AIBU to demand this couple stop smoking and report them

So I was in the garage today when a car pulled in with a mum and dad in the front, two toddlers and a baby in the back.

Windows closed (not that I think that makes a difference) and both were smoking.

As man got out of car (still smoking) I said to him that he had to put the cigarette out as he was risking all our lives and that he shouldn't be smoking in a confined space with his kids anyway!

He just put the fag back in the car in the ashtray, while his Mrs lit up another cigarette laughing!

So reported them to garage who went out and told them to put them out. They were kicking off t high heaven as I walked out.

Anyway when told DH he said while he agreed In principle he felt I was being unreasonable by "getting involved" as could have got nasty and I'm seven months pregnant.

Should I have just kept my mouth shut?

YANBU that's shocking! Shock

Thingiebob · 14/09/2012 19:03

Yanbu!

WhoWhatWhereWhen · 14/09/2012 19:05

I know It's illegal in some parts of the world to smoke with children in the car, what's the situation in the UK?

DowagersHump · 14/09/2012 19:05

Gosh - do you usually spend so much time peering into other people's cars? I have no idea who is sitting in the car at the next pump to me. They could be smoking a camberwell carrot for all I know

Nice touch about being seven months' pregnant

Birdsgottafly · 14/09/2012 19:06

If it was a garage that is part of a large chain and the staff should have noticed before you did, i would complain higher, tbh.

Their actions could have effected you, so you were right to report them.

SauvignonBlanche · 14/09/2012 19:07

Poor kids! Sad

tittytittyhanghang · 14/09/2012 19:08

YANBU, but only for the fact that they were smoking at a garage, have they never watched Zoolander :). If it was because there was kids in the back, however unpleasant it is, none of your business imo.

TraineeBabyCatcher · 14/09/2012 19:09

You did the right thing. They were causing a potential danger.

People who smoke in cars with children disgust me.

Birdsgottafly · 14/09/2012 19:10

"do you usually spend so much time peering into other people's cars"

I don't understand why you wouldn't be aware of everything that is happening around you, but that could be down to where you live or where you have lived, i suppose.

If you live in a high crime city, you 'clock' everyone and everything, or you pay for not doing so.

LadyMargolotta · 14/09/2012 19:11

They were smoking at a petrol station? That's incredibly dangerous. You were right to say something. Very unpleasant for the children as well.

picnicbasketcase · 14/09/2012 19:11

Very dangerous behaviour re the garage so YANBU there. Smoking in cars with children is not yet illegal though regardless of how reprehensible it is.

PowerDresser · 14/09/2012 19:12

The whole reason of having a no smoking rule at a garage (presumably a petrol station in this case) is that drips of petrol on the ground could catch light from a cigarette's ash. This is one of the few Health and Safety rules with which I wholeheartedly agree.

Rowanhart · 14/09/2012 19:13

Ha. Dowagers what a bizarre post! Was it you puffing away today?!

'Nice touch' about being seven months pregnant? Feel free to check my posts in pregnancy over last, who I'd say, five and a half months if you want Grin

Maybe I'm just naturally more observant, ey....

Yanbu to report them for smoking in the petrol station. Although, given the reaction that could have happened I ser why your dh is concerned about you approaching them direct.
Yabu to comment about them smoking in the car. sites shit but not illegal and they are their kids. Would you look through someones living room windows and have a go because they were smoking in their home.
Lots of people will disagree with things you do as a parent, I imagine you wouldn't be happy if people started telling you so in the street.

DowagersHump · 14/09/2012 19:14

I've lived in inner London for 25 years, birds (south, east, north). I don't stare into people's cars when I'm filling up.

I notice the person who's doing the filling but once they've got out the car. There is an air of ... how shall I say ... afterschool club about the OP

Hopeforever · 14/09/2012 19:15

Don't think it is banned here, but there are noises being made about it happening. The science behind the amount of smoke that kids inhale second hand in a confined space like a car show how bad it is for them

Well done OP

JollyCoddler · 14/09/2012 19:16

A petrol station garage? Or a fixing cars garage?

Birdsgottafly · 14/09/2012 19:18

You don't have to stare to see who is driving and to notice if they are smoking, you glance.

DowagersHump · 14/09/2012 19:18

Ok, if this is genuine, yes, you should have reported him for smoking on the forecourt but the rest of it is none of your business. Better?

I hope you don't use your phone when going to the garage either.

Rowanhart · 14/09/2012 19:19

I think I've just been accused of trolling for the first time!

I feel like I'm officially a full card carrying MNetter. Wink

Haha. As I said, feel free to check my previous posts and threads.

DowagersHump · 14/09/2012 19:20

Birds - I'm not talking about the driver, like I said. Do you clock exactly how many people are in the back seat and what age they are? That's slightly odd IMO.

Rowanhart · 14/09/2012 19:21

A petrol garage Birds.

Obviously I'm strange as I tend to glance around at other people all the time. But then I'm from Oop North Dowagers. Up here we even occasionally smile at people in the street and talk to strangers on public transport...

OP posts:
JumpingThroughMoreHoops · 14/09/2012 19:22

Who are you going to report him too?

Bit late to tell the petrol station cashier

And as smoking isn't illegal - I sincerely doubt anyone else will give a toss

TraineeBabyCatcher · 14/09/2012 19:22

A fleeting glance is enough to see how many people are in a car and a rough idea of their age.

QuickQuickSloe · 14/09/2012 19:23

I think it is illegal in Wales. You are right that it is disgusting but If it ever happens again just tell the garage. Iwouldntwant to get into a confrontation with people who are that stupid!
