What's with the use of the word 'cupcake' everywhere now?! It's not a cupcake. It's a fecking bun. With fancy icing on it.
Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest! Grin

Most of the cupcakes that can be bought are vile. Yeah they look pretty but they are generally a dry and hard cake covered with 6 inches of bland icing.

They have nothing on fairy cakes :)

SarryB · 19/09/2012 12:36

This bun thing is weird. Buns don't have paper cases.

TudorJess · 19/09/2012 12:36

I'd go for a mug-cake - sounds much heartier somehow!

SarryB · 19/09/2012 12:37

Forgot to add. I'm drooling right now, and trying to think if we have the ingredients in the cupboard to make cakes.

ENormaSnob · 19/09/2012 12:38

A cupcake is a bun with buttercream icing.

madmomma · 19/09/2012 12:39

now I desperately need a bun. With icing on it. (but it's still a bun)

valiumredhead · 19/09/2012 12:41

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bun

nickeldaisical · 19/09/2012 12:44

it is a fairy cake.

even worse that there's a whole design of Mothercare clothing that insists that girl are cupcakes. Angry

nickeldaisical · 19/09/2012 12:47

fairy cakes are not fucking sponges either - they are creamed cakes

sponges have little or no fat in them.

threeOrangesocksmorgan · 19/09/2012 12:48

fairy cakes

valiumredhead · 19/09/2012 12:50

A Victoria sponge has tons of fat in it.

OTheHugeManatee · 19/09/2012 12:50

Well, we always called them fairy cakes in my house but I see I'm overruled Grin

Agree about the excess of buttercream on a modern cupcake

madmomma · 19/09/2012 12:50

Grin at valium getting the big guns out!

I understood cupcakes were 'invented' or at least made popular on Friends and that's how the fad started but I don't watch Friends so can't confirm.

valiumredhead · 19/09/2012 12:51

Oh I fucked my link up - it was a pic of butterfly cakes Grin

OTheHugeManatee · 19/09/2012 12:51

IIRC from my cake making days it's Genoese sponges (where you beat the egg over a bain marie and fold the flour into it when fluffy) that have little or no fat. Victoria sponges and pound cake type cake mix is usually about 25% butter.

MarysBeard · 19/09/2012 12:52

YABU - it's just a label. Surely "fairy cake" is vastly more twee. To me it's a technical term, a cupcake is bigger than a fairy cake & smaller than a muffin - though much more like a fairy cake than a muffin in recipe.

Also muffins can be bread & contain yeast of course, confusingly!

I don't like icing very much and the cake itself is pretty plain, so yes I probably would choose something else to eat.

YABU to be irritated by them though, how strange. It rather sounds like you are just trying to distance yourself from something which has become popular, because you are above all that, not like all those other sheep o_O

valiumredhead · 19/09/2012 12:53

Correct Manatee Grin

valiumredhead · 19/09/2012 12:53

Muffins have no icing on them.

squoosh · 19/09/2012 12:54

Hate all the cupcakes wankery, not that I won't scoff one if it's served up to me.

What's wrong with good old fairy cakes? Fairy cakes are to red squirrels as cupcakes are to grey squirrels. Big, fat, American invaders, killing off indigenous (cake) species!

valiumredhead · 19/09/2012 12:54

There's no distance between me and a cupcake...unfortunately

madmomma · 19/09/2012 12:55

Well excuuuuse me valium but I have eaten an iced muffin. From a proper muffin specialist. So there

MarysBeard · 19/09/2012 12:56

Once again, a cupcake is NOT a fairy cake. Duh. It's about twice the size for starters. If I turned up to a birthday party where they had specified cupcakes with fairy cakes I assure you they would not be amused...

valiumredhead · 19/09/2012 12:56

You haven't mad you have eaten an iced cake. So there.
