To think that the bullying culture on MN can be a bit much....

tjah04 · 04/10/2012 08:50

Having been a member of MN since 2003 I have seen and read some disgusting comments from other members particuarly on this board.

I am starting to think that some of these people must be very sad and insecure.

Some of the names that are called are disgusting and I am sure that these people would never go up to someone in RL and call them that.

And do not get me started on the "I am better than you because I can spell" attitude which seems to be the final insult if all else fails.

Other comments include

"troll" "Oh not another thread" etc.

It is cyber bullying at the end of the day and as mothers shouldn't we all just grow up a bit? The MN team do a great job of deleting such posts but often the OP has seen it and the damage is already done.

OP posts:

I personally like SHOUTING.

How do you like them apples? Eh? EH?

NolaFfing · 04/10/2012 16:44

I bet you could link the shit out of that thread amillion. I bet we'd all agree that Tee wasn't bullied. Shock

TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/10/2012 16:46

pag you are looking just fine.
It was a funny thread.
tee thought it was funny.
So did most other people.

There was no bullying.

You ok pag

Pagwatch · 04/10/2012 16:46

You can link it if you want.

I just don't understand why she would have been massively upset unless it got worse after the opening.
A lot of the people going 'oh but I just don't understand' were a bit thick and snarky rather than nasty and horrible.
And a few genuinely just didn't understand
And lots of us were sticking up for Tee being perfectly nice and reasonable.

Really. If Tee needed to recover I would be aghast.

SuperB0F · 04/10/2012 16:47

You have a very attractive mouth, Nola.

mumtomoley · 04/10/2012 16:47

The early part of this thread is a good example of the sort of thing that the OP is talking about. I.e. a group of posters trying to derail the thread onto what they want to talk about.

Maryzed says above that it is trying to be lighthearted. Probably it is, but honestly for many people reading and not necessarily posting it can be really annoying to read through pages of chat and sarky/rude comments trivialising the OP and doing the internet equivalent of talking over someone because you don't agree with what they are saying.

I've seen it on so many threads and it's irritating that the agenda of what can and can't be discussed seems to be set by a group of people who post so prolifically. I know theoretically anyone else can still post, but seriously why bother?

If you think someone is talking shit/being boring why not just ignore the thread? If it was different people derailing on different threads then yes, that's just life. But it seems to be the same names coming up again all the time.

I don't think it's bullying though - just misjudged.

Pagwatch · 04/10/2012 16:47

As long as you think so Tantrums

LtEveDallas · 04/10/2012 16:48

chippy,dont know what that means

Rude, prickly and quick to take offence. HTH.

People tend to join in with public conversations, like I did. Yep, words are my business in many ways.

Nope, Tee didn't take 2 days to recover - she just wasn't interested in the thread. On FB she was told what the thread had turned into, and came back and took the piss. She laughed on the thread and laughed about it on FB - did you not see that?

TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/10/2012 16:48

Please link the thread. Then we can have a vote.

But I suppose if we all agreed with each other and disagreed with million that would be bullying?

No,that wouldnt be bullying me Tantrums.
I will go and link.

LtEveDallas, are you a journalist in the army?

SusanneLinder · 04/10/2012 16:51

Well I have been on here for about 18 mths now, and have never felt bullied. But then I have been on various forums for many years now, and am made of MUCH sterner stuff. But then I have been a member of one of the bitchiest forums on the interweb (sadly defunct now-but served its purpose at time), so Mumsnet is like a vicars tea party in comparison. :o

I am much fluffier now. :)

The way a thread goes is determined by all those who post on it. If you don't like the way it's going and want to go back to the OP, then post your own reply

mumtomoley · 04/10/2012 16:53

Though I should add, many other elements of Mumsnet are fab and I love it Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/10/2012 16:56

BIWI that is just lazy and actually untrue unless you have really teeny tiny fingers, like a doll

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/10/2012 16:57

well LaQ you have been involved upthread. It's a new trend and not one I'm keen on

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 16:58

Fuck off Funnys. Nothing wrong with my fingers.

'The way a thread goes is determined by all those who post on it. If you don't like the way it's going and want to go back to the OP, then post your own reply'

I did that earlier Biwi (right here) and got told to go and start another thread if I wanted to discuss the topic seriously.

That was a surreal moment! Considering I was on topic, and nearly everyone else was a bit, well, off.

Ed

It was me that suggested you start another thread.

I said that AS THIS THREAD HAD DEVELOPED THE WAY IT HAD AND MOST PEOPLE CONSIDERED THE OP TO BE GOADING AND DELIBERATE IT MIGHT BE AN IDEA TO START ANOTHER THREAD SHOULD YOU WISH A PROPER DISCUSSION

Fuck me

Nothing like twisting stuff to suit.

"And, if I wanted to keep on plugging about paint, but everyone was clearly more happy chatting about socks...well, I'd just think 'Fair enough, looks like people have lost interest. No harm done."

But 'everyone' isn't actually everyone, it's a specific group of people? That's the point.
