To think: if you can fly first class, you shouldn't have a council house?

Facebook friends of mine (friends of RL friends really) making lots of comments this week about their impending holiday to Mauritius on which they'll be flying first class and staying in a 5 star hotel.

This couple have lived in a council house for many years (no kids yet), though this year so far she has got a new (not brand new, a year or two old but still v nice) BMW and he has a new Ducati.

One of their friends has commented on FB "Wow, did you win the lottery?!" and the wife replied "no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday".

First class flights to Mauritius are £4k each. A week in a 5 star hotel must be at least £2k and probably more. That's £10k for a week's holiday. AIBU to think that if people can squirrel away that much money for a holiday, they shouldn't be living in a bloody council house subsidised by taxes from the rest of us?

I was under the impression it for designed to support those in need, ie those who were on a lower wage and need housing and couldnt afford anything else.

Mail,I assume they have staff, living with all that money of course.

5inthebed · 19/09/2012 22:59

The people that is, not the goat, it's illegal for goats to have staff.

RandallPinkFloyd · 19/09/2012 22:59

Seriously OP, it's ok to feel envious but really not ok to be resentful.

In their own words they saved up for ages so what's the problem. You have no idea how long ages is. They could mean 20 years for all you know.

Or would you prefer the UK system dictated that no one be able to afford to do anything more than exist?

Shakey1500 · 19/09/2012 23:00

How do you know they haven't won a competition Hmm?

It's quite feasible they won a "This Morning" one, being as there's a new car as well. Perhaps they answered one of those incredibly difficult multiple choice questions Wink

But seriously, it's none of your business. YABVU

FFS council housing is not subsidised, people pay rent and It is fuck all to do with you or anyone else what they do with their money. As far as I know it is still legal to live in a council house and have a holiday :/

LST · 19/09/2012 23:01

Kim yes. That's about how much I pay. What's your point? Hmm

mrsscoob · 19/09/2012 23:01

Socknickingpixie · 19/09/2012 23:03

Errrrm, anyone can apply to live in council accommodation.... if your circumstances change then you still have the right to live within the property allocated to you and which you rent.

Envy - much OP?

LST · 19/09/2012 23:04

Haha loopy

Council tenants pay a fair rent, it is the greedy private landlords that people should have a problem with. Maybe they should lower their rents to be more in line with council rents rather than the other way around.

LST · 19/09/2012 23:05

SP tbh I think she has Grin

SPsFanjoShiversTheTimbers · 19/09/2012 23:05

The true problem is who will feed the goat while they are away

TraineeBabyCatcher · 19/09/2012 23:06

To some extend its not even greed that puts private rent so high, but that they have a mortgage to pay (im assuming rent covers over and above the cost of mortgages) and house prices are crazy

LST · 19/09/2012 23:06

I've already offered my ch back garden. It can chew on my greener than green grass Wink
