To think: if you can fly first class, you shouldn't have a council house?

Facebook friends of mine (friends of RL friends really) making lots of comments this week about their impending holiday to Mauritius on which they'll be flying first class and staying in a 5 star hotel.

This couple have lived in a council house for many years (no kids yet), though this year so far she has got a new (not brand new, a year or two old but still v nice) BMW and he has a new Ducati.

One of their friends has commented on FB "Wow, did you win the lottery?!" and the wife replied "no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday".

First class flights to Mauritius are £4k each. A week in a 5 star hotel must be at least £2k and probably more. That's £10k for a week's holiday. AIBU to think that if people can squirrel away that much money for a holiday, they shouldn't be living in a bloody council house subsidised by taxes from the rest of us?

"no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday".

There is your answer there. yABU.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 19/09/2012 22:49

"no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday"
So they have no children, but have savings? Maybe they've spent years coming to terms with infertility and have decided to blow their life savings (which could be what? ten years worth? fifteen?) on their new car and bike and the holiday of a lifetime. Who the bloody hell are you, or anyone else, to sneer and cast aspersions on them for doing so?
Are only people on benefits/below a certain income threshold/with no savings allowed to be council tenants now? There's a lovely incentive for people to save up/come off benefits...
YABU.

5inthebed · 19/09/2012 22:49

If they are earning a wage then they will be paying rent for the council house. You don't have to be living on benefits to get a council house.

And people in council houses are allowed holidays, cars and motorbikes you know. And goats.

Redbindy · 19/09/2012 22:50

op what makes you think local authority housing is subsidised? If you think it's such a good deal get on the list.

LST · 19/09/2012 22:50

kim I pay full rent. If my circumstances change I'm not going anywhere.

LST · 19/09/2012 22:51

YY usual

5inthebed · 19/09/2012 22:52

As usual, erm, Usual is spot on!

TraineeBabyCatcher · 19/09/2012 22:52

I would say that i disagree with the majority. On face value, assuming that what you have said is a good example of their financial standing, then i would say there is no need for them to be in council housing- as it is designed to support those in need.

However, you do not necessarily know whether there holiday was paid for by family money, inheritence, etc as well as some saving up.

Me and dp drive (relatively) good cars, nicely done out house, we had a nice holiday this year but we (well me atm, us soon) couldnt afford to living in private or bought accomodation. People may look at me in the same way but they dont know how i fund anything.

topknob · 19/09/2012 22:54

ducati & council house pmsl !

Rubirosa · 19/09/2012 22:54

Building social housing is subsidised by taxpayers, but rent isn't subsidised. The rents more than cover upkeep, staffing costs etc.

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 19/09/2012 22:54

Wow. The most definite YABU I have read in ages.
She has saved for a long time as you said yourself. No fags, no takeaway, no wine? No new clothes? No new shoes?

Big time YABU.

5inthebed · 19/09/2012 22:55

Council houses are not to support those in need!

Rubirosa · 19/09/2012 22:55

Trainee in what way is council housing designed for those in need? It was always intended to be secure, affordable housing for ordinary working people.

maillotjaune · 19/09/2012 22:56

But who will look after the goat while they are in Mauritius, 5inabed?

OP they saved up. Good on them. YABU.

LST · 19/09/2012 22:56

Argh threads like these piss me off!!

larks35 · 19/09/2012 22:56

OP, YANBU to be jealous of your "friend's friends" forth-coming holiday, I'm a bit jealous too! But YABVU to think that because they have chosen to save some money to have this holiday of a lifetime, they should suddenly lose the right to their home! I wish I had put my name on the housing list years back, but I didn't. Others did.

LST · 19/09/2012 22:57

mail I have room for more goats here! They can send it over my way Grin

GranToAirMissiles · 19/09/2012 22:57

Just been reading Laurence Rees book Auschwitz, and seeing how the same themes that led to it crop up today (denying right to life of disabled people, racism, and now this).

EchoBitch · 19/09/2012 22:57

You can't get a council house here for love nor money, the waiting list is forever.
