To stop giving a shit and get fat!

Im a 10 on top 12 on bottem, this can to yo up and down slightly. Im dreading a life time of denying myself cake biscuits cheese and nachos. Why can't I let myself go ( as my mother would say) and stop giving a shit and just eat cake. Whats going to be so bad if I end up a 14/16?

What's so good about staying a 10/12 I would love to be a 6/8 if I could, but hey I love food and I want cake every day so fuck it, it's winter and I'm going to get fat!

Ineedbrandy you dont have 2000 calories on fast days, you have 500-600 which is probably exceeded just by all those drinks you have Wink

But just drink less tea on those days, with canderel.

And its only 2 days, the other 5 you can eat whatever you want. Grin

Although strangely, I was finding that my appetite lessened a LOT. So on fast days Id think to myself 'tomorrow Im going to eat this, that, a few of them, a few of these.'
But actually, when it came to an 'eating day' I ate far less then I would have done before I was dieting. Despite knowing I could eat whatever I wanted and still know Id lose weight.

panicnotanymore · 25/09/2012 18:59

amicissimma I've noticed the same, but was too scared of getting flamed to say so! I've also noticed my larger friends all really do believe they have slow metabolisms, and are convinced they eat almost nothing. They skip meals and eat the tiniest sandwich for lunch, but mindlessly consume calories during the day, and don't seem to realise they are doing so. I bite my tongue, and take the comments about me being as skinny as a rake and it not being fair as I eat so much on the chin. I eat proper meals, no cake, no choc, no mindless grazing, ever.

frenchfancy · 25/09/2012 19:02

I thought I would pass out on only 500 cals a day - I was wrong.

I thought I woud be lethargic and not be able to concentrate - I was wrong.

I now look forward to fast days as I get loads done, my mind feels sharper and I have more motivation to do stuff.

I find it much much easier than calorie resticting every day. I have leftover birthday cake in the fridge, it hasn't bothered me today as there is no way even one crumb is coming out of my 500 (when you have so few calories you make every one count) and I know I can eat it tomorrow.

Loads of people on the thread are doing it for the health benefits rather than weight loss. We refer to it as a way of eating (WOE) rather than a diet.

TalkinPeace2 · 25/09/2012 19:02

I've been flamed into oblivion for saying the same.
Does not make it any less true

  • as the posters on 5:2 are starting to realise.
Beamur · 25/09/2012 19:25

My DP also commented that the day after his fast day his normal food had never tasted so good!

MarysBeard · 25/09/2012 19:28

The thing is though, larger people need more to feel full, so it wouldn't be unusual for someone larger to have second helpings.

Ephiny · 25/09/2012 19:34

I agree with amicissimma too. The people I know who are overweight simply eat far more than I do. They don't think they do, they'll see me eating a slice of cake on occasion and think 'ooh it's not fair', but ignore the (to me) vast amounts they're regularly and mindlessly eating and drinking every day.

CaptainVonTrapp · 25/09/2012 19:42

panicnotanymore when you say no cake no choc ever do you mean EVER or just once a week or something? Just wondered. Really funny about your colleagues...

Inneedofbrandy · 25/09/2012 19:57

I agree amicissimma with what you say, but I love food I would never say somethings to rich. I love rich creamy chocolatey food. Thats why I might as well stop fighting the tide of getting fat. (or try 5:2 or/and running)

I don't want to give up my love of food and count calories and deny myself what I want!

OHforDUCKScake I meant count the 2000 on non fast days?

minipie I don't know how to count calories, when I tried working things out on fitness pal I was coming way way under what I could have, so I put in say a homemade raspberry muffing as a asda one on the list. All that calorie stuff confuses me.

I have always wanted there to be a tv programme showing what healthy weight people eat during the day and how active the are, rather than showing people who too skinny or too overweight. I think it would be really helpful.

Inneedofbrandy · 25/09/2012 20:08

YY FushiaFernica That would be great.

I even asked the nurse at drs a while back, and got told they only have information about healthy eating for obese and over weight people.

amicissimma, there was a doctor on that 'the truth about fat' programme who started out with the same view as you. They did all sorts of experiments on fat and thin people and discovered that the slimmer people feel hunger. They are regularly either hungry or full. The more overweight people never felt really hungry but didn't report feeling properly 'full' either.

