To think: if you can fly first class, you shouldn't have a council house?

Facebook friends of mine (friends of RL friends really) making lots of comments this week about their impending holiday to Mauritius on which they'll be flying first class and staying in a 5 star hotel.

This couple have lived in a council house for many years (no kids yet), though this year so far she has got a new (not brand new, a year or two old but still v nice) BMW and he has a new Ducati.

One of their friends has commented on FB "Wow, did you win the lottery?!" and the wife replied "no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday".

First class flights to Mauritius are £4k each. A week in a 5 star hotel must be at least £2k and probably more. That's £10k for a week's holiday. AIBU to think that if people can squirrel away that much money for a holiday, they shouldn't be living in a bloody council house subsidised by taxes from the rest of us?

That's was to vinegar

shesariver · 20/09/2012 16:24

You could have 2 first class stamps for all I care, do you realise how boastful and up yourself that makes you sound?

VinegarTits · 20/09/2012 16:26

i have one degree, i didnt need to go back a second time round Wink

Real intelligence is to know the extent of one's ignorance

Abitwobblynow · 20/09/2012 16:27

The contempt for council house tenants on MN, quite frankly makes me fucking sick.

The blind hatred for the middle classes without any understanding of exactly what they contribute to our society and why their values have value, quite frankly makes me fucking weary.

Beantheremyself · 20/09/2012 16:28

I like Centre-Parcs.

Perhaps some sort of branding method for Council house owners?

ByTheWay1 · 20/09/2012 16:28

Well, I'm also educated AND a Daily Mail reader - but think you are being a bit UR OP - as others have said, being in a council house does not mean you can't have savings/inherit money/etc

What anyone spends their own money on is nobody else's business.

Why do you care really?

Mexxo · 20/09/2012 16:28

Obviously, LST, I disagree with you on the common sense point, hence the thread. It's common sense that if you can afford luxury items and holidays, you should stop taking a state benefit so that someone who needs it can have it.

However on the education/intelligence point, as a minimum, I can use an apostrophe to distinguish "you're"/"your", but probably am also fairly intelligent as I've managed to get myself into a position in life where I can pay for stuff I want myself. Oh, and I have lots and lots of clients who pay lots and lots for my intelligent advice as well. They can't all be wrong.

Didn't "need" to go back, vt, chose to. Career change you see. So I could earn more.

I not saying I'm intelligent though am I ducky. I wouldn't be scrounging off all your hard working tax payers money would I if I'd got degrees Wink

VinegarTits · 20/09/2012 16:31

what do the middle class contribute? Hmm

i dont put myself into a 'class', but my my ex claims to be MC, he contributes nothing, hes claims JSA

ByTheWay1 · 20/09/2012 16:31

Sorry - did I miss a post - I thought the issue was they were living in a council house, not claiming benefits?

Abitwobblynow · 20/09/2012 16:31

PS I have never had any opinion of people who live in council houses. I have, however, a LOT of opinion about the inefficient, wasteful way in which government goes about benefits of all kind. Unfortunately, people don't like wrapping their minds around this very real problem. It's easier just to insult it seems.

sixlostmonkeys · 20/09/2012 16:32

You'll have no clients at all if your boss finds out how long you spend here posting shite ;)

oh, and who is taking state benefits? You've lost me?

Since when has a council house been a state benefit?!

Mexxo · 20/09/2012 16:34

My DP left school at 16, he hasn't got a degree. Or A levels. He manages to support himself just fine.

It's not about education, it's about mindset. But having been called "stupid", the fact that I am educated to degree level is relevant.

OP you're not helping your argument by getting into a slanging match with people who disagree with you (however rude they may be).

I, and many others have agreed with you in principle, but to be honest you are losing sympathy by engaging with people who can't have a reasoned debate without insults. You are as bad as they are.

Rise above it everyone and discuss with reasoned arguments.

LST · 20/09/2012 16:35

And I find it laughable op your (sorry you're) pointing out my spelling errors in your argument GrinGrinGrin

Mexxo · 20/09/2012 16:35

Since it was provided by the state, "shesariver*, for lower than commercial rents

TerraNotSoFirma · 20/09/2012 16:36

If you are renting a house from the council are you considered to be 'on benefits' then?

I never called you stupid. And I manage to support myself fine thank you Hmm

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 20/09/2012 16:38

Why would you rathe rave your taxes paying for those who need it OP? because while some of 'those who need it' will be people who are in horrible circumstance because of illness, disability, domestic violence, child abuse etc, plenty of them will just be girls in their late teens and early twenties who got pregnant before they should have done. Plenty will be couples who had more children than they can afford. Plenty will be long term unemployed and LNG term benefits claimants.

The social housing system is not the benefits system. They are separate things. The benefit system was set up to be there as a safety net in times of genuine hardship. The housing system was set up to provide the entire population with access to affordable housing.

I pay plenty of tax, and I'd much rather it went into a pot that worked for everyone, rather than those who can't be bjothered to do it for themselves.

VinegarTits · 20/09/2012 16:38

OP you mean your living in sin with a and uneducated man and your illegitamate children Shock

you do suprise me
