Friend has posted on FB:

'Dear Jim
Can you fix it for me to go out with a girl from my class?
Love Jeremy Forrest, Aged 30'

Said friend is a police officer :(

I'm horrified. De-friended him.

Great that we still live in a society where jokes cn be made about rape and child abuse. Fucking awful.

I think if you have in anyway been impacted (on a personal level) by rape or child abuse you would feel ill by jokes like that (as I do) :(

londonone · 02/10/2012 18:27

Halloween how is that job related? It is the news! Unless he happens to be a investigating officer, which I would guess he is not!

procrastinor · 02/10/2012 18:27

Bugger.

I'm sure if this policeman were to be involved in a child abuse or rape case he would do his job. It's meh at best and hardly an indicator that this copper would behave less than professionally.

Report him?! Jeez.

londonone · 02/10/2012 18:27

Well then I suggest you get off this thread then monkeys

solidgoldbrass · 02/10/2012 18:28

And I am far more appalled by the idea that people should report others to their superiors for making jokes that are broadly satirical, such as this one. It's officious and shows that you have little or no sense of proportion.

BasicallySFB · 02/10/2012 18:28

I don't see the need to make everyone think like me - though I'd quite like to live in a world where rape, child abuse and a whole bunch of other stuff wasn't deemed funny - defriending was enough for me as stated, I don't have to see it then!

OP posts:
halloweeneyqueeney · 02/10/2012 18:28

"FFS, are we in the playground "ooooohhhhhhhh, I'm tellinnnnnng!" As i said above, I am sure he has colleagues as FB friends and if it is deemed inappropriate then one of them will do something"

or everyone else will be thinking that someone else will do it?

anyway those of you that think its reasonable, what harm do you think would come from reporting? if its so reasonable and "just a joke" like?

BasicallySFB · 02/10/2012 18:29

Enough for me in terms of not reporting / screenshotting etc etc.

OP posts:
solidgoldbrass · 02/10/2012 18:29

Monkeys: not necessarily. How you feel is valid, but not everyone feels like you: I have known survivors of sexual assault use black humour as a coping mechanism - it works for them so who's to say they should be made to shut up because not everyone agrees?

halloweeneyqueeney · 02/10/2012 18:30

sense of proportion? I wouldn't send it to a lorry driver's boss! this is a police officer!

BasicallySFB · 02/10/2012 18:31

solidgoldbrass hadn't thought of it like that - interesting point. Still glad I defriended tho.

He made a mistake putting it on Facebook because of reactions such as this thread but really, humour like this is extremely commonplace amongst police, doctors, nurses, funeral directors etc etc

Making a joke like this is not the same thing as thinking the actual events are funny.

I'm pretty much with Londoner unless she said something crazy since I typed this.

londonone · 02/10/2012 18:32

Probably a massive overreaction from the senior staff as they feel they have to be seen to be doing something to appease the likes of you. That's the harm.

Mrsbiggs · 02/10/2012 18:33

My partner in the forces he found it funny.

I work with teenagers - I do not Hmm.

MrSunshine · 02/10/2012 18:34

I don't find it remotely funny, but neither do I find it horrifying People have always and will always joke about everything, even and especially the worst taste stuff.

procrastinor · 02/10/2012 18:35

He could potentially get in trouble as senior officers are petrified of stories getting leaked to the daily mail or some such and the public clutching their pearls in shock.

It's hard not to personalise jokes if it relates to you but I'm sure this officer would never dream of taking sexual assault less seriously. There is a big difference between ones personal humour preferences and professionally standards and I don't think one necessarily informs the other.

halloweeneyqueeney · 02/10/2012 18:36

"really, humour like this is extremely commonplace amongst police, doctors, nurses, funeral directors etc etc" Yes it is, in "safe" contexts i.e. around colleagues when it's "safe" and not going to be overheard by people who might be sensitive to it! not on facebook!

don't insult most public service workers by not seeing that most are perfectly capable of seeing the line there!

sugarice · 02/10/2012 18:36

Read it, think what a dickhead he is for writing it then get on with whatever you're doing.

LonelyCloud · 02/10/2012 18:37

YANBU, particularly as your friend's a police officer.

And people in professions may use black humour as a coping mechanism - but if this is the case, they really should know better than to put jokes like this up on a Facebook page or similar.

londonone · 02/10/2012 18:37

Halloween, that attitude is bloody scary, that you expect public servants tonot only carry out their duties impeccably ( which is reasonable)but to also have private lives that YOU judge to be acceptable. Bloody scary stuff.

halloweeneyqueeney · 02/10/2012 18:38

actually most public service workers registering bodies require that, so it's not just me!

weeonion · 02/10/2012 18:38

Is there not a difference in survivors using humour as a coping mechanism for their own experiences and others making a joke out of pretty much anything?

halloweeneyqueeney · 02/10/2012 18:38

and most have no problem in complying at all! its not difficult

BasicallySFB · 02/10/2012 18:39

Ah maybe I'm too uptight ... I'm not generally a pearl clutcher and generally pretty liberal - guess it's the same reaction I'd have to jokes about disability or ethnicity. I'm pretty uptight about language actually too and have been known to defriend when disabalist or racist stuff posted - maybe time for a cull!
