Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

I would quite happily like to have all my hair white (as the roots are), but unless I shave my head then it wont happen as I am not going to spend months walking around looking like a badger!

Trazzletoes · 13/09/2012 11:25

My DAunt went grey at 14. She has always had gorgeously beautiful silver hair. Never dyed it, never needed to because it looks fab. She has never looked older than she is. Or old at all, tbh. YABU.

Fakebook · 13/09/2012 11:25

I want to know how "good" the OP looks.

Put up a pic OP, I want to see what you look like.

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 13/09/2012 11:26

Just had to double check this thread was AIBU. Of course it is.

Silly me. Who'd have thought you could give an opinion.

ClippedPhoenix · 13/09/2012 11:26

I consider my hair one of my best features, it's a wonderful silver grey colour Grin

WelshMaenad · 13/09/2012 11:28

Far better than, say, that dual layered blonde/black ridiculousness that makes woman look like chavvy badgers.

Empusa · 13/09/2012 11:28

"Yes ok some women do it by choice. I've never met one tbf."

You have now.

Just been googling how to dye hait white/grey/silver. Think I know what colour my hair is going next! I want to look like this!

I think women who don't look nice should have to stay at home. What is the point of being female if you can't be pretty as a picture . It should be a valid reason for absence at work 'I can't come in today. I appear to be plain'

Just think of all the lie ins we could get out of this. I'm glad the OP brought this extremely important issue to the fore this morning Biscuit

TheBigJessie · 13/09/2012 11:32

Yes, we must all be eternal Barbie dolls. Never aging. Never changing.

I've never looked at someone's grey hair and thought, "she should dye that". I have seen a lot of bad DIY peroxides, though...

Grey hair doesn't even reliably positively correlate with age. I know people who got them at 16, and people who haven't got them at 50+. If humans spent less time desperately trying to spot patterns and form stereotypes, this thread might never have been posted.

superwhizzynewlaptop · 13/09/2012 11:32

Have not read all replies but wow what a horrible OP. My hair has gone from a lovely coppery brown to dull brown and grey/silver after eight rounds of chemotherapy.

I have better things to do than put chemicals and gunk dye on my hair thank you.

I am 40, not sure if that qualifies as young or old to OP, but obviously I should be spending more time on vacuous crap such as my appearance rather than much more important things in life...

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 13/09/2012 11:33

I haven't met anyone in RL is what I mean. But I'm sure you knew that.

None of my friends, neighbours, infact anybody that I actually know around my age let's their hair just go grow.

Pag was joking a bit I think Confused

nailak · 13/09/2012 11:33

What about a relatively young man? Do you see why they would do ot?

Empusa · 13/09/2012 11:34

super I didn't realise chemo could do that. Hope you are doing ok (as can be)?

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 13/09/2012 11:35

Go grey not go grow Confused

Oh and dying your hair is NOT vacuous ffs.

Empusa · 13/09/2012 11:36

"Oh and dying your hair is NOT vacuous ffs"

I don't think anyone has said it is.

AFAIK all anyone has saisd is that judging people for choosing to go grey is vacuous

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/09/2012 11:37

Blimey OP I'm all confused now. I'm 37 with long dark brown hair with a bit of grey. I also have a young face and occasionally get asked for ID buying wine. Shall I dye my hair to make you happy? Or am I risking not getting served ever again?

I don't dye my hair. Not because I'm lazy, don't care about my appearance, depressed or making a feminist statement. I don't dye it because I don't mind it. Simple.

Ephiny · 13/09/2012 11:37

It's not vacuous. It's just a thing some people like to do, and some people prefer not to or never think of.

Like all kinds of things really.

greenhill · 13/09/2012 11:38

Wow. Lookist, sexist and ageist in one post...and the follow up comments from the OP.

It must be AIBU.

more · 13/09/2012 11:38

Yes YABU, but you probably know this by now Smile .
As I tell my children, it doesn't matter what you look like, whether you have freckles, red hair, be short, be tall, be stick thin, be slightly podgy, have ants in your pants, sit in a wheelchair, have crutches, have curly hair, straight hair, long hair, short hair, no hair, etc. it matters how you behave.

superwhizzynewlaptop · 13/09/2012 11:40

Thanks Empusa that is very nice of you. Chemo can do all sorts of horrors to hair, it's growing back now but I have gone from long coppery to short silvery in one year. I am doing OK thanks, in remission.

Some people like this OP are so judgey, seriously what does it matter what other people look like?

And I can honestly say that in the scheme of things my grey dull old lady hair really doesn't bother me that much. I would rather be grey than put crap on my hair.

And I'm not particularly attractive either (just read OPs other delightful posts on this thread) Grin

MadBusLady · 13/09/2012 11:40

Grin at "chavvy badgers".

cheesesarnie · 13/09/2012 11:40

I dye mine but that's because I like to.

Last year my hair fell out and I couldn't dye my hair. Hair loss was upsetting enough without idiots like you op.

How old are you op? because it's a very immature way to look at others.

Beanbagz · 13/09/2012 11:41

You are so wrong!

In any case my hair is not going grey - some of them are merely turning white (which perfectly complement my black hairs).

Why should i be conned into spending thousands of pounds on covering up the real me?

Surely people who dye their hair are just lacking in the confidence to be themselves?

Empusa · 13/09/2012 11:41

I'm really glad to hear that super!

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 13/09/2012 11:42
