to think what the fuck is going on in this world

ok so I must have my head in the sand. I think I came across a cartoon that unfortunantly sums what I have been doing these last 8 years ( add children to the mix ) :
www.guardian.co.uk/books/cartoon/2012/jul/20/cartoonist-worldview-luke-pearson

I have flicked onto the news and have been overwhelmed by what the hell is happening to people around the world- tonight it is Syria- what the heck - the house is bombed, they drag out two girls with a 3yr old boy still in the rubble - no emergency services and the end is not in sight.

What the FUCKING FUCK . I just don't know what to do. Somehow swearing and mumsnet and asking AIBU is adding to irony of it all?

Can you do a clickable link ( I am on the phone so can't copy and paste the link)

katkouta · 17/09/2012 22:18

I see images of the atrocities in Syria every day Sad YANBU. I wish I could share the pictures as most people seem to have no idea, I just can't bring myself to do it. The last one I saw was a decapitated toddler, in my news feed on FB, along with all the photos of the other children staring school....

not done clickable links before but one of these should work.

*starting

katkouta · 17/09/2012 22:21

Brilliant cartoon BTW

AngryFeet · 17/09/2012 22:22

Same things that have always happened. Lots of terrible things and lots of wonderful things. Difference nowadays is we have the technology to see all of it and the focus of the media is 99% bad stuff.

McHappyPants2012 · 17/09/2012 22:24

Thank you :)

Those cartoons are horrible :( why do people want to joke about other people suffering. I just do not find them funny

DoMeDon · 17/09/2012 22:25

YAB a bit U - people get on with their lives day to day. If you want to help you can, in fact stop MNing and get on it.

vis · 17/09/2012 22:25

Katkouta- that is horrific

It does not seem right.

I am busy looking at the headlines --- thinking if the new exams replacing the GCSE's are going to effect my children....then i think of those mothers/fathers .....I currently feel motivated to do something..what the hell can I do- other than well that is the awful truth- avoid it - avoid the hurt by putting my head " in the sand"- not watching the news / not reading the papers.

I don't think it's supposed to be funny, McHappyPants2012 - I don't think it's intended to be read as a joke

McHappyPants2012 · 17/09/2012 22:26

But the cartoons do make think

vis · 17/09/2012 22:28

DoMeDon

throw me a bone..what do you suggest..seriously I would be more than happy to hear from anyone who has practical ideas.

OP posts:
katkouta · 17/09/2012 22:28

McHappy I don't think they are intended to be funny. I think it is supposed to show 'head in the sand syndrome' of all that is going on in the world.

katkouta · 17/09/2012 22:32

vis that really isn't the worst unfortunately Sad You can donate, protest, but apart from that, just lie in bed at night crying and feeling helpless..(that's what I do many nights..)

McHappyPants2012 · 17/09/2012 22:35

Ok i have got the wrong end of the stick

DoMeDon · 17/09/2012 22:35

Well is there a specific thing you want to help with? You could start campaigning, marching. I am intending to volunteer locally as I have a big child protection bug eating me. You could give it all up and go where the problem is, many truly inspirational people have done it. Opening orphanages, leaving their lives to DO something. My friend takes his annual leave to build schools abroad. Just seems pointless starting a fred about the pointlessness of it all!!

DoMeDon I very much doubt that anyone from UK would be able to enter Syria at the moment!
I do understand your point; it has crossed my mind, but selfishly I want my children to grow up with their parents.

It's not pointless, people need to vent.

DoMeDon · 17/09/2012 22:45

Yes but there are atrocities all over, every day. It isn't selfish to have your children grow up with you but plenty can be done from here.

Venting is a choice, acting a better one.

vis · 17/09/2012 22:49

DoMeDon

the thread has been started because that is how I feel. I am on the cusp of making change- wanting to change how I interact with the wider world out there.

It takes some courage to admit you have had your head in the sand and been selfishly thinking about you and your family only.

I do my part in the Uk with work with a charity. I have little "daytime" left and currently have evening time- hence ta da the post...I could write letters? ..The impression I get is if the Mps think it is a vote winner then they will take on the voice and then maybe as a UK entity the government can echo this. Ie tyr ot get a big mass of people thinking the same thing......but then Amnesty International whom i support ..well I could support them more...raise money for them.....freeflow thinking here !

You chose to start a thread in AIBU - I responded. Majority are with you OP. This thread isn't about me so I'll leave you to it. I believe less thinking more action is the key. Genuinely good luck with your life change Smile

katkouta · 17/09/2012 22:58

Hi vis (see what I did there?) Grin
Human Care Foundation are a great help to Syria, here is the link to the page on fb (I hope)

vis · 17/09/2012 23:03

thanks DoMeDom - how ever i would suggest that more thinking less action may have prevented alot of the misery going on this world.

However the sentiment that you are pushing which is " get of your ass " - is valid in my case !
