to think my friend is being very very silly

right my friend has not work in 6 years and has a 5 year old (don't want to debate the rights and wrongs of her not working)

she is now being required to find a job, she has said she is is only willing to work term time because of the children which is fair enough i guess but the thing i find vexing is the fact she is not willing to work in any school out of her local area (confused)

there is a opening at my child's school for a dinner lady but i live in the next LA TO HER BUT ITS ONLY 3.9 MILES AWAY on one direct bus #
she says she needs to be local in case her child takes ill but i fear the job center its losing patience with her and her money will be stopped if she carries on being so inflexible

she has no qualifications and were in tough times so i don't fell she can be to picky i think if she passes this up she is crazy

what can i do to convince her

i fear she thinks things are as they were when you can refuse work and i think its allot better she gets a job that suits her then them getting fed up giving her something or just stopping her money

i have also asked her to find out how long she has to look before the money will stop and she wont ask

i am worried because i love her dearly

"An eight mile round trip per day sounds like a bloody long way to travel for a "midday meals supervisor" job tbf. "

Really? Where do people live that there are lots of jobs within a smaller radius than that?

WorraLiberty · 18/09/2012 09:45

Would the wages even cover the bus fare?

Am I missing something here? I don't understand why some people are questioning this? Confused

cantspel · 18/09/2012 09:50

by the sounds of that job description she should be snapping their hands off for it but if she is stupid enough to let it pass her by there are plenty more who wont.

Hotcoffeeisamemory · 18/09/2012 09:51

Lunch time assistants do. It work 4 hours a day. No way is that job 20 hours a week.

Hotcoffeeisamemory · 18/09/2012 09:51

Do not. Gah.

Fishwife1949 · 18/09/2012 09:53

i just feel really gutted i think she is making a huge mistake especially as she has no qualifications and not sure she really understands how tough out there it is.

and i don't think may term time only jobs come up very often
but i guess she is her own woman and i should just be there when it goes tits up

OP posts:
GoldShip · 18/09/2012 09:53

I think she's jus proved the job is 20 hours a day.

allthefun · 18/09/2012 09:54

Yep think this post is bollocks too. There isn't one lunchtime job on the Hampshire schools website that is close to 12 hours let alone 20.

Who needs a dinner lady at 2.30pm?

GoldShip · 18/09/2012 09:54

Week*

Fishwife1949 · 18/09/2012 09:56

she very focused on working at a school near by her child's but i think the chance of a job coming up right by her child's school or even in it are very slim

and she seems blind to any other options

Fishwife1949 · 18/09/2012 09:58

allthefun just to note my child's school has a staggered day so the whole school dose not have lunch at the same time

and also i could be wrong but the 6th form have a cafe style thing that is open all day and its a separate building from the main school but on the smae site

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 18/09/2012 09:59

YANBU OP, that job looks like a goodun.

However, she's still going to need some sort of child care as the term times and Inset days will vary to her own child's school.

cantspel · 18/09/2012 09:59

I dont know why people are so quick to call the op a troll. At my sons school all the lunchtime assistants work 4 hours a day. They have their own kitchen and do all their own prep and cooking so it is not just a matter of working for the hour that the canteen is open.
I think people are thinking of the old fashioned dinerlady who used to supervise the play ground rather than what the job advertised is.

furrygoldone · 18/09/2012 10:00

I thought it was considered bad form to call people trolls rather than report them. Sounds like a perfectly feasible job to me.

OP YANBU to worry about your friend but other than tell her about the job there is nothing more you can do to help her.

Fishwife1949 · 18/09/2012 10:00

any way thanks to those who gave advice and to those who think i am a troll then i am not sure why you bothered replying
