To think: if you can fly first class, you shouldn't have a council house?

Facebook friends of mine (friends of RL friends really) making lots of comments this week about their impending holiday to Mauritius on which they'll be flying first class and staying in a 5 star hotel.

This couple have lived in a council house for many years (no kids yet), though this year so far she has got a new (not brand new, a year or two old but still v nice) BMW and he has a new Ducati.

One of their friends has commented on FB "Wow, did you win the lottery?!" and the wife replied "no we just saved a long time for our dream holiday".

First class flights to Mauritius are £4k each. A week in a 5 star hotel must be at least £2k and probably more. That's £10k for a week's holiday. AIBU to think that if people can squirrel away that much money for a holiday, they shouldn't be living in a bloody council house subsidised by taxes from the rest of us?

If they're in a Council house and they want to fly they should only be allowed so if they're strapped to the wings. Imagine fully deserving first-class passengers mixing with the proles?

It's the pettiness that gets me. Why worry what other people are doing.

But fair enough Facebook is a true reflection of people's lives, completely true, not biased in anyway.

Petty,petty,petty.

its not 'much' cheaper goldship, as someone said earlier these days it is more in line with private rent, i know because i used to live in one, now i rent privately, they will still be paying income tax and council tax, they are contributing like the rest of us who work, they deserve the right to decide what they do with their earnings

do these friends of your know you fell this way about them op?

and this - 'I have very nice holidays, live in my own home and drive my own absolutely lovely car. I am well paid for doing a job which many people would love to have. My DCs want for nothing and our life is all-round pretty damn fantastic' makes you sound horrible

urgh

bowerbird · 20/09/2012 15:49

VT I don't know where you live, but in my part of London there is a HUGE difference between the private/public sector housing. People pay twice as much to rent privately. Even without any benefit claiming, the state subsidises council housing, considerably.

Why exactly does that make me sound horrible, vt? Why is it that you find it perfectly ok, if not positively laudable, for the people I've written about to tell everyone on FB about their expensive holiday, previous 3 holidays this year, new car and new bike, but for me to say in this thread that I have a good job, nice holidays and a good life all paid for with no help from the state makes me "sound horrible"? Is it better to vaunt your lifestyle if you can't actually fund it all yourself then?

and what usualsuspect said Biscuit

sixlostmonkeys · 20/09/2012 16:00

No vt, I wouldn't be complaining if they were going to CentreParcs. That's kind of the whole point.

bowerbird · 20/09/2012 16:01

Who or what is council housing for? Seriously.

Should priority be given to people on low incomes? Recent immigrants/refugees? People who can prove community/family ties? The elderly or vulnerable young people?

Thing is, there's such a vast need for cheaper, or at least more reasonable housing. Many people are in desperate circumstances, and stories like these make me think that perhaps it's unfair that council housing is available to people with two luxury cars and the ability to save for a five star holiday.

It doesn't make me a Daily Mail reader.

And I would never go on holiday to CP because it's very expensive for what it is, so I'm told by everyone I know who's been there. And full of braying hoorays in half term as well!

Well you've done a good job of arguing the toss over every detail on this thread, so if you consider me stupid, you've clearly let your standards slip.

(I'm not stupid though, I've got two first class degrees. T
So there.)

And why should people slave away for years in private rentals to save up for deposits on places when they could pay half the rent on subsidised places and cruise around the world on holidays? No wonder the country has no money!

Well dont - wait your 10 years and get a council house in a shitty area then! People living in council houses getting the blame for the country having no money? Well why not eh, they get the blame for everything else thats wrong with the country!! Fact is even earning what I do as a Nurse I have nothing left at the end of the month, and certainly couldnt afford a private rent (and thats if I could find one in my small town) - so will I give up my job and find a prviate rent and then get Housing benefit to pay the rent then? yeh that really will save the country money Hmm

LST · 20/09/2012 16:22

Precisely my point Wink