It was very interesting and confirmed what I always suspected, that we're all facing a different challenge wrt food. I have a bmi of 23 but that takes effort. I reduce (not drastically, but moderately and consistently) what I eat. Every day I could eat a bit more. I'm not miserable, or starving myself far from it!

Which brings me back to BeckSparkles point about fat being a feminist issue. Well, all I can say is that even when I'm on my own in the shower with nobody there to see me, I am the one who doesn't like that my tummy is a bit too fleshy. I am the one who would prefer to be thinner. YES I'm influenced by the media, but even if I lose weight my weight will still be within a healthy range.

LizLemon007 · 25/09/2012 20:46

I DO have to count calories. Not obsessively but I have an internal barometre in my head, ticking constantly. The moment I stop, I put on 3lbs. Only 3lbs but it all goes around my middle and makes me feel horrible.

So, whilst I agree with amicissimma up to a point, I think that it's when I look dumpy and feel unhappy with my weight that I'm not thinking about food. A state she admires and associates with natural thinness.

I just eat instinctively and it doesn't feel like greed or foolishness. This would be just normal eating. Meals with the odd snack when hungry. When I eat like that I am not thinking about food.

At the moment I'm back in my calorie-awareness mode. How do I set my internal barometre so that I feel full after 1500 calories???? That is the 64 million dollar question I think... 1800 cals 'fills' me but leaves me with a tummy. 1500 calories gets rid of my tummy but leaves me feeling a wee bit underfed.

It's not as easy as thin people think it is!!!

panicnotanymore · 25/09/2012 22:20

CaptainVonTrapp I don't eat cake, ever, because I really don't like it. The only dessert I will ever eat is whole milk plain yoghurt with fruit and breakfast cereal. I don't have a sweet tooth, and find things like cheesecake inedible. Chocolate I might eat one square, or a couple of chocolate buttons, but that is it.

My weakness is pastry (savoury). Love that!!!

I do love food, and never feel deprived, but was very lucky to grow up in a home where everyone had a normal attitude to food, and no one ate sweet stuff. It's just what I know and am comfortable with. My parents are in their 70s, and still play tennis every day and often beat players 40 years younger than they are. It isn't just genetic luck, they look after themselves.

OHforDUCKScake · 25/09/2012 22:22

inneedofbrandy you dont couny calories on food days. Grin you eat what you want. Eat 3000 calories if you like.

I really reccomend this diet.

Anonymumous · 25/09/2012 22:40

If I was you OP, I'd leave the sugar out of your tea and use those calories for cheese instead. Yes I KNOW it tastes disgusting to start with, but your body is an incredible thing and you will be amazed at how quickly you get used to it. Then one day someone will accidentally give you a cup of tea with sugar in and you will spit it out, spluttering, "Urrrggghhh!" Honestly, I promise. And then you can happily stuff your face on cheesy nachos which, let's face it, are much nicer and more filling than a boring old cup of tea anyway. Smile

LookBehindYou · 26/09/2012 08:24

amicissima your post was one big 'view'.

panicnotanymore · 26/09/2012 08:48

amicissimma I have observed the same, so unpopular though your observations may be they must be valid in at least some cases.

Most weight issues have an element of denial behind them. I swear I 'can't put on weight' and have a really fast metabolism. It's rubbish. When my trainer made me keep a food diary I managed fine. I thought I was eating more, but actually unless I keep a record I don't really. The same with my bigger colleagues, they think they eat nothing, but if they actually kept a record of every mindless item they put in their mouth they'd realise the calories in all those random tiny snacks that they forget about add up to more than my cooked lunch.

I think we all of us have a natural size, which has less to do with metabolism, and more to do with the exercise level which have and the amount of food that we consume and consider normal. That's the food we actually consume, not the food we think we consume. The two often differ!

Secret eaters on TV is a case in point. The participants food diaries usually declare less than 200 calories a day. The actual amount they eat is usually well in excess of 4000. Obviously an extreme example.

I have started having a cube of sugar in my drinks if I feel like it, which I do more often with tea than coffee. I find it is often just enough to stop me wanting a more calorific snack. Only 16 calories. Just helps with a mid afternoon lull at times.

Also I have my tea with the kids. Good to be able to eat when you are hungry. Working office hours made this more difficult. The times of the day I am most hungry are between 11 am & 12pm and between 4.30pm & 5.30pm.

If I'm going for a run or to the gym I eat some breakfast an hour before, but often I'm not that hungry first thing and have a banana & milky coffee. Then I'll have a good brunch at about 11.30.
