To think: if you can fly first class, you shouldn't have a council house?

Facebook friends of mine (friends of RL friends really) making lots of comments this week about their impending holiday to Mauritius on which they'll be flying first class and staying in a 5 star hotel.

This couple have lived in a council house for many years (no kids yet), though this year so far she has got a new (not brand new, a year or two old but still v nice) BMW and he has a new Ducati.

One of their friends has commented on FB "Wow, did you win the lottery?!" and the wife replied "no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday".

First class flights to Mauritius are £4k each. A week in a 5 star hotel must be at least £2k and probably more. That's £10k for a week's holiday. AIBU to think that if people can squirrel away that much money for a holiday, they shouldn't be living in a bloody council house subsidised by taxes from the rest of us?

I don't understand why the OP has got her knickers in a twist over this.

I rented privately for 2 years when I left home at the age of 25. I bought a mews house in London some 15 years ago on my own. It was a real struggle to pay the mortgage in those early years. I think I have had four one week holidays and four little breaks in those fifteen years. I have never been outside Europe. Doesn't bother me. I don't understand why people get so upset. Live and let live.

Just because someone lives in a council house doesnt mean they dont work or are scroungers off the state...sounds to me like totally jel..try keeping your nose out of other peoples business....theres always one in the street isnt there! Haha

GolfOscarLimaDelta · 20/09/2012 21:36

shewho I don't think it's anyone's place to 'mind' what type of holiday anyone takes!

VinegarTits · 20/09/2012 21:40

she got her knickers in a twist because she is quite happy for them to live in a council house if they could afford a holiday at centerparcs (expensive as it is) because they are, in her eyes, still beneath her, but for them to save up and book first class, wooo now that brings them up a level, to her level, and she cant have that as she sees herself as way better than they are, how dare they!

mamloves · 20/09/2012 21:42

Also...i luckily, live in a lovely big old victorian mid terrace flat....non council estate..some people would say its one of the councils "hidden gems"...the rest of the street is private with scandalous prices...i work, have holidays...so i guess im in the same bracket as who uour talking about...theres a battleaxe woman in my street and she hates the fact that i only pay around 35/40% to what she does..but hey a didnt actually think people gave a fuck......anyone fancy the maldives?Grin

Why should it be means tested? Its never been a consideration except here!

Social housing is used to re house families fleeing domestic abuse. It us also used for OAP's and the disabled. Could you means test a pensioner who has substantial savings? Social housing is adapted to suit disability of it's tenant. Disabled people or their spouse, do work. Suppose they earned over the threshold? They should be thrown out to the mercy of a landlord who is not under any obligation to adapt the premises?

ofcourse they could be telling people thats what they are doing but actually going to a place others may think is more suited to there standing.

people do that sometimes.

vinegar, it was back in 2002 cant remember what it was called obviously it covered the area i worked in, twas a map red dots= location of crime, green dot= offenders residence.

I have only ever come across council house envy on MN!

BlackberryIce · 20/09/2012 21:51

No no, you want it means tested, then you need to deal with the OAP's and disabled...., don't dodge it. A threshold for ALL...

What would it be KIM?

VinegarTits · 20/09/2012 21:54

maybe they arent going anywhere, and are posting status updates to wind her up because they know the op looks down her nose at them Grin

mamloves · 20/09/2012 21:55

Hahahahahahaha...once again,thankyou

GoldShip · 20/09/2012 21:55

'Week in skeggy and a push bike OK with you Goldship?'

Stop being obtuse. There's people living in hostels and terrible conditions because we haven't got enough social housing, because it's being abused by people who can afford private but want to save money for extravagant holidays.

I don't blame thm, but that doesn't make in right

And there's absolutely no envy because I'm happy where I am, I just think it's unfair for those who are in dire need. Who can't get a private home. They haven't got a choice.

These people have.

Goldship - i'll say again. It's my family who I car about. I pay my way. We're saving up to take DS to Disney. He's 10mo at the moment and we will have enough by the time he is about 10yo. Is that ok with you? Or shall I go ahead and put my name down for a ridiculously overpriced private rental house?

LST · 20/09/2012 21:59

Kim... The elderly and disabled don't automatically go to the top of the list! It doesn't work like that.

You sound very mixed up. Are you like this generally?
