"I'm not a feminist"

"oh, I'm so much less of a feminist than you are"

"I'm so not a femynyst I don't even know how to spell it"

It is one of my favourite things though when I'm told that I am ramming stuff down people's throats, when really I'm just having a conversation.

DameAbsy · 21/09/2012 15:34

My mom also refers to her and her friends as the girls, and they're all nearly (and some are, and beyond) 70. But my mother is hardly the paragon of feminism.

At work about a year ago, some douchebag in head office came up with a stupid plan, and there was a call where me and the (female) head of a department in the US said that it was not a good idea, and it should not be implemented, giving reasons, statistics etc. Douchebag then phones my line manager after the call and goes "har har. I think the girls just don't want to do any work har har har". 1 year in, this plan has been a DISASTER and just didn't work out. I TOLD him so. Repeatedly.

"My OH showed me this thread in disbelief after showing me the previous (police statements thread) also in disbelief [tangent: we both have friends in GMP who were shown that thread by colleagues, were offended and instructed not to post in reply.]"

Happy to give them my name and address.

What would happen if I refereed to you all as 'old girls' ?

SheppySheepdog · 21/09/2012 15:34

Because if you say you are a feminist, you might antagonise the men innit and totally won't be a "cool wife" anymore. Or something.

I'd rather over-think than not think, personally. Grin

SuePurblybilt · 21/09/2012 15:35

RCheshy, are you saying that because you, as a middle aged man, didn't feel offended by a superficially similar incident, then it's all OK? We should stop clucking?

And also, grab what buns? Sticky, or sitting-upon ones?

ShirtyKnot · 21/09/2012 15:35

I'd kick you in the cock getmore.

Hullygully · 21/09/2012 15:35

SuePurblybilt · 21/09/2012 15:36

Ah, I see Punk. I thought I'd not been clear/made sense. It happens. So much.

ShirtyKnot · 21/09/2012 15:36

I wouldn't really kick anyone on the cock ever and I am not joking about DV against men nor am I saying I don't like cocks or that getmore is less of a human for having cocks.

getmorenappies · 21/09/2012 15:37

arf @ Shirty ( again )

Pagwatch · 21/09/2012 15:37

If people refer to themselves in casual, friendly situations as a girl, to me it is just chat, shorthand, film flam.

If they refer to themselves as a young girl I would think they were being a bit odd.

If they refer to themselves as a young girl at their place of work I would be baffled

DameBossOfMe · 21/09/2012 15:38

Here's a funny thing.

Women who are feminists, who think feminist thoughts and believe feminist things, often don't self identify as feminists. I've actually very rarely met a non-feminist woman in real life, but have often met women who don't label themselves feminists.

Equally true is the fact that men who are misogynists, who think misogynistic thoughts and behave in misogynistic ways, don't often self identify as the male chauvinist pigs that they in fact are.

So is the problem that people aren't always very good at self-identifying what they actually are? Or that people just don't like being labelled? Or something else entirely?

atacareercrossroads · 21/09/2012 15:38

Seeker, unless I magically grow a cock when Im 70 then I may well still use girl.

Hullygully · 21/09/2012 15:38

sue, he isn't just an unoffended middle-aged man who thinks something a bit like it sort of happened to him, he has got OFFENDED friends.

Show him some respect.

SuePurblybilt · 21/09/2012 15:39

Someone said that on one of the other threads. Something like 'he called me a bird so I waited till he climbed a ladder and flicked his cock'.

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 21/09/2012 15:39

Run The World (Girls) by Beyonce it was apparently recorded to give women strength to take control Angry

I hate here comes the girls, mums know best, men can not cook and clean like women can rubbish it just reinforces the woman's place is at home looking good

PunkInDublic · 21/09/2012 15:39

If you do grow one Atacareer will you come tell us about it?

atacareercrossroads · 21/09/2012 15:39

and I am using the term correctly, as that is what I am.

It seems the dictionary agrees with me.

SuePurblybilt · 21/09/2012 15:40

Pag wins the thread :

"If people refer to themselves in casual, friendly situations as a girl, to me it is just chat, shorthand, film flam.

If they refer to themselves as a young girl I would think they were being a bit odd.

If they refer to themselves as a young girl at their place of work I would be baffled "

ZIGACKLY.

Hullygully · 21/09/2012 15:40

Well it's not that funny boss really.

Feminist often has negative connotations and frankly not many men are going to put their hands up and go, Me? I'm a right sexist cunt and proud of it, are they?

ShirtyKnot · 21/09/2012 15:40

LOL at Paggy.

I worked with a woman who was in her forties and she used to wear Winnie the Pooh earrings. Winnie the Pooh.

I mean, just...what? Why are you doing that?

Also she smelled of sanitary bins.
