Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

I thought the journo was pretty incoherent, and really wasn't putting her point across articulately. In truth, I wasn't really sure she knew what her point was at one point! It wasn't a particularly good piece in any way.

The journo complaining that women have to try to look young (despite how silly you look with helmet hair when you're wrinkly) gave the impression that she didn't understand that by dying her hair she was buying into that, and that she could work against it better by leaving her hair in its natural state. She's a successful journo, so why not make a stand? On the other hand why should she if she doesn't want to? In which case don't complain about it.

The silver haired woman, though, had also bought into it, hadn't she? So in the end the piece was really a bit pointless.

TheDoctrine You should put them both in MY hair, in a crown, so I can feel like the queen of the world, with my white, white hairs.

Anyone got any jasmine? When I lived in India I loved plaiting jasmine in my hair and smelling gorgeous for ages afterwards.

I started going grey in my early 30's and a few years ago i decided to let my hair grow out grey. i work out at the gym i have a physical job and i am proud of my grey hair. and i do not look old. i am almost 57 and i am very pleased with the shape i am in. and since i stopped dying it, my hair is so soft and i love it.

CJ2010, some dyes are too cheap and will mess up your scalp. If you choose to dye your hair, that's your business and you mind it. If others of us choose to leave it grey, as long as we can live with it that's all that matters. That's the problem with our society now, we are to caught up with what people look like on the outside and are poor judges of the content of people's character on the inside. You might go grey worrying about what someone else is doing.

My mum became allergic to the dye and actually looked younger in her 40s grey than she did in her late 30s. Yabu to judge others and imply your way is superior.

NRFT but more and more women are becoming dangerously allergic to PPD, TDS and PDT. The only truly effective way to cover resistant grey is to use permanent colour which contains these ingredients. Ingredients which have killed women before. Maybe they don't think playing Russian Roulette with their lives is worth it.

Aren't all the youngsters after silver/grey hair right now? Which is actually very difficult to achieve.

Zombies probably have real problems with resistant greys Grin.

brasty · 14/05/2017 18:05

As you get older, your complexion changes. I used to dye my grey hair a very light brown. When I stopped and just went grey, lots of people have told me it looks better. Yes I look older, but the colour matches my complexion now.

JanetBrown2015 · 14/05/2017 18:05

Vanity is a sin and caring too much about your looks never makes people happy.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/05/2017 18:06

This one does!

Ethylred · 14/05/2017 18:08

I choose to be grey in the same way that I choose to be fabulously thin rich and beautiful. The rest of you have to suck it up.

squoosh · 14/05/2017 18:08

Vanity is a sin

I've always been partial to some light sinning.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 14/05/2017 18:09

@CJ2010 Your post says about your anxiety about ageing than whether or not you feel women should dye their hair or not imo. What is your opinion on men who don't dye their grey hair?

RaspberryOverloadsOnChilli · 14/05/2017 18:11

I'm growing the colour out. I'm 48 but started to go grey at 20. I'm fed up with colouring it only for roots to show a week or so later, and the hair on top is very white.

So I'll have a good cut with the grey and plan to have a laugh and colour the undersides bright blue once the brown has gone.

As for ageing, a good cut and reasonable makeup usually sorts out any washed out looks.

It's funny how it's only women who seem to look old when they have grey hair, must be all those double standards blinding people.

JaneEyre70 · 14/05/2017 18:13

I'm 46 and have been grey since about 28. I have mine dyed at the hairdressers every 6 weeks at the cost of around £80 a time as home dye lasts around a week on my hair. Within 4 weeks it really needs doing again, and I'm also starting to get very sore skin in patches on my scalp so realistically I know that my years of dark brown hair are nearly over. It makes me feel very old and depressed, and it's not even a nice grey it is white and wirey to boot. Not so glad I saw this thread Sad.

JaneEyre70 · 14/05/2017 18:16

Oh and it's a fecking zombie thread too....my joy is complete Biscuit

sunshineintheclouds · 14/05/2017 18:18

I can't dye my hair due to health reasons Sad it makes me sad enough without thinking others think this kind of thing

WrinkledlikeAudrey · 14/05/2017 18:18

I used to get hair coloured and had highlights added to my dark hair to try and cover regrowth. (Gave up home dying when I dyed the roller blind too...). Oh the relief to purse and self when I stopped! I had it cut short and let it grow as it would. Now dark at back with wings of silver - and I'm very comfortable with it. Not sure if they're just being nice but get compliments and I get some more dosh to spend.
