AIBU to think that child tax credits should only be for the very needy rather than just supplementing people's income? Family of 5 down the street with only one part time earner heading off for 2 weeks on holiday. Isn't the govt just subsidising thei...

YADNBU - I'm sick of the system. Disguised benefits for those who don't always 'need' them in many cases and I know this from first hand experience....

" the government doesnt have any money of its own ."

Oh no, really? That is sad.

Have they heard about tax credits? They may be eligible.

No need to thank me.

The inets, We already have a fabulous 'voucher' system in this country, tis called sterling. The work perfectly well, you trade the appropriate one for something you want and need, no need to amend them.

My bugbear is that 'tax credits' are NOT HANDOUTS!

Before TCs were brought in, I had a tax allowance of about £7K. Then TCs arrived, and suddenly my tax 'threshold' dropped to about £2K. My tax bill jumped from about £1K to about £2.5K. But that was all OK, cos the nice government then kindly gave me back some Tax Credits. Hmm

The thresholds change from year to year and family to family of course, but the fact remains that in most cases, the government takes tax away from us and then gives it back. It's a sleight of hand, not a hand-out. Hmm Angry

Tax credits is a mean tested benefit. I pups prefer a return to MIRA'S, married persons tax allowance etc where you actually had to pay in to take out but nobody asked me and it's where they all go wrong Grin

I think you are wrong to blame the Conservatives for the high rate of unemployment in this country. I suppose Labour played a major part in our unemployment but most of the blame should go to the EU with its daft directives about anyone from anywhere in the EU (which none of us voted for in any way) could move to any other part.

PeahenTailFeathers · 29/09/2012 16:04

I do blame the Conservatives (but then I blame them for everything bad, being a liberal lefty Grin). There have been huge cuts in public sector employment (estimated 50,000 jobs lost in 2010-2011) and there may be a further 500,000 to 600,000 jobs lost between now and 2015 as a direct result of reduced government funding. This has had a knock on effect on the private sector which is expected to somehow provide enough jobs to cover the public sector job losses while it suffers from the general public's lack of confidence in the economy and reluctance to spend, as well as banks not lending like they are supposed to; as a result of these, private sector employment has also fallen.

I don't have a degree in PPE so I fail to see how spending cuts will kick start the economy. My instinct would be to get people spending money (certainly not cut benefits because at least that money is going back into the economy) although I freely admit I dunno where all the money to do this would come from. Not that the government cuts are making any difference - the rate of public borrowing is still going up. So I think they dunno what to do either.

Totally off topic - sorry!
