Urgh just Urgh is how I have been left feeling so i am going to leave a smiley face as a post to say I believe everyone is free to make their own choices in regard to working or not working after children. Also that I'm so grateful our foremothers fought for us to have the

There is a model on This Morning with full on grey hair :)

GilbGeekette · 14/09/2012 11:16

I've educated myself, Super. Also, I recently used the 'word' at a very nice party, full of DHs lovely friends and there was a stunned silence. Now I have a new way to cause mischief Wink

Missed the other thread Confused

What was it? Someone having a pop at sahm?

HecateHarshPants · 14/09/2012 11:24

Amen.

When we hear the same sort of crap being chucked at fathers, then and only then will I accept it has anything to do with actual views on parenthood rather than being yet another way to take a pot shot at women.

cheekybarsteward · 14/09/2012 11:36

everlong, it was a thread saying why would you have a child if you want to work full time by choice. 'Choice' being the operative word here

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 14/09/2012 11:47

Thanks cheeky

Oh right one of those types of nice friendly threads.

Smile Quite agree, there's no need for it.
naturalbaby · 14/09/2012 12:48

eh what eh?? I've missed it but will join in with Smile's and Brew.

I recently found MN had got to a point where all the typical debates had been done to death and everyone had reached a hippie happy style understanding and acceptance of each other's parenting choices, then a whole load of random stuff gets twisted and turned into the old debates again. There were even some interesting discussions in the place of boring debates .

Where can one go for interesting discussions these days then? My 4yr old isn't quite up to discussing the pros and cons of my work options.

I reckon it takes all kinds of folks to make the world go round. I'd sometimes kill for a dedicated work space though!

kerala · 14/09/2012 12:59

I find it slightly embarrassing that adults have problems with the fact other adults have made slightly different life choices. This is a debate that manages to be both boring and offensive (to both "sides") quite impressive I suppose.

SAHM and I like to think I'm too young to be grey yet though my mums friend was fully grey by 21

redwineformethanks · 14/09/2012 15:25

Smile - with one small caveat - some women have always worked (in service, in mills etc) through necessity, not choice.

I think anyone who slags off other peoples' choices isn't secure and happy in their own.

Smile for all those who do what they want to do and comiserations to those whose circumstances force them to either to WOH or SAH when they don't want to.

trixie123 · 14/09/2012 15:35

Smile This is a subject that a friend and I have to agree to disagree on. She is a SAHM and really thinks that if you can't afford to or don't want to stay at home with your young children then why have them. I work part time (but more than I NEED to for financial reasons because I enjoy it) so whenever the topic arises, we just skirt around it as we know we have very different views.

Proudnscary · 14/09/2012 15:44

Trixie - I also enjoy working (FT) and I think it's sad when most women on MN seem to feel the need to say 'I only work for the money'.

Maybe that's true in many cases, but maybe some are afraid to admit 'I like working and I don't want to be a SAHM'.

Your friend is quite unkind and hurtful to voice those views to you. I think some people don't actually understand how much working mums can and do see of their kids. There can be this 'Oh you don't see your kids during the week do you?' and I want to say 'well actually I see them for 2 hours in the morning, 3 hours in the evening and at least once in the wee hours for something or other'!
