she's find it tricky to pick them up from a tight space.

I once sobbed on a train when fairly heavily pregnant because I couldn't get a seat and people kept bashing into me. Oh and because I was a wet blanket.

I even got off and waited for a later train because I couldn't stand the (ahem) persecution. That was the only time I suffered from such extreme pregnancy-related preciousness however Grin

Kendodd · 10/10/2012 10:38

Was it you on the train BigWhitchLegs?
