To think: if you can fly first class, you shouldn't have a council house?

Facebook friends of mine (friends of RL friends really) making lots of comments this week about their impending holiday to Mauritius on which they'll be flying first class and staying in a 5 star hotel.

This couple have lived in a council house for many years (no kids yet), though this year so far she has got a new (not brand new, a year or two old but still v nice) BMW and he has a new Ducati.

One of their friends has commented on FB "Wow, did you win the lottery?!" and the wife replied "no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday".

First class flights to Mauritius are £4k each. A week in a 5 star hotel must be at least £2k and probably more. That's £10k for a week's holiday. AIBU to think that if people can squirrel away that much money for a holiday, they shouldn't be living in a bloody council house subsidised by taxes from the rest of us?

No one gave me a goat when signing on the dotted line? Maybe these are only standard issue for some LA's?

LynetteScavo · 19/09/2012 23:20

I'm impressed a couple with no children yet have managed to live in a council house for many years. How did they get one in the first place? I thought the last conservative government sold most council homes.

If people can squirrel away 10K, they should put it towards a deposit for a house and holiday in Bognor, instead of going somewhere nice. It should be the law. And why go to Mauritius for one week? If you are going first class, at least stay for two weeks, I bet 2 weeks isn't that much more expensive.

What ever next..council house dwellers eating M&S ready meals, rather shopping at Aldi and cooking from scratch? Or people spending thier benefits on cigarettes and alcohol? Shock

5inthebed · 19/09/2012 23:22

Or maybe buying pre cut fruit Lynette? Let's start another MN conspiracy!

EchoBitch · 19/09/2012 23:23

I did wonder about the council house yet no kids LynetteScarvo .

Load of old bollocks.

I am covetting several lovely flats right by the sea. Be a bit of a squish with all of us in, but the tenants have a lovely rose garden with little ornaments in, it is quaint and fabulously kept, right next to some beautiful scenery and good restaurants. But, should I ever be on the waiting list and ever find myself at the top of it, I doubt very much that a little old lady will keel over just so I can move in. I will be much more likely to get a shit heap in the middle of Swilly. If, IF, I was lucky enough to find myself in that little HA flat by the sea with the kids sleeping in the communal sheds, I Would Not Move. Ever.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/09/2012 23:24

Ds1has bet dh £50 that he (ds1)will have kept a goat for at least a year, by the time he is 40. Enough bets like that and we will be able to fly first class!

You spent time calculating the cost of their holiday?

ShavingPrimateRyan · 19/09/2012 23:25

Do you know what OP even if they did win the lottery it would be non of your fucking business!
I can't believe that you even tOok the time to research a breakdown of the prices! Shock
You sound quite jealous! Did you not think that maybe your friends have a mortgage on their house (the right to buy iirc)?
YABU!

PavlovtheCat · 19/09/2012 23:26

All it means though kim is that it is easier to remove gobshites. It does not mean that after 6 months you are going to be chucked out, or, once you get a job you can be moved on, it just means it is not a guaranteed right any more, but it is still much much more secure than private landlords, so for that reason alone why would someone want to move, and why do they deserve less protection than other people?

Hm.

What you're asking OP is, if childless people can afford expensive cars and expensive holidays, should the rest of us (most of whom can't afford those things or children or secure housing) be subsidising their housing?

I'm going to say no on this one. YANBU.

How did they get a council house without having having any children? Confused

RandallPinkFloyd · 19/09/2012 23:42

Do you have a link I can look at at all Pavlov? If that's not too cheeky. Or can you direct me where to find out more?

Are life-time tenancies really being scrapped? It's not something I know anything about tbh.

If they are I don't know what the fuck I'm meant to do tbh. There is no chance I will ever own a home. The idea of being stuck in private renting for ever is just soul destroying.

OhTheConfusion · 19/09/2012 23:43

OP, my friend and her DH live in a council house. Friend got it when she fell pregnant at 17 and her parents kicked her out... now 13yrs later she has met her now DH, gained her degree, had 2 more children and continues to live in her well maintained and loved home.

She pay's rent, she is a tax payer as is her DH... hardly 'costing the tax payer' when you are the tax payer!

People like you make me mad... you really are quite the 'friend' to them!

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 19/09/2012 23:44

how many on here object to Bob Crow who is on a wage way above the national average still living in a council property i certainly do

a council house is needed for a family on a low income not a couple who have money to buy expensive cars and go away on expensive holidays if there was no shortage of council homes that would be different but there is

quoteunquote · 19/09/2012 23:45

AIBU to think that if people can squirrel away that much money for a holiday, they shouldn't be living in a bloody council house subsidised by taxes from the rest of us

seeing as we have subsidised the banks, should all bankers be stopped flying first class?

I think lifelong tenancies are being scraped for new tenants not existing ones randall

LynetteScavo · 19/09/2012 23:46

kim, it's not as simple as that...

DH and I earn between us a decent amount of money. We have 3 DC, and have a mortgage on a 3 bed house.

SIL has been on benefits for years. She and her adult DD live in a 3 bed council house.

DH and I both need cars to work. SIL does not need a car.

SIL appears to have more disposable income than me and DH. Confused Confused Confused

SIL is very bright, and knows she is better off financially not working, than putting to use one of her two degrees.

Fleetingly it has crossed my mind that SIL shouldn't have a council house and tattoos and sit around cafe Nero all day if she chooses to make no effort to work. But it's not that straight forward. TBH, I am a bit jealous of SIL. Although I wouldn't swap places with her for all the tea in China.
