Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

I'm 52. My DP says I have the "Mallen streak". It's down both sides. I couldn't give a flying fuck really. My hair is shiny, cut well and suits me. I'm going grey in "the basement" too. Hilarious.

These women all look beautiful with grey hair.
I think it is just personal choice. I now though that having it covered can mean going to the hairdresser every two weeks. Though you can do it yourself it can end up looking terrible, so one problem is how expensive it can be. Highlights, which don't have to be done so much, are at least 100 a time too.

Only noticed this was another bloody zombie thread when I spotted squeakytoy on page 3. What is with all the zombies lately Hmm

Gingersstuff · 14/05/2017 19:47

I'm 47 and used to have beautiful naturally red hair...but when I had my DC I lost most of the pigment so have been battling the silver with hair dye for the last 17 years or so. I'm at the point where I'm comfortable enough in myself and genuinely don't give a shit what people think, plus have become much more environmentally conscious, so have given up the dye. It's at that unfortunate stage where it's about a quarter grey/silver/white with a few strands of red, and three quarters still dye. But there's some fascinating colours coming through (I have a Mallan streak, who knew??!) so I'm persevering. My hair is long and wavy so I don't want, or suit it, short. Any better suggestions for this weird transition phase?

ElinoristhenewEnid · 14/05/2017 19:51

I dislike dyed hair it invariably looks false. I am late 50s and still have my original natural hair colour with few flecks of grey. I will let it change colour naturally. Don't wear make up either!

I don't care what colour other people's hair is. What I do care about is the fetishization of youth. Age is a good thing. Age means experience, life, wisdom. Wrinkles mean laughter and sorrow. I'd much rather live in a society which celebrates age than one which fears it and hides it away and pretends to be young.

Hair colour is a simple anti ageing tool. It's easy to do, cheap, non invasive and doesn't require surgery.

Why do some women want to be grey? I don't get it.

Changing your hair colour doesn't change your age. Nothing changes your age.

Why do some women want to pretend to be younger than they are? I don't get it.

Ginger

I don't think short hair looks good when it's grey. I know that some women have to (simply because the quality of their hair isn't good enough) but long-ish (well groomed) grey hair can look really beautiful.

I like the contrast between grey hair and grey skin (which does sometimes happen when somebody goes grey...)

Mermaidinthesea123 · 14/05/2017 19:59

My hair looks god awful with grey stripes in, it gets clairol slapped on it every 4 weeks without fail but it's up to the individual what they do with their hair.

Giraffey1 · 14/05/2017 20:00

What is a zombie thread? Is this different from a troll thread? Pardon my ignorance!

QuietNameChange · 14/05/2017 20:02

Giraffey

yes, it's different from a troll thread.

A Zombie thread is basically just an old thread that's been dead for a while (nobody wrote any comments) but has been resurrected (by a new comment).

Gah81 · 14/05/2017 20:02

There is very little more ageing than dry, brittle, over-dyed hair that is all one shade and dull.

Going grey naturally (what my mother and sisters have done and what I intend to do) looks far more chic.

hazeyjane · 14/05/2017 20:04

Haha, I have very short grey hair. I'd say shoot me now, but its OK, I'm a zombie and will just bite your arm off.

phoenix1973 · 14/05/2017 20:05

It's not the colour that's the issue. It's the texture. Frizzy, like wire wool and it just doesn't sit still or lie flat. From someone who has always had silky, flat, fine hair.

Gingersstuff · 14/05/2017 20:06

Quiet I feel the same, short grey hair can look amazing on a few people but generally, not a good look. I've known my MIL since she was late forties, she's always had short grey hair and in my opinion, it aged her terribly. I would want to keep my hair long and naturally wavy but I'm struggling a bit sometimes with the very obvious two-tone look I having going on at the minute Grin
Toying with the idea of going to the salon to take out the red altogether and get the rest of it coloured silver/grey maybe in an ombré type fashion.

midsomermurderess · 14/05/2017 20:10

I have many other things I want to do than to spend ages and lots of money sitting at the hair dressers every six weeks. I am not grey but have quite a bit of grey in my hair. If it doesn't bother me, why does it bother you?

EleanorRigbysNeice · 14/05/2017 20:11

I.Love.Grey.Hair. I hope I go a lovely steel grey...looks amazing 😉

Janeinthemiddle · 14/05/2017 20:17

Because they like the way they look? Because you have different taste than them? Because they have different priorities? Because their grey hair reminds them of their experiences?

alteredimages · 14/05/2017 20:21

FFS. How bloody depressing.

P1nkP0ppy · 14/05/2017 20:22

DFOD
I'm very happy with my silver grey hair, it's beautiful and infinitely better than some of the hideously badly dyed hair I see in town.
Thank goodness some of us are individuals who quite frankly couldn't care less what you think op.
And by the way 70 isn't 'old'!
Talk about being ageist and sexist, man don't have to put up with being judged by the colour of their hair 😡

Silvercatowner · 14/05/2017 20:23

Fuck off OP. Grey hair is gorgeous.

maggiso · 14/05/2017 20:27

I am getting a few grey hairs. My hair is very fine and thin and has never been my crowning glory- never will be. It will not take colour (or perms) without damage (believe me I have tried!). So I am living with it. Its that or a hat/wig! I am sure I am not the only one. Also Its costly to colour it - especially if your hair type needs salon expertise.

ExConstance · 14/05/2017 20:28

I agree with you entirely OP, my mother didn't go grey til she was 90, now her hair is a very fetching bright white, but I Will emulate her until I reach that age.DH and I go to classical music concerts quite often. they seem to attract women who are 40 plus, grey, flat shoes, tweedy coat etc. I really can't believe anyone would really want to look like someone over thirty years older.
it is a contentious subject on here as the frump brigade are a force to be reckoned with on mumsnet. think Honor Blackman forget Theresa May, Honor is very nearly as old as my mother and looks great, Theresa has hair like an elderly lady vicar.

user1490142285 · 14/05/2017 20:32

Ex-hairdresser here. I don't 'want to' be grey, I also don't want to look like a haggard corpse with dyed-too-dark hair. Getting the colour right is not easy for all of us and it can turn on a sixpence depending on season and how you're aging. My very dark hair (I used to touch up the greys around my ears to match the rest of my hair) suddenly (overnight) looked too dark one day last winter. It made me look rough. I will look rubbish with lighter or warmer tones. So I choose to be grey for now because it is the better option out of many.
Many people with dyed hair get it wrong and it is a lot of work.
